I'm Very connected to Easter because of the time of year.

The precious earth, world and the changes of seasons.

Even Jesus's re birth fits nicely with the general theme of hope, newness Etc

I find it really arrogant telling people what's wholesome or not!!

CherryPavlova · 25/03/2019 18:59

LateEaster.................it’s not a celebration of the re birth of Jesus Christ. Mixed up theology a little.

Lovely for schools and Brownies to teach about all faiths. Diwali as a celebration is nice. Chinese New Year very jolly. You surely wouldn’t be hand out gifts on the eve of Yom Kippur and arrive with chocolate cake nor create a lunchtime huge feast during Ramadan to show an understanding of Islam?

Celebrate spring, enjoy the newborn lambs, eat chocolate, do something special with your families but don’t pretend it’s Easter you are celebrating.....or at least hold off until the feast of Easter actually begins.

Perhaps Christians should show the same levels of sensitivity and discrimination and avoid all the non-Faith secular trappings that have become attached to their key festivals. Stick to the Bible teachings.
Always found the Stations of the Cross a bit gruesome though, along with the crown of thorns, whipping and the actual crucifixion.
Mel Gibson’s The Passion of The Christ as the go-to family film.
Then the happily ever after ending. And the leaving.Except it didn’t end well for all the disciples except John.
Dump the eggs and bunnies.

AuntieStella · 25/03/2019 19:18

"Easter decorations?! What are they?"

Blown eggs decorated with wonky felt tip and hung from twiggy buts (ideally with catkins on).

Fake eggs (a la Blue Peter) made from papier-mâché on balloons, then painted

Yellow pom-poms in a basket with straw that have come out every year since your DC brought them home from primary and explained they were easter chicks

Bonnets - the town where I was brought up had an annual competition (and that was way back in the last century)

Decorations have been around for at least half a century - the change is merely from homemade to bought

AloneLonelyLoner · 25/03/2019 20:28

NEVER. This is absurd. Why?

Stompythedinosaur · 25/03/2019 20:30

NEVER. This is absurd. Why?

Because seeing the dc's wonky handmade bunnies makes me happy, and it doesn't hurt anyone.

MoreSlidingDoors · 25/03/2019 20:37

When pagans adopted Christianity,

Adopted. Grin

On pain of death/torture. Lovely.

I'm not sure i understand your point. Who are you to tell people how and why they should celebrate Easter? and decide if they are actually celbrating Easter or not?

If you are Christian, which I'm guessing you are seeing as you seem to be very protective of Easter... then maybe you should be a bit less judgemental and a bit more Christian in your approach to things?
Presumably you do Lent "properly" I'm guessing you have spent the past couple of weeks in a quietly solemnity, seeking penance, sacrifice and almsgiving etc? and will continue to do so....

otherwise are you really celebrating Easter? Or are you just being a gate-keeper? and making people feel bad choosing how to celebrate Easter and whatever Easter may mean to them?

Matthew 7: 1-3 and all that jazz....

Lardlizard · 26/03/2019 00:01

Haha, all these people who have never seen Easter decorations! Pull the other one
I take it you’ve never heard of John Lewis, garden centres etc and of course you don’t have to even buy them you could actually decorate eggs with your children
You know eggs from hens, thats if you’ve ever heard of them ....Hmm

BackforGood · 26/03/2019 00:19

I've heard of John Lewis, and garden centres (not that I frequent either), but still haven't heard of Easter decorations going up in people's homes I'm afraid.

My dc's junior school did used to have an egg decorating competition as a fund raiser, but the idea of people decorating their homes for Easter is genuinely a new concept for me.
No issues with it, if that's how you want to fill your time / spen your money, just not something I've ever come across.

GummyGoddess · 26/03/2019 00:28

Do you have a picture of your decorations?

GummyGoddess · 26/03/2019 00:29

Definitely not mocking, I had people asking in disbelief when I mentioned my seasonal chocolate display Grin

3out · 26/03/2019 07:32

Gummy, I think you need to see this video (although you probably already have, I think!)

MrsExpo · 26/03/2019 08:13

Easter decks?? Is this now a thing? If so, not something that happens at out house.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 26/03/2019 08:30

Like others we have a willow twig with glass and blown and decorated eggs on. I never realised people were potentially looking upon it with horror!

Ellenborough · 26/03/2019 08:32

I'm in my fifties and until very recently (and even then, only on Pinterest) I have NEVER known anyone to decorate their house for Easter.

Easter eggs and Easter egg hunts, yes. Maybe the odd daffodil bulb in a pot to celebrate the arrival of spring. Making those bird's nest cakes out of shredded wheat and melted chocolate, maybe. Easter bonnets for school projects, maybe.

Decorations for the house? No. Never, ever have I seen a house where this has happened. I've nothing against it in theory - you can decorate when you like for whatever reason you like. But it's certainly NOT a traditional thing the UK. I suspect like very over the top Halloweens and baby showers and cake smashes and gender reveal parties and all sorts of other things, it's a recent American import and yet another thing to make us think we need to be spending our money and making a fuss.

I can't help but wonder how long it is before we start celebrating Thanksgiving. Confused

BloggersNet · 26/03/2019 08:38

We used to put up all the things we made at school plus some little green plants to grow. This was a day or two before easter though.

Peridot1 · 26/03/2019 08:47

My Easter decorations. Not the whole house. A jug of pussy willow branches and an assortment of decorated eggs. It takes me all of five minutes to do. Eggs alll bought while we lived in Eastern Europe.

It’s a big thing in Germany and other parts of Europe.

I’m still surprised at the shock and horror every year on here at the thought. And then people explain. And you still get people not reading the thread and expressing more shock and horror. Actually I’m surprised I’m still surprised.

When do you put your Easter decks up ?
Ellenborough · 26/03/2019 08:51

That sort of thing is nice Peridot. I've never done it but it doesn't annoy me or bother me in any way.

It's the concept of 'putting the decs up' and asking 'how early is too early?' that fills my head with visions of something else altogether.

Peridot1 · 26/03/2019 08:54

Yes I suppose I get that Ellenborough. I don’t normally plan when it gets done. Usually get some pussy willow coming up to Easter whenever I see it and put it all together a couple of days before Easter.

Namechangeymcnamechange11 · 26/03/2019 10:31

Glad no one else decorates for Easter! I opened the thread thinking "say whaaaaaat?". A palm cross gets blue tacked to the mantle piece, but that is it! Although we have DC at nursery now, so there may be a creation to display this year.

Worried2019 · 26/03/2019 10:34

@Singlenotsingle Easter is the resurrection of Jesus not the crucifixion!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤦🏼‍♀️

GummyGoddess · 26/03/2019 10:51

@Ellenborough I don't spend money on Easter decorations, they're just things I've made myself at various points. It's just something fun to brighten up the house for me.

Although thanksgiving does actually sound like a very nice holiday and I wouldn't mind celebrating it as a festival of being grateful for what we have. Not necessarily presents, but a nice meal and spending the day together would be lovely!
