Are there any foods that you wish were more popular where you are?

I wish that garlic flavoured snacks were more popular in the UK. Everything seems to be chilli flavoured. I used to be able to get lovely garlic and herb cashews and other nuts but they've stopped selling them. It's frustrating when you aren't a chilli fan.

I also wish that I could get more seafood flavoured snacks without going to specialist stores and as I'm not a fan of dark chocolate I'd love to have more flavoured options for milk, but it's usually nuts, caramel, orange or sea salt. The more interesting flavours e.g florals seem to be reserved for dark chocolate.

Also, we can now easily buy many American sweets. I'd like to see the same happen with Australian and NZ sweets. They have some really nice gums and chocolate bars. I don't want much I know.

Is there anything that you'd like to see more of in the UK or wherever you live?

Proper, original falafel.

If a place sells falafel, it's got sweet potato or mint or other random irrelevant flavours, and is served on a bed of something rather than in a pitta stuffed with salad and sauce.

Sigh.

Slowcookervegan · 14/03/2019 14:12

Vegan food thats not so spicy you can't eat it
Why do places do that? I hate spicy things

SeraphinaDombegh · 14/03/2019 14:15

Proper South American food, not the wishy washy tex-mex stuff that people think is Mexican. Good street food in particular, rather than lots of stuff involving puff pastry.

HalfBloodPrincess · 14/03/2019 14:17

A proper plate of pie, mash and liquor.
I’m an east Londoner living in Wales and it’s the thing I look forward to the most when I go back and visit my mum.

SenecaFalls · 14/03/2019 14:19

British back bacon. It's hard to find in the US.

gingerandsmall · 14/03/2019 14:20

Salt and pepper chips. I can get them from loads of places at uni but nowhere around my parents' house

BareBelliedSneetch · 14/03/2019 14:22

Proper eclairs and religieuses.

None of this cream filling business. They should have proper creme pat inside.

Pretty much every single small town in France has a bakery that can manage them. Yet we have cream filled abominations Angry

Mind you, I’d be twice the size I am if I could get them locally! So perhaps it’s for the best.

I wish my chip shop (in the Midlands) did cheese.

I have simple (Northern) needs

NeverHadANickname · 14/03/2019 14:23

Greg's sausage rolls 🙈😂 just savoury pies and pasties really. Not really much like that round here. Doesn't help I'm pregnant.

Mookatron · 14/03/2019 14:25

It's almost impossible to get an ordinary cheese or ham bap and a packet of prawn cocktail round here. Avocado on sourdough x a billion, but no soft round bap with or without salad, with grated cheese inside. Sigh.

Another vote for street food, I live in a part of the UK that is fairly diverse. Yet am astounded by the lack of authentic cuisine available.

Most streetfood stalls i come across are gimmicky and way overpriced for what they are selling.

Admittedly I have always gone off the beaten track when it comes to travelling and avoid the tourist zones in favour of the local businesses,
Cheap, delicious and humble food from the people who know it best.

Vitalogy · 14/03/2019 14:32

Chilled/fresh eggnog.

SheSnapsThenSheFarts · 14/03/2019 14:35

Rissoles in the chip shop. I grew up in Wales where they all did them, and a good chip shop made their own. I was looked at as if I had two heads when I asked for one when I first moved to England.

BastardGoDarkly · 14/03/2019 14:41

Tomato dip.

My grandpa (leeds) used to make the best, but Leeds market did an awesome one too, dont even know if they still do it up there!?

donajimena · 14/03/2019 15:01

Proper Spanish tapas. If you get croquetas from marks they have sodding potato in them!

DrDiva · 14/03/2019 15:24

Tamarillos!

And pineapple lumps.

serenawren · 14/03/2019 15:35

I live in the UAE so bare with me...

Proper authentic dim sum
Fish and proper chip shop chips
English Chinese food
British bacon that costs less than £10
Chicken salt
Battered sausages
Percy pigs

PutyourtoponTrevor · 14/03/2019 15:40

Peanut butter M&Ms
Coconut M&Ms
Mint M&Ms

And chicken that tastes of chicken

ineedaknittedhat · 14/03/2019 15:45

Pigeon pie. Bought one in York a few years ago and it was lush.

Elledouble · 14/03/2019 15:46

Proper falafel are a good shout!

Pfifferlinge and other interesting mushrooms that come into season in countries like Germany and get properly celebrated.

Moltenpink · 14/03/2019 15:48

Rock salmon from a chippy, never get it in the North.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 14/03/2019 15:54

Sushi

Hot4Holes · 14/03/2019 15:55

I’m with you on the garlic. Could just eat a massive garlicy, salty pretzel 🤤

Luxembourgmama · 14/03/2019 16:00

Chicken kiev. No one seems to know what it is in continental europe.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 14/03/2019 16:06

Kimchi. Proper kimchi, not the hideous, jarred, vinegary stuff they sell in supermarkets. Always tastes pickled not fermented.
And restaurant vegetarian food. Loads of fabulous restaurants in the city near to where I am but no vegetarian/vegan. You have to make do with the inevitable halloumi or goats cheese tart. There are fabulous vegan cafes but nothing open in the evenings.
