And where in the country was it?

DH brought up near Birmingham called it a 'backie'

I was brought up in North Yorkshire, called it a 'croggy'.

Just seen a teenage lad giving a friend a handlebar croggy which is what brought it to mind!

A backie if they’re on the seat/you’re standing, a crossie if they’re sitting on the frame in front of you.

DuggeesWoggle · 19/03/2019 08:47

Although I don't think I have ever given anyone a croggy in my life - it was something the hard kids did really - like cycling along without holding on to the handlebars (how the hell did they do that?!)

A backie. I am from Lincolnshire.

But where I live now (Derbyshire) they call it a croggy. Apparently. Hmm

ChrisPrattsFace · 19/03/2019 08:48

Backie in Cumbria! Me and DH grew up opposites sides of UK, often have discussion of what things were called! (Monkeys blood or raspberry sauce is a delicate one in our house!)

DuggeesWoggle · 19/03/2019 08:49

If you called it a backie would it have been called the same if they were sat on the handlebars? Because then they would be in front of you and that would make no sense. DH didn't have an answer to that.

Mind you playground slang rarely made a lot of sense!!
