What did you call giving someone a lift on your bike?

And where in the country was it?

DH brought up near Birmingham called it a 'backie'

I was brought up in North Yorkshire, called it a 'croggy'.

Just seen a teenage lad giving a friend a handlebar croggy which is what brought it to mind!

Backer
Newcastle

Backie in Hants in the 80s; this was also the official term used by the police in Cambridge in the 90s when I got told off for doing it as a student!

NorthEndGal · 19/03/2019 16:11

In Canada we call it Doubling
Buddy 1 "Double me home? I'm running late!"
Buddy 2 "Back only though, I need to see!"

Hamsternauts · 19/03/2019 16:12

Backie South London

Whatsnewpussyhat · 19/03/2019 16:15

We used to get coloured bits of plastic free with cereal packets for the spokes. Can't remember them in detail now

They were called spoke dokies. Think out of a shreddies box. And the kelloggs reflector chicken from the cornflakes.

Blastandtroph · 19/03/2019 16:18

Think I'm the first to say - luggy (South East).

DuggeesWoggle · 19/03/2019 16:29

Yes spokey dokies!! I had tons on my bike, plus the frosties reflectors. Couldn't get the buggers off once they were on though and they made quite an annoying noise!

This was late 89s/early 90s.

Amazed at how long this thread has got while I've been at work!

A pegger.

South East. I think it was called that because of the legs you could put o your wheels for this very purpose!

Brakebackcyclebot · 19/03/2019 16:32

horrayforharoldlloyd · 19/03/2019 16:37

A backie if they’re on the seat/you’re standing, a crossie if they’re sitting on the frame in front of you. Buckinghamshire.

AfterSchoolWorry · 19/03/2019 16:40

A backer or a crossbar.

VeronicaDinner · 19/03/2019 16:41

Yes, that's them!! Had loads of those over my spokes. They were really annoying. But I was very committed to bearing the noise.

Feellikeashitmum · 19/03/2019 16:42

VeronicaDinner · 19/03/2019 16:48

@Feellikeashitmum

I moved to Leicester and discovered jitties. We just called them alleys when I was growing up. I also discovered what a bob is.
