Neighbours have no blinds

FaFoutis · 04/03/2019 20:23

My neighbours at the back have built a huge glass extension, the size of a petrol station, and it is lit up with bright white light. They have no blinds (they said they can't put blinds in it) so I have watched them have their breakfast and dinner and had the white glare all winter.

At the moment the woman is putting away the dishes from dinner wearing a pink tracksuit. I can see this from 5 of my 6 windows. It used to be dark and private before this eyesore and I'm finding it so depressing. The woman who lives next door but one to me has the same view, she talked to me about it and she cried. So not just me.

What should I do?
Option 1. Aim to piss them off so much that they get blinds (I don't believe the blind thing). I don't know how though. Install faulty security lights in my back garden? Get a massive sign that says 'get some fucking blinds'?
Option 2. Somehow screen them off. Their house is raised above mine and the extension is huge so I can't think how.
Option 3. Get therapy to stop being bothered by it.

I do shut the curtains, but there the fucker is again when I open the curtains.

Why is it bothering you so much?

They are the ones that can easily be seen and if they don’t care why do you?

EdWinchester · 04/03/2019 20:30

Screen them off, if you can as it bothers you.

We have no curtains or blinds downstairs in our house. We're not overlooked but even if we were, I wouldn't have blinds as I hate them. My next door neighbours have an enormous orangery with no blinds. Blinds would ruin it imo.

So screening from your side sounds like the answer.

kimlo · 04/03/2019 20:31

I can't imagine ever crying because I can see my neighbour doing her dishes.

FaFoutis · 04/03/2019 20:32

Because it is hideous and I miss the way it was before. Maybe also because they are selfish bastards. But I do agree that I should be less bothered.

I need a screen 20fit high then. What could I use?

Nicknacky · 04/03/2019 20:35

Well, it’s there now so you need to get used to it?

How exactly are they selfish bastards? Because they extended their house?!

RippleEffects · 04/03/2019 20:37

So you have no blinds either if you're looking out at them?

Cherrysoup · 04/03/2019 20:38

Normal fence topped with trellis isn’t going to cut it, is it? Leylandii it is! I’d be SO pissed off with that shitty glare spoiling my view every time I looked out. Even the neighbour’s security light 100 feet away pisses me off. Why does he leave it on all night for the past fucking 16 years?!

IncrediblySadToo · 04/03/2019 20:39

Get blinds yourself. Seems like a simple solution 🤷🏻‍♀️

FairyMoppings · 04/03/2019 20:39

...she talked to me about it and she cried

Rather an over dramatic reaction to someone's extension!

Surely, when they applied for planning permission, you were notified and could've contested it?

FaFoutis · 04/03/2019 20:40

They are selfish bastards because they have made ruined the outlook of at least 5 houses.

I have blackout blinds. You can see the glare around the edges.

pelirocco123 · 04/03/2019 20:40

I must be your neighbour...btw the pink tracksuit is me naked, sorry about that

Prequelle · 04/03/2019 20:40

Honest to bloody god are people's lives so perfect that this is what tips them over the edge. Crying about it?!!

And there's an awful lot of snobbery going on in your OP. What's her pink tracksuit got to do with anything?

Maybe stop watching them it's creepy Confused

ballsdeep · 04/03/2019 20:42

Surely you would have been notified when they applied for planning permission?

IceIceCoffee · 04/03/2019 20:42

I think you need a hobby op this amount of watching isn’t normal

Nicknacky · 04/03/2019 20:43

It’s in their garden so how has it spoiled the outlook? It’s their property.

You might not like it and that’s your prerogative but you can’t expect your neighbour to not extend their house because you would rather see grass. THATS selfish.

FaFoutis · 04/03/2019 20:43

Pink tracksuit is just a fact. Snobbery?

Planning permission does not mention having no window coverings and lights of nuclear brightness being on day and night.

ballsdeep · 04/03/2019 20:43

The extension isn't going anyway, surely you could see it from space of it is so bright it gets through your black out blinds?!?!

Nicknacky · 04/03/2019 20:44

Why is her clothing even relevant? You haven’t mentioned the clothing of any other residents.

EdWinchester · 04/03/2019 20:45

Thankfully, planning permission does not extend to forcing people to cover their windows if they choose not to.

Prequelle · 04/03/2019 20:46

Pink tracksuit is just a fact. Snobbery?

Nah I'm not falling for that one. If she had a naice outfit on you wouldn't have mentioned it. You mentioned it to be further demeaning towards her.

RippleEffects · 04/03/2019 20:47

How high is your fence?

I'd go for at least 8ft painted or stained in a dark colour with feature planting in front. Then odd as it may sound I'd use decent quality spot lights in the garden to highlight/ outline feature plants. Their light should then be sort of drowned out so its like low background rather than your focus.

FaFoutis · 04/03/2019 20:48

Sorry for you Cherry. I think you might be right about the leylandii. Looking them up to see how fast and tall they grow.

IncrediblySadToo · 04/03/2019 20:48

Then get Roman blinds on the outside of your window frames in front of the blinds 🤷🏻‍♀️

FaFoutis · 04/03/2019 20:50

I have no doubt that it is a very expensive pink tracksuit, she clearly wants everyone to see it.

OP posts:
FaFoutis · 04/03/2019 20:51

I see your point Ripple, thanks, so a kind of distraction too. That's a really good idea.
