What did you call giving someone a lift on your bike?

And where in the country was it?

DH brought up near Birmingham called it a 'backie'

I was brought up in North Yorkshire, called it a 'croggy'.

Just seen a teenage lad giving a friend a handlebar croggy which is what brought it to mind!

It was a backie for me in Glasgow too.

HemlockStarglimmer · 19/03/2019 09:10

I didn't call it anything (London) but didn't have a bike. I came across the term backie when I lived in the West Country. Never heard any other name for it until I read this thread.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 19/03/2019 09:10

Backie in the Black Country.

frenchonion · 19/03/2019 09:12

BitchQueen90 · 19/03/2019 09:18

Croggy! I'm from the east Midlands but quite far north, not far from Yorkshire.

DuggeesWoggle · 19/03/2019 09:20

With the handlebar croggies, the person would sit on the handlebars and lean back a bit, hold on to the handlebars and the person cycling would be stood up and leaning forward a bit so supporting the person sat down. How they don't fall off is beyond me!

LongtimeLurker29 · 19/03/2019 09:29

Backie - South Wales

Or if you had a BMX and went on the pegs it would be a Peggie 😁

NoIsACompleteAnswerSometimes · 19/03/2019 09:29

Raised in western Australia, we called it a dinky. Can't remember what it was called in the south west, UK where we ended up living. I've got a vague idea it was called a "bunk up", ah different times!

GwenCooper81 · 19/03/2019 09:30

A backie if sat behind on the saddle while the rider rides.
A croggy if sat on the cross bar.
Oxfordshire and later Yorkshire. To the OP, I used to be able to bike ride for ages no handed.. Hard as nails me 😅DH maintains he could roll a fag and eat his sarnie while bike riding. In fact, I can still ride my bike no handed at almost 40!

Surfingtheweb · 19/03/2019 09:30

Dink in Western Australia. Short for double dinky IIRC.
