Are there any foods that you wish were more popular where you are?

I wish that garlic flavoured snacks were more popular in the UK. Everything seems to be chilli flavoured. I used to be able to get lovely garlic and herb cashews and other nuts but they've stopped selling them. It's frustrating when you aren't a chilli fan.

I also wish that I could get more seafood flavoured snacks without going to specialist stores and as I'm not a fan of dark chocolate I'd love to have more flavoured options for milk, but it's usually nuts, caramel, orange or sea salt. The more interesting flavours e.g florals seem to be reserved for dark chocolate.

Also, we can now easily buy many American sweets. I'd like to see the same happen with Australian and NZ sweets. They have some really nice gums and chocolate bars. I don't want much I know.

Is there anything that you'd like to see more of in the UK or wherever you live?

Scotch Pies. I live almost as far South East as you can get in England, I want a Scotch pie.

Rockbird · 14/03/2019 19:02

Batch bread, brack and tipsy cake. Irish in Surrey!

hugoagogo · 14/03/2019 19:03

Chips cooked in oil, not beef dripping. EnvySad

pourmeanotherglass · 14/03/2019 19:03

I live in Bristol which is pretty good for food options - I just need fussy dd2 to leave home so I can try more of them.

Jsmith99 · 14/03/2019 19:06

American crunchy Cheetos. They are like crack. I can demolish a huge ‘sharing’ bag at a sitting with a few beers.

I suppose my waistline should be grateful that British supermarkets don’t sell them.

AudTheDeepMinded · 14/03/2019 19:07

Vegetarian Haggis! Someitmes manage to stockpile some from M and S around Burns' Night but otherwise have to go without. Off to Edinburgh in May, might have to jettison some clothes on the way home and fill me bag with haggis!

canberramum · 14/03/2019 19:08

Sushi is a big one for me. It was everywhere in Australia and so cheap.

BillywigSting · 14/03/2019 19:11

Proper Irish brown (soda) bread.

There are supermarkets round here that sell what they claim is 'soda bread' but it is absolutely not the same stuff.

I can't even make it myself because finding the right flour is nigh on impossible.

Like a pp with the éclairs though, it's probably not really a bad thing, as the way to eat it is slathered with a heart stopping amount of proper butter, and occasionally a few nice crispy rashers fried in dripping.

RubaDubMum89 · 14/03/2019 19:13

Proper calamari - every single place I've tried, it's just cook from frozen, rubbery shite.

Proper noodles and bean sprouts! Not this stodgy, horrible, greasy tripe that's sold around here.

Lucky charms cereal you don't have to remortgage your house to be able to buy.

Politicalacuityisathing · 14/03/2019 19:17

Judas and Hot4 - edinburghfermentarium.co.uk/shop/ does amazing proper fermented kimchi (and other fermented wonders) and delivers.

MillicentSnitch · 14/03/2019 19:21

Staffordshire oat cakes. Just can't get them darn sarf.

TapasForTwo · 14/03/2019 19:21

canberramum I don't exactly live in a foodie area, but I can find sushi pretty easily.

My gripe is being able to find soft drinks not loaded with artificial sweeteners. Fortunately the current gin craze means I can find non diet tonic water very easily now.

What kind of flour do you need for soda bread BillywigSting? I thought it was normal wholemeal flour or a mixture of wholemeal and white flour which is readily available everywhere.

MothershipG · 14/03/2019 19:22

@Greyhound22, oh god yes pastizzi! (Also half Maltese) and proper Ħobż biż-Żejt. My brother would say Kinnie, but I've never been a fan 😂

MulderitsmeX · 14/03/2019 19:24

Cheese straws and sausage rolls! I once went on a 30 min expedition on my lunch break and almost got on the tube for a warm sausage roll!

LittleKitty1985 · 14/03/2019 19:25

Lotus root!

@Judashascomeintosomemoney Proper kimchi usually isn't vegetarian though (more's the pity!)

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 14/03/2019 19:31

I love garlic, and chilli. And onion.

Greyhound22 · 14/03/2019 19:41

MothershipG not Kinnie no 🤢 it's rank but I have ordered Cisk and Twistees online at extortionate prices 😳

MothershipG · 14/03/2019 19:51

@Greyhound22 we always used to bring loads of frozen pastizzi back with us, they travel surprisingly well 😂😂

There was a Maltese café in Hammersmith for a few years but sadly it has now closed.

Meet0nTheledge · 14/03/2019 20:00

Scotch pies here too (SE England). I used to be able to get them in Safeway but Safeway is no more.

Staffordshire oatcakes too, they have them in Sainsburys occasionally but not a regular item, never seen them anywhere else down here.

BillywigSting · 14/03/2019 20:11

@TapasForTwo you need stoneground flour really (but not strong stoneground which is what you tend to find in the UK and even then it's specialist and bloody expensive). Half whole and half white is fairly close, but not exactly right.

You also need proper buttermilk, which is less difficult to find though still not that easy and the right kind of water, which is just a touch more difficult to remedy!

beanaseireann · 14/03/2019 20:32

Fuji apples
You can buy Pink Lady, Jazz, Braeburn, Gala, Delicious- both Red and Green, Granny Smith etc but not Fuji.

AwdBovril · 14/03/2019 21:34

A takeaway that sold healthy food, like falafel & salad, sushi, or frankly anything that wasn't deep fried and/or covered in cheese.

Also, somewhere to buy decent fresh food beyond the usual meat & two veg sort of stuff.

TapasForTwo · 14/03/2019 22:39

@BillywigSting we have an old mill near us that sells stone ground flour. I will have to investigate. Is the buttermilk in the supermarket very different? The stuff I can buy is like a runny yogurt.

Desperateforspring · 14/03/2019 22:40

Dim sum.

Why no proper dim sum in 20 miles radius.

Lebanese food...

BillywigSting · 14/03/2019 23:01

@TapasForTwo no the buttermilk is the same, what sort of water do you have? If you have hard water be sure to filter it
