Things you find oddly comforting

Thought this would be an interesting thread. Things you find comforting but you don't know why. For me it's thinking about the 90s and looking back on all the fads, music, fashion of that era (pokemon, Spice Girls etc). Makes me feel really calm and happy. This can also go the opposite way and depending on my mood, it can also make me feel a sad longing for the past! So weird and I have no idea why I have such strong emotions linked to this particular decade! I also find the sound of the tumble dryer soothing and have been know to watch the laundry spinning round in the washer Blush

Gave me goosebumps jane!

A hug from any member of my immediate family - particularly my DH. I was a real worrier (still am occasionally) and that feeling of safety when we hug and all my fears melt away is one of the reasons I knew he was marriage material. Also one of my cats purring - just makes me feel so content!

Itslookinglikeabeautifulday · 24/03/2019 01:39

Hmm, just reread OP and realised a hug/cats purring is not really oddly comforting. Sorry, tired but can’t sleep....

Dogdogcat · 24/03/2019 01:46

A cup of tea.

Hopingforpixiedust · 24/03/2019 02:00

What is a shipping forecast?

fearofthesmear · 24/03/2019 06:16

Hoping it’s a weather forecast on radio 4 at 00:50ish - details sea conditions right round UK waters as far as Iceland and Portugal . It’s usually read in a monotonous RP voice and consists of just numbers and names of areas of ocean . They do lovely music before so as to make it easier to find if you’re tuning in . And then play the national anthem after . All very British and lovely .

coragreta · 24/03/2019 06:55

Being a passenger in the car. I love being driven around I find it comforting.

FiveLittlePigs · 24/03/2019 07:13

Listening to Monty Don just pottering and talking about what he's doing in the garden. He has a very calming voice.

Frouby · 24/03/2019 07:21

I like watching my Yorkshire puddings rise in the oven. It makes me feel happy and relaxed and calm. It's usually a sunday, most of the dinner is done and just waiting for the puds to finish so I can dish up.

I also like listening to weather, so rain or wind or thunder, when I am in bed and safe and secure and the dcs are tucked up and dh is sleeping.

And listening to my chickens making happy little clucks. We have an allotment and I sit in my chair at my little table and listen to them chattering away happily and it just makes things OK. Same with the ponies, my big pony likes a cuddle. She leans her head over your shoulder and wraps herself around you and whiffles you with her nose. Shes so big and heavy and comforting and gentle.

brizzlemint · 24/03/2019 07:35

Yy to the shipping forecast as it's one of my few comforts from my childhood. I pluck my eyebrows when stressed.

HoHoHolyCow · 24/03/2019 07:36

Sniffing DC2's dirty socks Blush The smell of fabric softener and slightly grubby feet is so comforting.

redexpat · 24/03/2019 07:38

Church bells.
Brummy accents.

HeronLanyon · 24/03/2019 07:38

Rain (when I’m inside)
Watching birds - just haphazardly - I am not a twitcher. Find them fascinating and quite magical really.
Opening a cupboard where I have things kept from sorting my dad’s house after he died - smells of his house. Brings back good memories and love.
Seeing fox or badger or owl etc - knowing nature is hanging on in there. Then worry, so it’s a bit fleeting tbh.

Zoflorabore · 24/03/2019 07:40

Love this thread!

I love listening to rain and storm music on YouTube whilst in bed.
Listening to Dauschy meditations on YouTube, the man has the most gorgeous voice!

Smelling my Downy fabric softener

Lighting a gorgeous melt.

LittleMachine · 24/03/2019 07:52

Seeing the same people on my drive to work. Oh hi Morgan Freeman. Hi Green Coat Man, I see you’re on your bike today. Morning Briefcase man, new tie 👍🏻
NB These conversations are in my head, as I see them from my car. They don’t know they’re a soothing part of my morning routine.

MadauntofA · 24/03/2019 07:56

Going to the optician- they have an electronic machine to change the lenses when checking eyesight, and the clicking in the dark really relaxes me!!!

NotAnotherJaffaCake · 24/03/2019 08:10

Morris dancing. Went to a village fete type thing yesterday and the sight of pensioners and middle aged people prancing about with bells and sticks is comforting in the face of Brexit and all that.

Cheesymonster · 24/03/2019 08:15

Threads like this comfort me!

I like the casefile podcast and will give the shipping forecast a go too now.

Looking out of the window even though there's not much going on!

Tidying my handbag, swapping to a new one.

Ironing! I watch YouTube or Netflix on my iPad at the same time so I find it really relaxing.

Closing the curtains in the evening, putting the lamps on. Maybe lighting a candle.

Squeegle · 24/03/2019 08:18

Having the dishwasher in and the kitchen tidy in the evening is comforting 🙂

Magmatic80 · 24/03/2019 08:20

The view from my sofa through the patio doors when I’ve just mown the lawn and there’s washing out. My potted plants added to the scene now spring has sprung just brings home how happy I am to finally own my own garden. It makes me feel comforted that I have this space.

GreenOliveOrBlackOlive · 24/03/2019 08:28

Soft Scots accents.
Vanilla
My Dd used to brush my hair when she was little, talking to herself and putting in slides. Not anymore she’s 20 now ☹️
Ooh def yes to an eye test! It’s so weird being so close to someone else you don’t know and they're concentrating. I’m mesmerised.
A dark quiet room and Christmas tree lights.
My cats. Especially when they’re dozing with one eye open or stretched out somewhere warm.
Someone pinning clothes to be altered on me or measuring.

LeonoraFlorence · 24/03/2019 08:33

Definitely rain when you’re warm and cosy inside.
The Heartbeat theme tune. Reminds me of Sunday nights and feeling lovely after a family weekend as a child.

Mmmhmmokdear · 24/03/2019 08:34

Going on a long walk and looking at the scenery.

ShouldHaveListenedInBiology · 24/03/2019 08:37

What a lovely thread! I am with you with the 90s thing - I guess it was a simpler time!
