Has anyone tried mouth taping??

i.e putting tape (that's meant for the face) over your lips to keep them closed at night to prevent mouth breathing and only breath through the nose?

It sounds very risky I know but apparently our natural reflexes would prevent us from suffocating and will naturally awaken us to take off the tape if our nose is obstructed etc. and generally seen as a fairly "safe" technique.

Has anyone tried it? Seen any positive effects from it? How long have you mean doing it? every night?

I tried it yesterday and seemed to go ok

For me it is habit. My nose it clear and if I close my mouth I can breath through my nose. But I have to think about it to do it. As soon as I stop trying I go back to mouth breathing.

I would not take health advice from a ‘wellness’ quack website.

Hello folks - just popping our heads around the door to remind you all that, while MNers are undoubtedly a font of knowledge, we strongly recommend you only follow medical advice from a trained professional.

That first 'article' is just an ad masquerading as a blog!

I breathe through my mouth AND I snore sometimes and I’m perfectly able to get 8hrs of sleep a night.

What a lot of dangerous tosh.

I thought this thread would be a stressed out mum of a preschooler!!

Rhubarbisevil · 09/03/2019 15:56

I showed the article to DH who said that it wouldn’t be long before I held his nose closed and then told the coroner “the stupid man taped his mouth shut, what do you expect?”

TheMuminator2 · 09/03/2019 15:58

er yup would NOt recommend this AT ALL!!!!

freelancedolly · 09/03/2019 15:58

I love that someone has developed an actual product for it

Missingstreetlife · 09/03/2019 15:59

NOT a treatment for m.e. Very dangerous.

Mouth breathing, snoring can be symptom of sleep disorder esp if you have fat neck. Get medical advice. (losing weight can help so could be about food)

Clarabellawilliamson · 09/03/2019 15:59

I has bells palsy when I was younger which meant I couldn't blink properly with one eye for a while, or close it properly when I slept. It got really dry so the GP suggested using tape to keep it shut at night. It was horrible, I would wake up in a panic and rip it off.
I would definitely imagine taping your mouth would be similar?!

BrizzleMint · 09/03/2019 16:01

I'd only recommend it if you have a burning desire for a Darwin Award. It's a crazy idea.

SoupDragon · 09/03/2019 16:02

You don't tape the entire mouth shut. Just one small piece vertically. And it's with micropore tape, not duck tape. If your nose was somehow obstructed, you'd open your mouth. It just stops it dropping open.

DCs orthodontist recommended it.

SmallFastPenguin · 09/03/2019 16:27

I have considered taping dh mouth closed during the day when he starts off ranting about the Brexit or something.

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 09/03/2019 16:27

Yeah...no.

I know some people who tape their mouths for exercise, but I would feel a bit uneasy doing it during sleep. It's probably silly, because if you can't breathe you should automatically wake up, but even so.

HotChocolateLover · 09/03/2019 17:48

No way would I do this. I’m epileptic and wouldn’t fancy choking on the tape during a seizure 😥

30under · 10/03/2019 13:04

Interesting article. Better sleep quality is enticing!

Itssosunny · 11/03/2019 11:35

No normal person would do it, sorry.
