You know the one that comes in the little bags... what's in it? I'm having people round for curry tomorrow and want to make it...

I’m Indian and this is my grandm’s recipe. I slice red onions and then dice cucumber and tomatoes. I deseed my tomatoes but it’s up to you. I then add some finely chopped coriander, a little red chilli powder, squirt of lemon juice and some mint sauce. You could use fresh mint but the sauce has a stronger taste and distribute more evenly. Season with salt and pepper. I’ve never used ketchup but I’m sure it will work if you don’t have lemon or mint sauce.

SummerHouse · 15/03/2019 20:13

You need the MINT! We use mint sauce and that's probably more authentic than fresh mint. We make it every time to save a quid saddos

SummerHouse · 15/03/2019 20:14

shadow you are very wise my mint sauce advocate. I am noting your exact recipe thank you.

whataboutbob · 15/03/2019 20:16

I suspect the onions are sliced fine then soaked in cold water for about 10 minutes, which makes them both milder and crunchier. I’ve tried it and it works well.

mimi14 · 15/03/2019 20:18

All the tips are so helpful. Wish I'd asked sooner to give myself more time to experiment. I think I've got mint sauce so I'll give that a try!

I really thought this was going to be a does anyone eat it . I didn’t realise anyone did

donajimena · 15/03/2019 20:20

I put mine on top of the curry. Try it!

SummerHouse · 15/03/2019 20:26

We love it starlight For us a curry would not be the same without it.
Soaking the onion is a revelation. We have always tried and failed to make onions sweet and mild like you get in a kebab shop but never succeeded. I think this is the key!

XingMing · 15/03/2019 20:27

Do not leave the salt out on health grounds. It's really important to the taste and to force the liquids out of the vegetables.

PoppingBubbles · 15/03/2019 20:32

yes could I have the recipe please @poppingbubbles**

Of course Smile

Onion Salad
(Indian Restaurant Style)

Serves 1-2

2 medium onions
1/4 cucumber
1 large tomato
1 teaspoon mint sauce
pinch of salt

Peel and slice onion. Place in bowl of cold water for 30mins. Drain & pat dry with kitchen paper. Place dried onions in large bowl.

Slice cucumber in half and scrape out seeds. Finely chop and add to onions.

Quarter tomato & remove seeds. Finely chop and mix in with onion and cucumber.

Add the mint sauce and mix it all together. Chill for at least an hour. Sprinkle with salt before serving.

PoppingBubbles · 15/03/2019 20:33

Just times ingredients to the amount of servings needed of course.

lori1963 · 04/07/2020 20:29

what dressing do they put on the slad

mindutopia · 04/07/2020 20:50

It’s called kachumber (or something close to it in the UK). There’s no dressing, just a bit of salt, pepper and lime/lemon juice. It’s a real thing in India as well (also comes in a dodgy little bag).

lori1963 · 07/07/2020 11:28

Thanks for info

doyounothavegoogle · 07/07/2020 12:29

Enjoying this thread. We don't live in the UK anymore so indian take-aways are not an option for us - but the onion salad was always my favourite bit. I have got reasonably good a making curries, but have never master the onion bit - the soaking sounds like a good tip.

MulticolourMophead · 07/07/2020 13:26

I think I'll be experimenting as well. I'd eat the salad without the curry.

lori1963 · 08/07/2020 06:54

I also love the curries too and make my own base sauce then add it to the meat , make my own chapatis and spicy onions too. Tastes just like the takeaways.

lori1963 · 08/07/2020 06:55

Anyone else make their own curries ?
