Things you find oddly comforting

Thought this would be an interesting thread. Things you find comforting but you don't know why. For me it's thinking about the 90s and looking back on all the fads, music, fashion of that era (pokemon, Spice Girls etc). Makes me feel really calm and happy. This can also go the opposite way and depending on my mood, it can also make me feel a sad longing for the past! So weird and I have no idea why I have such strong emotions linked to this particular decade! I also find the sound of the tumble dryer soothing and have been know to watch the laundry spinning round in the washer Blush

@ILoveMaxiBondi I love the sensation of plucking my eyebrows! I also love squeezing spots!

wanderings · 24/03/2019 08:38

Putting trainers on my bare feet - I used to do it as a child because I liked the way it felt, especially tying or velcroing them tight.

When my DH wants to do anything secret on my behalf, such as order a present or surprise for me online, or wrap it up, he likes to do it in front of me. I find this very comforting indeed, listening to him clicking or wrapping away, knowing that's something for me, even though I can't see what he's doing, because I'm blindfolded. Smile

Midnight runs in the city!

I don't use bars of soap for washing but I buy highly fragrances ones to er fondle!

Like a stress ball, I roll the soap around in my hands and the smoothness of the soap and the fragrance is very comforting.

Tobacco Grin

I’m with those with a fondness for simpler times. I stick on Absolute 80s or watch adverts from 70s or 80s on YouTube Blush, I can do that for quite some time.
I have my late dad’s old Navy uniform cap which smells of his head, so I give that a sniff.

PajamasnoDramas · 24/03/2019 09:15

Oh, and tabacco! Sometimes gin too 😀

lucysmam · 24/03/2019 09:18

@YesQueen any chance of a link to the eye masks? They sound interesting!

Being tucked up in bed on a rainy night reading Mumsnet. Purring cat next to me, usually D cat likes to cuddle really closely. We have a wooded area behind our house and some nights you can hear the Owls hooting.

November and December afternoons when it's dark early, lighting the fire and watching Midsomer Murders, bliss. I always find you can nod off and you've not missed much, lovely houses, pretty villages. You can tell I'm semi retired lol.

Cocolepew · 24/03/2019 09:26

I do a complicated finger placement on my face so I can stroke my nose with my little finger.
Watching videos of things being power hosed, cakes being decorated and my new one is watching vids of trainers being cleaned and restored .

DDog curled up behind my knees when I'm lying in bed or on sofa

OldGrinch · 24/03/2019 09:29

@HeronLanyon it's making me feel a bit teary reading about your dad's house and the cupboards and smells . I know exactly what you mean.

StayingWithAuntySue · 24/03/2019 09:32

The Clangers. I started watching it with DS when he was poorly and very unsettled and it has now become part of his bedtime routine. We do milk and Clangers before going upstairs to bed. It’s so gentle and lovely. It’s more for me than it is him I think Blush

Hearing the music from "In the Night Garden". I used to dance around the living room with my children to this when they were tiny.

The sound of mopeds/scooters on an early summer evening. Reminds me of holidays abroad when I was young. Also nice to think of some youngster whizzing about in the sunshine.

Bringing in the washing when it's dried outside. Love the smell, the feeling that it's all done.

Noise of the washing machine, reminds me of feeling content as a child.

Deleting all my emails from the trash - satisfying!

HeronLanyon · 24/03/2019 10:01

oldgrinch yes! Hoping they are those tears which are also comforting. About to have similar cupboard for my old ma who died before Christmas. Not yet comforting tears but they will come once the really crap period abates a little. 😬
Owls from your bed - how absolutely wonderful.

Sorting and putting out the recycling.

FenellaMaxwell · 24/03/2019 10:23

Cooking spaghetti bolognese. It was the first thing my grandmother taught me to make, in the mid 80s, and I always feel like I’m back in her kitchen again. Cooking any familiar dish, for that matter.

Our bedtime routine My husband looks at me at night when were watching tv amd tells me to take my glasses off and get into my sleepy position and then makes sure im covered up he wont tell me what time it is because if he said something early like 830 ill convince myself im not tierd and be wide awake ill say to him im not tierd he tells me he can tell i am. Im always asleep minutes later. Hes not controlling before that gets said i feel so loved and protected.

SapphireSeptember · 24/03/2019 11:09

Lying in bed listening to the rain knowing I'm warm and dry (and not going out, if it's my day off.)

Listening to Evanescence's 'Fallen' album. I've had it since I was 15 (it was the first piece of music I owned) and I know all the songs off by heart. Listening it is like listening to lullabies.

Our Starbucks has closed now, but I used to love going in there, it felt so cosy and I love their hot chocolates (especially ones with pumpkin spice added, I didn't get one at all last year. Sad )

Cuddling my plushies and stroking their fur. I have neither children or pets and I'm single, so sometimes it's just nice to cuddle something.

Navratilover · 24/03/2019 11:12

Crumpets
Gilbert & Sullivan operas (I'll run through these in my head if I'm feeling anxious in the middle of the night)
The smell of talcum powder
Harry Potter books/films

Navratilover · 24/03/2019 11:14

Hadn't RTFT when I posted but God YES to the shipping forecast, especially the one just before midnight, followed by Sailing By, with a hot mug of Horlicks.

Historydweeb · 24/03/2019 11:14

Listening to people speak in Latin.
Kissing my dogs big wet nose

MrsMeow · 24/03/2019 11:23

Stroking the inside of my arm/elbow really lightly with one finger. I've done it for years and do it subconsciously when I'm stressed or tired.

Never even realised I did it until DH pointed it out one day!
