It’s either at least 2, possibly 3 and one a Masters probably from Oxbridge, or left school with one GCSE in home economics......

I've got 1.

My sister has degree, masters, PhD and various professional qualifications ... always was the clever one Smile

In RL I don't know how many degrees most people have aside from close family and a couple of friends. It doesn't matter unless your looking for a job does it?

I agree that I don't know for anyone I've only known for the time since all being past uni age. I could probably guess for a few of my 'mum' friends from their jobs, but we've never actually discussed it.

I know for all my colleagues though (I'm an academic so it's pretty obvious), all my school friends and (obviously) all my university friends, so I do know for most people I know and that doesn't seem that weird.

I have 9 driving tests...

To answer the OP's question, the reason why I have a BA and an MA is because I slightly changed tack and needed to learn more about my field. Then I expanded my work so I took a post-grad diploma and a post-grad certificate.
In reality the field I am in requires a lot of knowledge on the job as well. And I discover new things every week.
However the downside of my job is a lot of admin and using a rubbish software, and frustration.

tinytemper66 · 06/04/2019 10:54

I have one and a PGCE. Not remotely interested in further qualifications.

In 2016/2017 there were about 750,000 degrees awarded in the UK.

This Parliament Research Briefing gives info on number of degrees awarded over 1919. Including this graph. It's amazing how many more degrees are awarded nowadays. It be interesting to see the historical breakdown of the degree categorisation.

noblegiraffe · 06/04/2019 11:03

My one degree is a masters. Which is a bit weird.

shiveringtimber · 06/04/2019 11:05

I have almost two and am hoping I can afford an MfA.

tomhazard · 06/04/2019 11:15

I've got 1! And a pgce. No masters no phd. 10 GCSEs and 4 A-levels.

BertrandRussell · 06/04/2019 11:19

“My one degree is a masters. Which is a bit weird“
Me too. But it took me 4 years work, not like the 3 years plus another year undetected crime, like the Oxbridge types!

I got a Desmond. BA (Hons) in English and Education Studies.
Never used it. I pack fish with many people who didn't even finish school. Some even struggle to write and read.
I'm thankful for the experience, I grew up a lot in the four years I was doing it. And it taught me to be able to manage in polite situations.
I also have a Brownie hostess badgeGrin

BarbaraofSevillle · 06/04/2019 11:23

I 'only' have one, but I do have 4 different, but related, professional qualifications.

A question about when people say 'I have 3 degrees' do they mean three different undergraduate degrees in different subjects taken at different times, or is it a Bachelors degree, a Masters and a something else that I haven't heard of?

I can't imagine doing one degree and then deciding that going on to do another one is a good idea....

iklboo · 06/04/2019 11:24

I don't have any but I do have a Tufty badge which I think is far more impressive. Grin

Jenniferyellowcat · 06/04/2019 11:29

Row I got the hostess badge too! Did you serve biscuits on a doily?

redeyetonowheregood · 06/04/2019 11:30

I have BSc, MSc, PhD, currently studying for MA. I had a huge amount of debt which stopped me getting on property ladder until 35. I am an academic and earn less than friends who have no degrees or only 1, so financially it hasn't paid off at all. I had a fully funded PhD fellowship though which was lucky.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/04/2019 11:35

Wow, that graph... I did my degrees 1979-1985, in the days of grants - normal undergrad then research council Quota. Those were the days when a minority did A levels, then (I think) a minority of those did a degree. I'd be curious to see the graphs divided by sex, my perception was that back then significantly fewer girls than boys did degrees but I could be wrong.

ClaraMatilda · 06/04/2019 11:36

I have 2 and am working towards another - BA, MA, MPhil in progress.

When I first joined MN (a long time and multiple namechanges ago) I only had GCSEs. I started university in my late 20s. I do think it's very much about social circles - where I am now, in an academic environment, my qualifications seem fairly ordinary. Where I was before, not many people I knew well had degrees, and I didn't know anyone with a Masters. MN demographics seem to be skewed towards the better-educated.

DMCWelshcakes · 06/04/2019 11:53

I've got one & a couple of postgraduate certificates/career related qualifications. I also have Grade 6 violin.

This makes me by far the stupidest person in my family of origin. Grin I give not one single shiny shite.

If money were no object and I wasn't working, I'd quite like to do another degree in social history or something like that, just for the hell of it.

Starryskiesinthesky · 06/04/2019 11:56

I've only got 2! BSc Hons and MPhil. Crap school results tho!

elQuintoConyo · 06/04/2019 12:03

We're all thick as minge in the Conyo house.

Although I do have my Brownie Hostess badge, cycling proficiency and 2 green ribbons for coming 3rd in the 50m sprint at primary school. I still have them.

elQuintoConyo · 06/04/2019 12:03

MINCE thick as mince Blush

Starryskiesinthesky · 06/04/2019 12:08

Haha thick as minge Grin

GregoryPeckingDuck · 06/04/2019 12:10

Maybe they just don’t mention it because one degree is stock standard.

Ffsnosexallowed · 06/04/2019 12:12

I've got 2, Llb and MSc. Neither from oxbridge.
