Dishwasher - Yay or Nay?

OhMyHolyCrap · 15/03/2019 19:15

Do you regret your dishwasher or do you love it?

It's just DS10 and I and it feels like a bit of a luxury but I really want one.

Is this pure laziness?

Do it! The dishwasher in our new home is only beaten by having a shower (we hadn't had one in our old home of 14 years before). Both are such luxuries and I wouldn't be without them!

PurpleWithRed · 16/03/2019 09:51

There are just two of us and we have a Fisher & Paykel Double Drawer dishwasher. Is's what it says - a top drawer and a bottom drawer with separate dishwasher function in each bit. It's perfect for us, we just use the top half most days but if we have people round the bottom half takes the overspill.

It is an expensive option, there may be less expensive alternatives, but I had a Life's Too Short moment and we splurged and it's been a brilliant addition to our lives.

Oliversmumsarmy · 16/03/2019 12:49

I want a second for things like cat litter trays and grimy stuff that I could just load in the dishwasher

My mother thinks they are a lazy indulgence. but I'm sure she just revels in making me feel shitty But seriously, best kitchen purchase ever, even over my magimix. (Mother must be right)

Oldraver · 16/03/2019 13:07

I insisted on one when I went back to full time work... the little trouper is now 28 years old

Oldraver · 16/03/2019 13:09

Purple I have been eying up the F+P one for ages as it would match the oven/hob, but are currently in a .....ooh it's so much money....dilemma

Connieston · 16/03/2019 13:10

I think it depends. With just me and two kids, and I'm not much of a cook, it would be overkill. I've not got one and wouldn't get one at the moment. Stuff goes in kitchen bowl, few suds with my marigolds on (or get kids to do it) and it's easy and quick enough. I managed Xmas fine without it too, even a family buffet with ten people, just little and often. Ok might have been handy then but that's once in a blue moon!

StarlightLady · 16/03/2019 13:34

It’s the next best thing after sex!

They use less water than conventional washing up, dishes come out really clean and it makes dinner parties fun.

Just remember to clean the filters and regularly run a proprity dishwasher cleaner through it.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 16/03/2019 13:47

We've only had ours since living in this house and I wouldn't be without it. We use the lidl dishwasher tablets and they work great and a good price too.

We're two adults, two kids and a cat. I quite like to bake and we both enjoy doing other stuff rather than washing up Grin

applesauce1 · 16/03/2019 14:19

I cook from scratch most days and the dishwasher always goes on at least daily for just the two of us (our baby is breastfed so doesn't contribute to this at the moment). My husband's mother chooses not to have a dishwasher and is very pious about that fact. My husband was initially reluctant to have one, as MIL's ideology had rubbed off, but now he would not be without this wondrous machine. A marriage saver.

Celticrose · 16/03/2019 15:44

I have been using a dishwasher for 23 years now. I just love it and even put things like my fridge shelves in it. I use the Fairy Platinum when on offer but recently also bought Persil tablets in one of those bargain shops. They were fine and worked out at I think 6p a tablet. I also when I remember I use the dishwasher cleaner maybe once a month. Got the fairy ones for half price in Asda.

JustBeingJobless · 16/03/2019 17:29

Absolutely love mine. I’d always said I wouldn’t have one as I didn’t see the point, but when I bought my house, there was space and plumbing for one, and a friend was selling a practically new one for £50 so I thought I’d give it a go and I haven’t looked back.

happymummy12345 · 16/03/2019 17:31

I would love a dishwasher. We don't have room for one though. But I'd love one

sueelleker · 16/03/2019 17:46

Love mine. We got it originally because our water is so hard I got sick of white marks on my glassware. We're now on our 3rd one. (After 35 years and 2 moves) I agree, you do need extra crockery though, unless you're going to run it every day.

Butteredghost · 16/03/2019 18:06

I have one (came with the house) but rarely use it.

Pros:

  • Amazing if you have a large family or are hosting a gathering
  • Gets wine glasses really clean

Cons:

  • With two people who won't fill it up for days. You have to run it half empty as you'll be running out of things. Also since so many things are top rack only, you'll be out of space on the top rack but with only 4 plates on the bottom rack.
  • Takes ages and is noisy (may not worry you depending on house lay out)
  • Many things can't go in - like non stick pans, and some things won't fit. Also if you wash plates with tomato sauce, eg, bolagnaise sauce, all the plastic containers in the same wash will be stained red.
  • Many of the use less water studies gave compared a dishwasher to washing a full load of dishes under running water! That isn't what a family of two would realistically do. We would use 2-3 plates, 4 cups and a pan and I could easily wash those in less than half a sink of water.
GiantKitten · 16/03/2019 18:20

We have a full-size one - there's only 2 of us at home now, & sometimes it's only run every 2nd or 3rd day depending on catering standards, but that's ok & as others say, it keeps the worktops clear! And they do leave things cleaner than handwashing, especially glasses.

If you get a small one you'll fill it quicker, & as long as you have enough crocks not to run out you can always run it full.

Babdoc · 16/03/2019 18:26

Buttered ghost - I’ve been putting all my non stick pans in my dishwasher for the last 20 years. It hasn’t harmed them so far!
I put everything in, life’s too short and busy to waste it washing greasy frying pans by hand.

HedgerowTree · 16/03/2019 18:30

Love it.
If you think it’s lazy do you want to go to the river to scrub your clothes on rocks?
Coming home from work and seeing clear work tops is worth it.

We run ours every day, even if not full it auto adjusts and uses less water than washing up.

Butteredghost · 16/03/2019 18:31

Oh really babdoc! Maybe I've been doing it wrong all this time. That's good to know because they are the worst thing to wash.

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 16/03/2019 18:32

100% yay to dishwashers.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 16/03/2019 18:37

For years I was against dishwashers.
I’ve now had one about a year.
I’d never go back.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 16/03/2019 18:39

Oh and we are a family of two and manage to fill it every day. But then I cook from scratch every day.

StarlightLady · 16/03/2019 18:47

Top rack only instructions are out of date. Modern dishwashers run at the same temperature throughout, so it doesn’t apply unless you have a really ancient machine.

If there are not many of you, or even if you are single, you don’t have to run it evety day. Most people have at least 6 place settings and enough pots and pans not to require them straight away again.

BarbaraofSevillle · 16/03/2019 18:58

There's 2 of us and we have 8 of everything, basically 2 x four place setting crockery sets, which doesn't seem particularly excessive and when most or all of these have been used, the dishwasher is just about full as there's also pans, oven trays, mugs, glasses, jugs, lunch boxes, cutlery and cat food bowls, so I don't understand why people always say you'll need loads of extra crockery if you have a dishwasher.

Herefortheduration · 16/03/2019 19:26

I've had one for 34 years now, well not the exact same one, lol. I lived in the states for a few years and then bought one here as soon as I came back to the uk. I can't imagine washing up for the 5 of us every day.
