Has anyone tried mouth taping??

i.e putting tape (that's meant for the face) over your lips to keep them closed at night to prevent mouth breathing and only breath through the nose?

It sounds very risky I know but apparently our natural reflexes would prevent us from suffocating and will naturally awaken us to take off the tape if our nose is obstructed etc. and generally seen as a fairly "safe" technique.

Has anyone tried it? Seen any positive effects from it? How long have you mean doing it? every night?

I tried it yesterday and seemed to go ok

HopeAndJoy16 · 09/03/2019 15:12

But...

Why?

TwixBix1 · 09/03/2019 15:16

Sorry I presumed the disadvantages of mouth breathing during sleep were well known about. Here is a link to a blog briefly explaining the benefits:

Yes, but during very kinky, dirty sex.

Guess that's not what you mean though, eh? Grin

PierreBezukov · 09/03/2019 15:22

I tried it years ago. Didn't notice much difference to be honest. I'd be interested to hear if you stick with it, how it goes. Why do you think you need to do it?

Wiifitmama · 09/03/2019 15:24

What an interesting article. I felt like it described me! I would consider it but I have a severe allergy to adhesives on my skin and would be worried about that.

foxyfemke · 09/03/2019 15:26

I think you'd be much better off seeing an ENT consultant.

FurrySlipperBoots · 09/03/2019 15:32

That doesn't sound safe at all! Take specialist advice.

Sparklingbrook · 09/03/2019 15:37

Sounds horrible. I would get no sleep at all with my mouth taped shut. Sad

kingfisherblue33 · 09/03/2019 15:40

Foxy - I think you'd be much better off seeing an ENT consultant.

That made me laugh so much. Such a sensible answer!

HelmutFrontbut · 09/03/2019 15:41

I thought this would be about an Edina Monsoon-type diet Grin

Sparklingbrook · 09/03/2019 15:41

YY I thought it would be food related too.

SnuggyBuggy · 09/03/2019 15:41

I didn't know this was a thing.

SmallFastPenguin · 09/03/2019 15:43

It sounds uncomfortable I wouldn't get to sleep.

Sparklingbrook · 09/03/2019 15:43

What's it for?

BeGoodTanya · 09/03/2019 15:44

I thought this was going to be a sex discussion. Boo.

RaspberryBubblegum · 09/03/2019 15:45

But don't you usually only breathe through your mouth if your nose is blocked? I only ever breathe through my mouth unless I have a blocked nose so tape wouldn't help that.

Haggisfish · 09/03/2019 15:46

I hadn’t heard of it but will try it now! Think I’ll just try with surgical tape to start with.

PierreBezukov · 09/03/2019 15:46

When I was in Hong Kong years ago this was a thing. It is part of the Buteko method of breathing (a cure for asthma). Breath through the nose at all times, not the mouth. It increases lung capacity and overall health.

PierreBezukov · 09/03/2019 15:47

I have done it myself and it is perfectly safe.

A relative was also advised to do this as part of treatment for ME.

Catquest1 · 09/03/2019 15:47

I think i would be cautious tbh - if you are a mouth breather I would want to know whether it was habiutal or because of nasal obstruction etc before i started taping my mouth.

I would second the advice to get an ent opinion or a specialist consultant in sleep disorders if you are worried about a sleep related disorder

FleurNancy · 09/03/2019 15:47

I'm so up for taping my DH's mouth, his mouth breathing gives me the rage.

Itssosunny · 09/03/2019 15:48

If your nose gets suddenly blocked you could be in trouble.
