Why do men flirt?

Fing · 08/03/2019 20:19

If unavailable/in relationships... and show interest in younger women.

To prove a point?
Because they want to sleep with them? In which case would they want to do the same with any woman?
Etc

Why are you singling out men? Plenty of women flirt whilst in relationships.

Palominoo · 08/03/2019 20:24

Flirting doesn't necessarily mean a person wants a physical encounter. It's possible to flirt with both sexes of any age as a way of banter or good natured fun.

Pomegranatemolasses · 08/03/2019 20:25

Same question could be asked of women - am sure there are a myriad of reasons why flirtation occurs.

Er, it's great fun?

I love to flirt, particularly if it's basically banter with a like-minded person, who can play along for fun.

DH just laughs.

Fing · 08/03/2019 20:27

Ok let me rephrase - not flirt per se but employ body language indicating that they are interested in the other person.

I don't know op.

I have the same question - why do they actually bother? If nothing will come of it?

formerbabe · 08/03/2019 20:30

Ego boost

Fing · 08/03/2019 20:36

It looks like on a subconscious level they really desire this person. It’s textbook and not difficult for anyone vaguely knowledgeable about body language to read. But it’s otherwise kept under wraps

Because they want to & one day they might get reciprocating behaviour?

Adversecamber22 · 08/03/2019 21:56

Boredom?

marvellousnightforamooncup · 08/03/2019 22:01

Ego boost. Flirting is fun and it makes you feel good if you think someone fancies you even if nothing comes of it. Not that I flirt, I have no interest.

Fing · 08/03/2019 22:03

Surely the flirter is the one doing the fancying though?

OP posts:
Birdsgottafly · 08/03/2019 22:05

Some will do it because they might be taken up on the offer.

Some for an ego boost.

Some because it keeps their sexual spark lit, until they can get together with their Partner.

Some because it's a bit of fun.

Birdsgottafly · 08/03/2019 22:06

"Surely the flirter is the one doing the fancying though?"

As a Woman, who has always been flirty, no, you don't have to fancy the person.

Is this your partner? Or husband?

LaurieFairyCake · 08/03/2019 22:16

I flirt when I get the chance. It's fun to be admired, desired, bantered with. I only flirt with people who are as uninterested in cheating as i am.

It's like a nod to the past. It literally means nothing apart from 'once we used to be young'.

BroomstickOfLove · 08/03/2019 22:17

I flirt with most of my friends. It's a fun, bonding thing, and there's no way I'd have sex with any of them.

Fing · 08/03/2019 22:29

AnchorDown yes

He s doing all the textbook signs of attraction to a friend of mine but on the surface being polite and kind. I have no doubt he will do anything, hell he’s not even flirting really

But he hooks his hands through belt loops talking to her, puffs out chest, fingers through hair, feet always facing her... Struggles to make eye contact... Brushes past her. Does anyone know what I mean?

Fing · 08/03/2019 22:29

She is good looking and my polar opposite, looks about ten years younger than me toi

Whatdoyouknowwhenyouknownowt · 08/03/2019 22:42

Ah, but that's not flirting, that's attraction.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 08/03/2019 22:51

Okay, so he's not flirting, but you have noticed that he's attracted to her?

If he's attracted to her but doing nothing about it, I don't think it's quite the same as your OP here. He's not having a flirt.

Can you talk to him about it? Is there an insecurity at play here, or is it just this situation? Is he usually trustworthy?

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 08/03/2019 22:52

(Adding that brushing past her is a bit over the line...)

GregoryPeckingDuck · 08/03/2019 22:57

Right so not flirting then. The answer is that it is what it looks like. When people use body language that indicates interest this is usually because, at least on a subconscious level there is interest. But not always directed at that person in any concious way. I have to very very careful not use body language tha signals sexual interest because I do this out of habit and probably because on a subconscious level I have a high sex drive and the sexual body language is an expression of that. It doesn’t actually mean anything. My stroking my neck isn’t a signal to the man across the room to meet me by the fire escape in ten minutes. It’s just a bad habit possibly with a root in my libido.

Fing · 08/03/2019 23:15

So you think he may not fancy her it’s just him being a man? I am insecure yes as I feel like she is a beautiful woman and he is attracted to her. I don’t think he will do anything, she’s kind and friendly around him, she’s by nature a very gregarious and playful person
