Things you find oddly comforting

Thought this would be an interesting thread. Things you find comforting but you don't know why. For me it's thinking about the 90s and looking back on all the fads, music, fashion of that era (pokemon, Spice Girls etc). Makes me feel really calm and happy. This can also go the opposite way and depending on my mood, it can also make me feel a sad longing for the past! So weird and I have no idea why I have such strong emotions linked to this particular decade! I also find the sound of the tumble dryer soothing and have been know to watch the laundry spinning round in the washer Blush

Call the midwife, pure escapism from the harshness of real life. I'm aware that sounds a bit odd considering some of the storylines but it just makes me feel cosy and safe.

The Call the Midwife music is so comforting, and indulging in a simpler time (though obviously not all was better.)
Some pp upthread mentioned putting a warm cup (once they have finished a cup of tea/coffee) on their ear - tried it yesterday, and it was lovely!
My dd's love the way their grandmother smells (mixture of her washing powder and perfume)- I always get a "oohhh lovely, grandma has been in the car hasn't she!"

What a great thread, really enjoying it.

Mine is the sound of men's shoes walking in an underground carpark.

That was me. I'm SO pleased you tried it & enjoyed it! SmileBrew

I want to make 2 cups of tea now and use both Grin

My dh's is the kettle. Any time he was stressed or thinking about something serious he would wander over to the kettle, flick the switch and stand listening to it bubble away then wander off again when it was finished. No tea/coffee making. He was so off in his own little world he had no idea he was doing it and I couldn't figure out why the kettle was always warm til I watched him go back and forth to the kettle when he was studying for some exams. He thinks the white noise must be soothing 😂

flamed I agree with you about people’s houses. Fascinating about catching a snapshot of people’s lives and definitely comforting.

Swimming pool waterslides. I've been known to take myself to a pool which has them, and go down them again and again, like a child having lots of goes on a playground slide. I like the dark and scary ones!

Also my daughter applying my make up (taken off shortly after)
Makes me fall asleep!

There's a squirrel who I often see on my front garden, well o presume it's the same one.... I love having a but of nature around me, even though we love close to a large dual carriageway

A really heavy blanket on me in bed, the weight of it reminds me of being a child and makes me fall asleep almost instantly. I've looked into weighted blankets purely for this reason

Yes to call the midwife
Buffy is my main comfort TV
The sound of water, especially if it's like a bubbling brook or river
Water in general soothes me, I love the beach and the smell of the sea

twosoups1972 · 28/03/2019 22:54

omzlas I came home from university once and was really cold in bed as it still had a summer weight duvet on. Instead of changing it, my mum put a heavier one on top, I was soooooo warm and cosy Smile

When I'm very stressed I do embroidery. I am a terrible fidget and when stressed out it becomes a little frantic (nail chewing, hair twirling, knuckle cracking, lip chewing etc etc) so the embroidery gives me something to focus on and keeps my ahnds busy. That's my sort of "practical" way to divert from stress.

On a more nightly basis, my go-to comfort is fairy lights. I'm a woman possessed Grin Main lights off, fairy lights on. No telly, no phone. I will happily just lie in the almost-dark, whether its my bedroom or on the sofa, and think about everything & nothing.
