Weight gain on Depo

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 05/04/2019 13:28

Has anyone had significant weight gain while on the Depo injection?

I knew I'd gained weighed so got weighed today and since being put on the injection a year ago I've gained 2 stone!!

I'm coming off it now and starting a weight loss regime but just wondered if anyone else had had weight gain with it?

Yes. It is a known side effect too. I also bled with it so only had 2 injections

Fluffycloudland77 · 05/04/2019 15:39

I gained about 7lbs on the implant, it dropped off when I had it removed.

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 05/04/2019 15:59

I'd read it could be a side effect but I got quite a shock! Coming off it straight away now.

Every time I went for the injection they recorded my weight as well so I'm surprised the weight gain wasn't mentioned as possibly being caused by the injection.

They didn't tell me when i went on it that you can't be on it long term as it can strip your bones. So after 18 months they were getting twitchy and wanted me to have a bone scan (i couldn't afford it so I'm not on it anymore).

PotteringAlong · 05/04/2019 16:13

I’ve been on it for the last 12 years (with a break for conceiving/ pregnancy for 3 children) and have put some weight on but I suspect that’s a side effect of 28 and child free vs 40 and 3 kids.

No one has suggested I can’t be on it long termZ

dementedpixie · 05/04/2019 17:45

It can thin your bones so it's not advised to be on it for more than 2 years at a time. If you are then you should get bone scans to check their density

SlightAggrandising · 05/04/2019 17:47

I've been on it for about 4 years and have put weight on that seems to be resistant to my usual dieting tactics!! I decided to stop it so didn't have my February jab. Boobs are really sore now!! hopefully I can start chipping away at this extra padding.

PotteringAlong · 05/04/2019 17:48

Ooh, then I’ll ask. I was on it for 4 years, off for 10 months (ds1) on it for 8 months, off for 2.5 years (DS2), on for 8 months, off for 13 months (ds3) and I’ve now been back on it for just over 2 years. Hmmmm Hmm

Whoknows11 · 05/04/2019 17:54

Yes I've put a stone on in 6 months. Decided I'm not going to continue as feel horrid that none of my clothes fit!!
Hoping the weight will slowly start to come off!

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 05/04/2019 19:50

I never knew about the bone thinning. Rather cross that the GP never informed me of that.

I'm hoping I can shift the weight easy once I stop it. Also I think it's taken my sex drive too, hoping that will come back, as is DH!

SlightAggrandising · 05/04/2019 21:35

OP, it's clear from the variety of experiences here that "bone thinning"
Is a moveable feast.
I'd be surprised if the GP hadn't asked you about a family history of osteoporosis and if you're active and not clearly underweight then your risk is likely to be low. Dot take MNers anecdata to be meaningful in your own specific case.

eclipse1808 · 05/04/2019 21:44

Yes! I’m so upset, 2.5 stone in a year. Coming off & to the gym soon so hoping it goes back to hell

bliminy · 05/04/2019 22:09

I've been on it for 14 years. I've had periodic bone scans that have shown no changes. I didn't gain any weight when I went on it but my weight has gone up and down over time depending on how much I eat.

Pearl97 · 05/04/2019 22:16

I posted about this the other day. I’ve put in a Stone after 3 injections. I now eat a lot less but still weigh a stone more. If I eat a lot one weekend the weight just piles on. I’m not having my next injection. It’s awful. If I ate like this before I started the injection I would be a stone lighter. I’m so annoyed I ever started it! Let’s keep each other updated if the weight falls off when we stop. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone!

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 06/04/2019 06:35

Yes good idea @Pearl97 I'm upset I started it too, so much work to do now to get the weight off.

OP posts:
Mumto3cherubs · 06/04/2019 06:44

I’ve been on it 6 months now since having baby and literally didn’t drop any weight! I’m now slowly starting to lose the weight but very slowly! It is known for people putting on weight but I’ve put myself in a pretty strict diet! I’m always starving though!

BayandBlonde · 06/04/2019 06:50

I've been on it for 22 years without a break and my bones are fine. They have done bone scans.

I'm not sure about weight gain, yes I've put on about two stone but that's over a 22 year period so it's not relevant.

Also my periods stopped completely, hence why I'm a fan and been on it so long

Pearl97 · 07/04/2019 09:57

I haven’t had a period for 36 weeks either. But I can’t get in my clothes and when I see people I haven’t seen for a while I can see them thinking wow ... you’ve put on weight!!!! So I’m definitley not having it again. I can’t decide what to do though, I may just take a break from everything!

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 07/04/2019 13:25

That's what I'm doing @Pearl97 not going on any hormone altering contraception now, back to condoms for us!

OP posts:
Pearl97 · 15/04/2019 20:19

I’ve just been reading about all of the horror stories on google. Ha anyone experienced issues when they stopped taking it? It says we will experience a surge in hormones.
Have you stopped it now @WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream

SlightAggrandising · 15/04/2019 20:27

My last one was due in Feb and I didn't have it. Really sore boobs. Other than that, nothing of note. Apparently that's due to high oestrogen. Idk. Hope it fucks off soon.

Pearl97 · 15/04/2019 20:57

@SlightAggrandising did you gain weight on it. My boobs had been sore throughout, awful isn’t it. Really hope things settle down for you soon x

MatchsticksForMyEyesReturns · 15/04/2019 21:00

I put 2 stone on too. After stopping it all came off really quickly. I am eating the same amount but have maintained this weight ever since. I would never recommend it to anyone.

Pearl97 · 15/04/2019 21:04

I really believe it’s poison. It’s been such an awful decision. I could tell when the nurse told me I might put on weight she knew most did. I’m so glad we have hope this weight will come off. Thank you @MatchsticksForMyEyesReturns you’ve given us hope! X

SlightAggrandising · 15/04/2019 21:14

about 2 stone. Hoping it doesn't hang around for too long!
