I accidentally booked Truro, Canada, instead of the SW of England.

So, we have to go to Truro in the South West soon, for a weekend, for DDs obsession hobby. So, as usual, we had a good look on Booking.com.I like the lack of paying for cancellation.

I was looking on the app on my phone, DP was looking on his phone. He found a place that was far cheaper than any I could see. He kept on about it, until I asked him the name, googled it and got taken to it via the App. It gave the price in £££, so I booked it. It looked lovely.

The booking confirmation came through and it was in CAD! Took me a while to work out that meant Canadian Dollars. Then I looked and saw it was Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada. Lucky I could cancel straight away, but DD thinks it's hilarious, so, well I thought I would share our stupidity with you, so you can have a laugh and maybe make me feel better with similar tales.

Tried booking Granada from Manchester UK.
Bit puzzled why it required 3 stops, 52 hours and a ridiculous amount of money to get to Granada Spain.
Like the old Morcambe and Wise sketch with Andre Previn, the towns inland from Sydney Australia are 'duplicates' of the South East of England, but in the wrong 'order'.

I spent a year in Germany during my degree. Very little access to the internet at the time, so I booked my flight home for Christmas at the travel agency. She printed off the confirmation and I received the confirmation email.

When I tried to book in at the airport it turned out that it was a "confirmation" email, as in, please confirm that you are booking these flights Hmm

So, no flight booked and I had to wait 7 hours at the airport and spend a lot of money on a new flight home.

Only about a week ago my dh had to pick up a French colleague flying in to airport ( about an hour away from us) for a meeting with x company, x company has a small office in our city but their main operation is in a city 4 hours away, and yes that's where the meeting was , my dh asked French man what time his meeting was he said in an hour my dh explained they were hours away, the Frenchman almost cried as it turns out to get flight to our city rather than one he should have gone to, had meant he couldn't use his local airport and had had to drive some hours that morning to another airport. nor could he change flights direct to his local airport as his car was now hours away.

There's Puerto Rico, as in near the Caribbean, and then there's Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria (near Tenerife, as in one of the Canary Islands, for clarity and those whose geography is/was as poor as mine was back then. That's all I'll say about that.

Luckily no actual booking took place before the mistake had been realised Smile

VioletBlu · 22/03/2019 09:45

Oh and someone I know (not me this time!) thought that Brazil was in Europe, next to Spain and Portugal.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 22/03/2019 09:47

We ran a B&B near Alton in Hampshire.

Had quite a few bookings for Alton Towers (very much not Hampshire).

If you were flying to Perth on a commercial flight, @americandream, it's no wonder you ended up in Australia. The airport in Perth, Scotland doesn't do them!

OrigamiZoo · 22/03/2019 09:51

Turned up in London to attend a very expensive conference. Thought the place looked a bit quiet (Earls Court). Took my papers out to show the security and saw the date. It was held the day before. Blush

OrigamiZoo · 22/03/2019 09:55

Also got a call from Sainsbury's trying to find us for a grocery delivery. I was at home, he was in Devon looking for our holiday cottage which we were going to the following week. They were very nice about it, and said it happens all the time!

Tolstoy, Furry and Whonicked hello from another Truro poster.

@TolstoyAteMyHamster which do you think is the best fish shop to go to?

Missingstreetlife · 22/03/2019 09:57

Lived near a1 in Bedfordshire, going away for weekend, up a1 to the north. Booked a1cat kennel thinking we will drop off on the way. A1 also goes south to London where cattery is. 2 hour journey there and back before 5 hour journey north. Got a sitter next time.
My cousin clicked twice and had to find a friend to go away with. Also thought Euston was Houston.

I booked flights to Ireland once for a week in December, without realising I had actually booked the same dates in September. God knows how, I'm usually v careful. I had no idea until I turned up for the flight out, having of course missed my September flights. Amazingly they got me new tickets for nothing and were fine about it! Aer Lingus in case anyone's wondering who these paragons of customer service were (not Ryanair! :o)

I felt like the biggest numpty on the planet and was so grateful!

Notgoodatchoosingnames · 22/03/2019 09:59

Someone I know as a young teen got their dad to drive them to Bangor North Wales having secured tickets to see a BIG boyband she was obsessed with. Turns out they were in Bangor Ireland. Not a very happy dad for a long drive back to South Wales!!!

burgundyjumper · 22/03/2019 10:11

A friend of mine ended up going to Iceland instead of Ireland for a meeting Grin

x2boys · 22/03/2019 10:13

When I was visiting a friend in Boston (Massachusetts) I had to change at Newark airport ,when we got on the plane the captain announced the plane was going to Boston so anyone who didn't want to go to Boston needed to let the Stewards know to get off ,this was in the days before 9/11 so checking of tickets can't have been as strict .

burritofan · 22/03/2019 10:14

Not my mistake but waited in all day for a friend arriving from Australia on a Monday. She didn't show, I got worried, realised I didn't have her flight number to track her down. Messaged her on the off-chance. She hadn't yet set off, on Tuesday her time. But she thought she'd arrive on Monday "because of the time difference".

Becca19962014 · 22/03/2019 10:16

I had an interview in Liverpool. Got the train. Told to change at Wolverhampton. In Wolverhampton asked which platform and guard says I'm in luck the Liverpool Street direct train was due in soon and had only recently begun running!

Yep. That's Liverpool Street as in london as opposed to Liverpool lime street in Liverpool.

I was stuck on the train, was sodding direct from Wolverhampton there, got fined as the guard didn't believe someone could be so thick and had to find somewhere to stay overnight as I couldn't get back the same day.

Though I rang when I could to explain (pre mobile this was) I still got a shitty letter informing not to waste their time by reapplying. They didn't believe I could be so stupid.

Seriously, who names a bloody station in London Liverpool Street and the one in Liverpool itself Liverpool lime street?!?

NorthEndGal · 22/03/2019 10:18

I live in Halifax Nova Scotia Canada. Have some pity on us, as a province we need to get people here any way we can!
We have Truro, Sydney, Liverpool, Halifax, Dartmouth, Windsor and more.
Anything to get people to come visitWink

SileneOliveira · 22/03/2019 10:21

I was also on the receiving end of this confusion once.

I used to live in Cambridge, which had a really active Freecycle/Freegle group. Offered a lot of stuff, picked up a lot of stuff. All good. Can't remember what we were trying to get rid of but has a very polite email from someone interested in collecting, could I tell them my rough location, which I did. Several more emails went back and forth with the person getting increasingly confused with explanations like "just down the road from the big Sainsbury's" or "next street to the library".

Turns out she was in Cambridge, Massachusetts and not Cambridge, England. She didn't collect.

clairemcnam · 22/03/2019 10:26

I booked a work hotel for the wrong month. Turned up at the hotel after a long day of working to find there was no booking and they were sold out. They sorted out a booking for me in a sister hotel. The fact I was nearly in tears probably helped!

butteredbarmbrack · 22/03/2019 10:27

My husband booked theatre tickets when we had my parents staying and childcare on hand. Luckily I wanted to double check performance start time the night before, so I could work out what time I needed to leave work. Turned out he 'd booked the matinee - at least we still made the show, but it did require two apologetic conversations with bosses next morning for a very short notice afternoon off!!

viques · 22/03/2019 10:37

There was nothing wrong with my booking skills . I booked the flight on the right days, and the hotel on the right days.

It was a shame really that we rocked up at the wrong airport...........

JemSynergy · 22/03/2019 10:38

I booked a family holiday 6 months in advance and on the day we were rushing around just about to check in online and realised the children's passports had expired! Was not able to claim back the money on our insurance as it was out fault!

winsinbin · 22/03/2019 10:51

NorthEndGal

I was excited to see your post I will be in Halifax (your one, not the U.K. one) in early June as the end of a trip across Canada. . All I have booked so far is my flight back to the U.K. what would you recommend I see/do/wear?

PurpleCrazyHorse · 22/03/2019 10:59
