Are there any foods that you wish were more popular where you are?

I wish that garlic flavoured snacks were more popular in the UK. Everything seems to be chilli flavoured. I used to be able to get lovely garlic and herb cashews and other nuts but they've stopped selling them. It's frustrating when you aren't a chilli fan.

I also wish that I could get more seafood flavoured snacks without going to specialist stores and as I'm not a fan of dark chocolate I'd love to have more flavoured options for milk, but it's usually nuts, caramel, orange or sea salt. The more interesting flavours e.g florals seem to be reserved for dark chocolate.

Also, we can now easily buy many American sweets. I'd like to see the same happen with Australian and NZ sweets. They have some really nice gums and chocolate bars. I don't want much I know.

Is there anything that you'd like to see more of in the UK or wherever you live?

Empire biscuits and chicken pakora! I'm a Glasgow girl living in England and these things just don't exist down here :(

Greyhound22 · 14/03/2019 16:11

Pastizzi

sighs

I'm half Maltese and I dream about them. My Dad makes them sometimes but he never quite gets the pastry right. Nothing better than going out early in the morning to pick a fresh load in a brown paper bag.

Protestant traybakes Grin. Been reading the thread about Northern Irish protestant traybake culture and just wish it was more of a thing over here (North Yorkshire). We do have such things, it's just not such a big deal.

Really good gingerbread - biscuits, cakes etc. Like the German and Scandinavian ones. Really dark and spicy. Yum.

My vote is for pie, mash and liquor too.
There’s also no good Greek restaurants where I live anymore. There used to be one that did an amazing meze but it’s shut down now.
We’re inundated with street food here atm, which I must admit whilst brilliant at the start, the novelty is now wearing off.

FredaFox · 14/03/2019 16:22

Scatteredmama I had my first pakora in Glasgow last year. One of the new takeaways near me in Manchester does them. Not quite the same though

Grimbles · 14/03/2019 16:27

Proper pelmeni. My friends grandma was russian and made the most amazing pork/lamb ones. I've never found anything similar in the UK - grilled pork dumplings from the Chinese are close but the dough isn't quite right.

ConferencePear · 14/03/2019 16:28

I'll second
"Proper eclairs and religieuses." and also from France I would like to add grown-up asparagus - just don't serve me the baby stuff.

Shadow01 · 14/03/2019 16:34

Chips done in beef dripping not oil.

EssentialHummus · 14/03/2019 16:43

grimbles try Russian shops? DH is Russian (and pernickety) and happy with what he’s found in the UK.

I’d like ketchup and chutney flavoured crisps please (South African), along with South African NikNaks, which have been banned in the UK following a dispute with the UK maker of a different snack with the same name. They used to leave my fingers orange for days.

Oh god totally agree about kimchi! I got some at a posh farmers market thing, the stall was held by a Korean woman who made everything herself along with her mum.
Dear god it was delicious! Absolutely stunk the house out every time I opened it though.

I’d love more flavours like that available. You know something that really attacks the taste buds but not the usual supermarket pickle flavour

Wanderingnomad · 14/03/2019 16:48

Canned guavas. Tesco used to stock them and now no longer seem to do Sad

Lebanese bread. Proper firm tofu. Freshly made baklava and Greek pastries. Korean chips. And loads more specialty ethnic goodies...I moved from the big city to a small town and I really miss the variety of cuisines available.

TapasForTwo · 14/03/2019 16:50

There is a brilliant vegan eaterie in Sheffield Judashascomeintosomemoney

mrsk28 · 14/03/2019 17:06

Chocolate covered peanut butter stuffed pretzels from Trader Joe's in the US. Best thing ever.

ClashCityRocker · 14/03/2019 17:17

Square sausage.

I love visiting Scotland just for proper square sausage from the butchers.

MishMashMosher · 14/03/2019 17:23

Deep fried Mars bars. Can't find them anywhere anymore.

BloggersNet · 14/03/2019 17:23

I wish ready marinated meats came in more flavours than just spicy ones.

babysharkah · 14/03/2019 18:02

Shwarma.

CookPassBabtridge · 14/03/2019 18:43

I lived in the Middle East for a few years and salivate thinking of the food.. I wish there were takeaways/shops nearby that sold this stuff. But they're all in cities Sad

VanillaLatteAndCake · 14/03/2019 18:51

I watched documentary about Greggs many years ago (saddo!) and they talked about Stottie cakes in such a way, I really wanted one. Turns out it's only a N.East thing so no such luck. I don't even know what they taste like but they way they described them completely sold it to me!

Impatientwino · 14/03/2019 18:54

Sushi and noodles

A noodle bar opened here and I was so excited but it's still just stodgy muck.

We got them delivered and they were in a Chinese style box - when I tipped them out they retained the square shape of the box! Bleurgh!

I want lovely fresh noodles with tasty broth and spicy sides and prawns and oh dear I'm so hungry!

Kpo58 · 14/03/2019 18:55

Unsweetened non fizzy bottled drinks that aren't plain water. Everything is sweetened or water. Angry

Impatientwino · 14/03/2019 18:56

I also want to try chicken parm?? that gets mentioned a lot on here. I also wish our chip shop sold gravy but am down saaarf so unlikely I fear!

BlackPrism · 14/03/2019 18:58

I'm a proper foodie but live in London so I'm mostly very happy except as a Northerner the takeaways never seem to do bloody cheesy chips and gravy AngryAngry

BlackPrism · 14/03/2019 18:59

Oh and good Canadian/ North American seafood without costing a bomb would be lovely

BlackPrism · 14/03/2019 19:00
