Have you/would you do dishwasher salmon?

Cooking salmon in a dishwasher. I have Googled and I imagine it is a good way to steam it.

Have not/would not.

Sounds very fishy to me.

mclaleli · 02/04/2019 00:38

I don't really get the point in it.

INeedNewShoes · 02/04/2019 00:45

Are you sure this isn't an April Fool?

It is a real thing, Shoes, have a look on YouTube or Google salmon in dishwasher recipes.

And, no, I've never done it!

mclaleli · 02/04/2019 04:33

An April fool the day after fools day?

Halo84 · 02/04/2019 04:38

I’ve never done it and wouldn’t. I bake salmon but would poach it before putting it in the dishwasher.

SimonitesSocks · 02/04/2019 04:52

But that's a bit pointless, Halo, it's being cooked in the dishwasher that poaches the salmon in the first place

Halo84 · 02/04/2019 05:37

I know. I just cannot prepare food in a dishwasher. To me, it’s gross.

ShatnersWigIsActuallyAMammoth · 02/04/2019 08:07

The late, great Vincent Price was only really known in this country for horror films but in America he was also known for being exceptionally knowledgeable about art and a noted chef. One of his most famous things was, indeed, recommending poaching fish in a dishwasher. I believe he demonstrated it on TV with trout rather than salmon but that it applied to all fish.

Bluntness100 · 02/04/2019 08:10

I wouldn't do this and can't see the point if I'm honest. You can cook it perfectly well in the oven, just wrap it in tinfoil.

TimeforDuggee · 02/04/2019 08:11

I have done it. My uncle who was a chef taught me in the 80s when I was a kid so I didn't think it was anything particularly unusual until I was an adult. It poached perfectly and was amazing. I'm not sure how else I could poach a full salmon? It was pretty big and wrapped up very well.

ShirleyPhallus · 02/04/2019 08:11

I wouldn’t eat dishwasher salmon after learning on here that some people put welly boots and toilet brushes through the dishwasher 😷

TeddyIsaHe · 02/04/2019 08:13

It would be overcooked and grim surely?

Just poach a whole salmon in the oven en papillote. Much easier/tastier/better able to control cooking time and temp.

Drogosnextwife · 02/04/2019 08:14

No it's daft, you can poach salmon without putting it in the dishwasher.

SnuggyBuggy · 02/04/2019 08:15

I'm tempted to try this purely out of morbid curiosity

SimonitesSocks · 02/04/2019 08:18

I think the whole point is that you're killing two birds with one stone - doing an ordinary dishwash plus putting your salmon in to poach at the same time!

Just as if you're doing a dishwasher vodka Grin

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 02/04/2019 08:19

When my brother entertained a lot without much in the way of cooking utensils he used to frequently cook large whole salmon in the dishwasher. He swears by it. I've never tried it, largely because I can't afford whole salmon.

TheQueef · 02/04/2019 08:22

I hate salmon.
Can you do it with finny?

TimeforDuggee · 02/04/2019 08:23

I didn't put any dishes in with mine! Although I like the strive for efficiency Grin

WhatNowRandy · 02/04/2019 08:32

My issue would be less with the salmon not getting cooked and more with my dishwasher (let alone any dishes in it at the same time) becoming fishy. Baked on hard fishy.

OneOrgasmicBirthPlease · 02/04/2019 13:46

I pride myself on eating everything, but that idea is disgusting. Why spoil an amazing fish by poaching it in dishwasher soap?

jackparlabane · 02/04/2019 13:51

You don't put soap in. It's only worth it for a whole salmon that doesn't fit in your oven let alone in dishes you could use for poaching.

Wrap in foil very thoroughly, with any herbs you want, put in top rack, run delicate cycle.

OneOrgasmicBirthPlease · 02/04/2019 13:55

What is wrong with cutting the fillet in half if it does not fit in the oven? It's not a giant turkey.

Call me closed-minded, but I don't get it.

My dishwasher smells really strongly of dishwasher detergent even after I run an empty cycle with no tablet. So do all my dishes.

Raera · 02/04/2019 14:42

I've done a whole one in a stainless steel sink, thanks to the power of google, great idea I thought as too big to go in a salmon kettle.
Cover with boiling water, put chopping board over to keep heat in.
Pull plug out when cooked. All was going well until I tried to get it out - all broke up into pieces

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 02/04/2019 17:33

It's only for large whole salmon that you want to serve whole. You run the dishwasher empty once, and then again with the salmon well wrapped in foil.
