You know the one that comes in the little bags... what's in it? I'm having people round for curry tomorrow and want to make it...

I think its onion, cucumber, tomato, mint anf corriander...

Fortheloveofscience · 15/03/2019 19:29

What are you supposed to do with it? I always ignore mine. Does it go with the rice?

mimi14 · 15/03/2019 19:31

Thank you. I've got all those ingredients apart from mint, might still work.

I love scooping it up with popadoms 😍

The onion salad is my very favourite with poppadoms

MsMustDoBetter · 15/03/2019 19:34

I use onions, cucumber, tomato, coriander and bind it together with a teeny bit of ketchup and lemon juice and a picnic of salt.

exculpatrix · 15/03/2019 19:35

People actually eat that? I read a while back that those bags were one of the biggest sources of food waste in the UK, because almost everyone drops them straight in the bin.

TheMostBoringPersonEver · 15/03/2019 19:36

They are the best with poppadoms!

What is the orange desiccated coconut textured one?

Claphands · 15/03/2019 19:37

I love those onions! I agree with Katykins recipe-that’s the nearest tasting I’ve made.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 15/03/2019 19:37

I love those dips. Onion and cucumber is the best one. I eat it all.

SurgeHopper · 15/03/2019 19:38

What kind of onions though?

BigusBumus · 15/03/2019 19:38

I use it the next day when cooking, like making a chili or something. Saves having to chop an onion!

genome · 15/03/2019 19:40

The really basic one is chopped onion and ketchup, I asked once as a student (drunk) in a kebab shop!

IHaveBrilloHair · 15/03/2019 19:41

It's delicious sprinkled on chips which Dd always insists we get.

Lunde · 15/03/2019 19:42

I had tried making onion salad but it never tasted quite right.

But then I found this recipe and it is really nice - I didn't know about the very, very tiny pieces of lemon (they tend to disappear when the salad chills) but it is a lovely fresh taste

Not ketchup. A smidge of mango chutney and/or lemon juice bit of salt and sugar.

SoMuchToBits · 15/03/2019 19:43

It's called cachumber, and is lovely when homemade. I have a Madhur Jaffrey recipe for it.

Serves 4-6

8 oz tomatoes
3 oz onions peeled
4 heaped tablespoons chopped fresh coriander leaves
3/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground roasted cumin seeds (you dry fry the seeds until toasted then crush using pestle and mortar)

Cut the tomatoes and onions into 1/4 inch dice and put in serving bowl
Add remaining ingredients and mix

Atalune · 15/03/2019 19:44

Red onion very finely slice into half moons- the cover with lemon juice.
Then finely dice -
Cucumber
Mint
Coriander
Little bit of deseeded tomato
Some
Mustard seeds

Drain the onion and mix altogether, add a dollop of ketchup and a sprinkle or sugar.
Chill

Serve with curry.

So delicious.

PoppingBubbles · 15/03/2019 19:44

OP I have a recipe for this. It's from the Takeaway Secrets book, and although I haven't tried this one, every other recipe I've tried is the exact copy of the takeaway I'm trying to replicate.
If you'd like it, let me know and I'll post it up for you.

cushioncovers · 15/03/2019 19:47

I love the onion salad I chuck it on the top of my food and then it gets scooped up with the rest of it onto a popadom

cushioncovers · 15/03/2019 19:48

What kind of onions though?

Just raw white onions

AwdBovril · 15/03/2019 19:49

I love those onion salads.

CakeNinja · 15/03/2019 19:56

I love these scooped up on poppadoms, along with the minty yoghurt! It’s my highlight of the takeaway Grin

mimi14 · 15/03/2019 19:58

Thanks for all the replies, going to have a bit of a play around in the morning 😊 yes could I have the recipe please @poppingbubbles

I’m just placemarking really. But I’d say that onion bhajis are surprisingly easy to make.

Hornets · 15/03/2019 20:07

I think you also salt the onions to make them go all soft?

Anyway good luck! I love the onion salad and think it's a brilliant idea to serve them with your curry!
