Are there any foods that you wish were more popular where you are?

I wish that garlic flavoured snacks were more popular in the UK. Everything seems to be chilli flavoured. I used to be able to get lovely garlic and herb cashews and other nuts but they've stopped selling them. It's frustrating when you aren't a chilli fan.

I also wish that I could get more seafood flavoured snacks without going to specialist stores and as I'm not a fan of dark chocolate I'd love to have more flavoured options for milk, but it's usually nuts, caramel, orange or sea salt. The more interesting flavours e.g florals seem to be reserved for dark chocolate.

Also, we can now easily buy many American sweets. I'd like to see the same happen with Australian and NZ sweets. They have some really nice gums and chocolate bars. I don't want much I know.

Is there anything that you'd like to see more of in the UK or wherever you live?

It is medium. No soft, and not hard. Lovely Yorkshire water Grin

BarbaraofSevillle · 15/03/2019 05:34

Unsweetened non fizzy bottled drinks that aren't plain water

These are starting to become commonplace in supermarkets. You have to look very carefully to avoid the ones with sweeteners in, but M&S have a nice lemon and ginger one, and a couple of other flavours and I've seen some in Asda and Sainsburys.

I'd like a decent independent restaurant in my village that's not an Indian. We have 4 pubs but 2 are nasty chains and the other 2 don't do food in the evening. I don't really like 'standard UK style' Indian restaurants but if we had a tapas bar, or good Mediterranean restaurant that did calamari or anything involving the sort of things you get on a mezze style meal, we'd go every week. We do have access to pretty much anything you can imagine, but it's all a car ride away.

"I wish that garlic flavoured snacks were more popular in the UK." This!

"I’m with you on the garlic. Could just eat a massive garlicy, salty pretzel" Tease!

I've lived in Northern Europe for several years and they love their garlic, also a much wider variety of cheeses and stronger ones too. Proper good smelly ones.

Like you I can't be doing with chilli, I like it but it doesn't like me unfortunately so I have to be careful.

I love dark chocolate and while I get what your saying about the flavour choices it's not particularly prevalent in the uk and it's bloody expensive!

German and Dutch food generally. I've been back in uk almost 20 years and I still miss so much. And no the versions you get here in aldi etc are not the same/as good and because the Brits never really took to it, much of what they did stock they no longer do.

"Mind you, I’d be twice the size I am if I could get them locally! So perhaps it’s for the best."
Unfortunately this is probable true for me too. Especially with German creamy potato dishes of all kinds, asparagus in hollondaise and Dutch pastries cakes and proper creamy hot chocolate!

Square sausage and Tattie scones

Koftas. Proper Turkish Koftas that I practically live on when I'm over there, not the horrible kebab shop version. I can make my own but doesn't help me when I'm out

TapasForTwo · 15/03/2019 07:25

Couldn't you replicate square sausages by removing normal sausages from their skins and reshaping them into square?

BillywigSting · 15/03/2019 07:28

@TapasForTwo everything in Yorkshire is lovely! Beautiful place (apart from the weather)
Your water will probably be alright for making soda bread Grin

You've clearly never had it. No it's an entirely different consistency and ingredients to English sausagemeat, it's also lightly spiced.

TapasForTwo · 15/03/2019 07:45

Mmm. Sounds delicious Graphista

BarbaraofSevillle · 15/03/2019 07:56

Morrisons sells frozen square sausage.

TapasForTwo · 15/03/2019 07:58

I'll have a look next time I go.

Rockbird · 15/03/2019 08:01

They were selling fresh square sausage when I did a Morrisons order through Amazon.

Graphista · 15/03/2019 08:09

It is I just wish veggie versions were more readily available

midsomermurderess · 15/03/2019 08:53

At risk of being controversial, Longley Farm Cottage Cheese.

beanaseireann · 15/03/2019 09:00

Rachel's Organic yogurt.
Tesco near us has delisted it Sad
The coconut is sublime

BarbaraofSevillle · 15/03/2019 09:05

midsomer How is Longley Farm cottage cheese contraversial?

It's just about the only nice cottage cheese available, but is it not available nationwide? I'm fairly near to Longley Farm, and most supermarkets and farm shops round here sell it.

Lidl and Waitrose do some that is barely acceptable and everything else is horrible in my experience. People who say they don't like cottage cheese have obviously never had Longley Farm, as it's so much nicer than everything else out there.

jjandtheseagulls · 15/03/2019 09:23

Lidl have got square sausage in at the moment

Orangelover · 15/03/2019 09:40

Roast dinners. Our local carvery shut down a couple of years ago and it's broke me as a person. I know roasts are available on a Sunday in places but what if I need one on a Tuesday or s Thursday? I do cook my own but it's time consuming. Need more readily available weekday roast dinners.

midsomermurderess · 15/03/2019 10:02

I was being tongue in cheek. How can one be controversial about cottage cheese.

BarbaraofSevillle · 15/03/2019 10:05

There's controversy about everything on here. Have you seen the thread running now about corned beef hash?

SoftBlocks · 15/03/2019 10:06

Deep fried, buttered black pudding and white pudding in chip shops like you get in Scotland.

SoftBlocks · 15/03/2019 10:07

Battered not buttered.

SoftBlocks · 15/03/2019 10:08

OMG Longley Farm Cottage Cheese, absolutely!

finallyfound · 15/03/2019 10:24

Never found Tahdig in any Middle Eastern restaurant in the UK.

Also, I used to love those Gü chocolate ganache pots they did in packs of 3. Haven't seen them in the supermarkets for yonks.

TapasForTwo · 15/03/2019 10:49

IMO Longley Farm cottage cheese is the only one worth eating.

Cuntforthebutter · 15/03/2019 11:15

RubaDubMum89 Do you have Farm Foods where you are? I saw a fake version of Lucky Charms in there for about £1 (didn't buy so no idea if they are any good).
