Things you find oddly comforting

Thought this would be an interesting thread. Things you find comforting but you don't know why. For me it's thinking about the 90s and looking back on all the fads, music, fashion of that era (pokemon, Spice Girls etc). Makes me feel really calm and happy. This can also go the opposite way and depending on my mood, it can also make me feel a sad longing for the past! So weird and I have no idea why I have such strong emotions linked to this particular decade! I also find the sound of the tumble dryer soothing and have been know to watch the laundry spinning round in the washer Blush

Watching/hearing my cats eat
The smell of my dog's feet Confused
Making "hmm" noises in the back of my throat when I'm nodding off to sleep
Waggling my eyebrows like a Mexican wave, (but probably disturbing to anyone that can see it).

sideorderofchips · 24/03/2019 11:38

@lucysmam they pop up if you search for kao steam eye masks on eBay. Amazon has them too but not as cheap

lucysmam · 24/03/2019 12:10

Thank-you! I'll have a look now :)

ILoveMaxiBondi · 24/03/2019 12:11

I love the sensation of plucking my eyebrows!

Yes!! I’m not the only one Grin

iklboo · 24/03/2019 12:16

Sleeping with a tissue crumpled in my hand. No idea why but I always sleep better if I'm holding a tissue.

IJustLostTheGame · 24/03/2019 12:16

Polishing silver and tidying dd's dollhouse.
The antiques road show
The smell of freshly cut grass
Clean sheets on the bed

Squirrel26 · 24/03/2019 12:27

Emmerdale and Coronation Street. Don’t watch them all the time, didn’t watch them growing up, don’t have more than a vague idea who anyone is or what’s happening, but I find it immensely comforting that they’re just always there, carrying on basically unchanged!

Cocolepew · 24/03/2019 12:28

I sometimes lie in bed and stick my arm straight up. Its really comforting for some reason . I can do it for ages too 😆

LittleKitty1985 · 24/03/2019 12:31

Pressing a warm mug to my ear (Sounds weird but it feels lovely - I encourage you to try it after you've finished drinking a hot drink)

Originofstars · 24/03/2019 13:15

Electric light reflected on a wet pavement. I'd love to unpick it, I'm convinced it relates to a happy childhood moment Smile

Kayleidogyn · 24/03/2019 13:26

Twirling my hair - apparently I did it as a little one too. It's always the left side of my head, so I consciously try to even it out or I end up with 2 different hairstyles.
Smelling my dogs' paws - one smells like popcorn, one like crisps.
Rubbing my beagles ears against my lips.

PrivateIsles · 24/03/2019 13:56

Photos of hot drinks with steam rising

Same here. I had my cup of tea in the garden this morning at about 7am and it was lovely - it was quite cold still, but the sun was up, the birds were singing, church bells in the distance - and steam rising from the tea! So peaceful and calming.

mimibunz · 24/03/2019 13:57

A nice long episode of Miss Marple
Books from my childhood

BlueMerchant · 24/03/2019 14:02

A Sunday night murder mystery- any old rubbish as long as it's a drama and it's a Sunday.
Certain smells- especially Avon pink Bubble Bath.

Azzizam · 24/03/2019 14:06

Being on a train when it's dark and just before people pull the curtains shut. I find it comforting imagining them getting dinner, their routines.
I used to love the sound of a coffee percolator but don't think people use them any more?
Watching Barber videos on YouTube.
Two small cuddly toys I hold in each hand when sleeping.

Azzizam · 24/03/2019 14:08

Chocolate and a mug of Earl Grey tea so not odd at all but very comforting.

HelloCanYouHearMe · 24/03/2019 14:25

Talking to one particular friend of mine. It doesnt matter what about - it could something thats bothering me or we could just chat bollocks, but he has a very calming tone to his voice and it always makes me feel calm, comforted and safe

ShimmeringIce · 24/03/2019 14:45

Opening big supermarket freezers, sometimes has a smell like eating ice pops in the summer.
Also the football results coming through (does that even still happen?) and the sound of wood pigeons.

Giggorata · 24/03/2019 14:50

Yes, yes, yes to the Shipping Forecast.
The snooker on TV
Hearing wood pigeons in the distance
Tea and crumpets

One thing I miss that I used to find comforting is the sound of those old fashioned heavy lawn mowers that were pulled backwards and forwards, together with the smell of freshly cut grass.

priya33 · 24/03/2019 14:55

A particular Excel sheet for work that marks my performance. I can simulate data on it for hours. I even did tody.

DinosApple · 24/03/2019 15:22

Yes to pigeons cooing, the sound of (distant!) lawn mowers on a summers evening, the archers theme tune, small aeroplanes flying. Also sitting in doors watching the light and shadows play on a sunny day.

They are all sounds and sights from my childhood.

3in4years · 24/03/2019 15:28

Hanging washing on the line.
Throwing some laundry into an empty basket.
Walking into am empty house.
Clean sheets.
Sleeping alone in a single bed.
Scratchy gorse on my legs on a cliff walk (and that amazing smell).
Silence and darkness.

3in4years · 24/03/2019 15:30

Also,
Train journeys
Wandering around town alone, especially the pound shops.

FireCrotch · 24/03/2019 17:31

Hearing my lovely neighbour going potty at her kids. Doesn't happen often but makes me feel better that I'm not the only one to give their kids a loud nuclear telling off.Grin
