Things MN have taught me that I do that annoy people

There are lots of things I do that I had no idea were unreasonable until MN. So a selection are:

  • saying things - oh you have got your hands full, when a woman has 3 or more young kids she is trying to herd along,
  • sneezing loudly,
  • saying - My bad,
  • having a toilet brush by the toilet,
  • asking people with kids if they are planning to have any more,
  • asking people if they work, and if yes what do they do,
  • saying things like - oh someone isn't happy - at a screaming baby,
  • talking to people in bus queues,

I think I should stop now! I should probably just stay in the house and not talk to anyone from now on!!

I must say that the only people I know who use 'you look well' as a compliment are weight obsessives and they only ever say it to people who are bigger than them, never to people who are slimmer.

Another favourite is also 'have you lost weight?' when the person is clearly the same size, or maybe bigger, than they have always been. Its an underhand way of making people feel self conscious about their weight but pretending it's a compliment.

I've never heard anyone say either of those things to people they actually like.

I'm with you once again OP..

Anytime I've either heard or used 'you look well', it was meant as 'you look well' -oddly enough Confused,. It is only on here I've seen anyone link that to weight in anyway.

PasturesGreen - many of the things younlist aren't in anyway rude in my world, once again. I don't know which part of our upbringings all these things come from, (age? class? geography? cultural background?) but what one person considers rude, another considers friendly. What one considers normal, another thinks is stand offish or unfriendly or even cold. If you stick around these boards long enough you'll see oft repeated threads where one side can't get their heads round the fact othrnpeople are different.

if i tell someone they look well it's because you know, they look well.
it could be that the last time i saw them they had a bad night with the baby and this time they had had a good nights sleep and looked refreshed or they are in a happy place and giving off a happy vibe.
it is nothing to do with their weight
i'm wondering now how many ppl i've offened without realising it

redzebra10 · 01/04/2019 18:53

oh shit i just realised it sounds like i'm answearing myself
i'll get me coat

BlueSkiesLies · 01/04/2019 20:14

I take people to mean something if they say it.
Like “oh you should come over sometime”
Great, let’s set a date!
Or “let me know if you need a hand”
Yeah that would be fab actually!

BlueSkiesLies · 01/04/2019 20:15

@redzebra10 nothing wrong with saying someone looks well! Better than my aunts standard greeting to me “ooooh you look so tired!” No I’m actually fine and well rested!
