Neighbours have no blinds

FaFoutis · 04/03/2019 20:23

My neighbours at the back have built a huge glass extension, the size of a petrol station, and it is lit up with bright white light. They have no blinds (they said they can't put blinds in it) so I have watched them have their breakfast and dinner and had the white glare all winter.

At the moment the woman is putting away the dishes from dinner wearing a pink tracksuit. I can see this from 5 of my 6 windows. It used to be dark and private before this eyesore and I'm finding it so depressing. The woman who lives next door but one to me has the same view, she talked to me about it and she cried. So not just me.

What should I do?
Option 1. Aim to piss them off so much that they get blinds (I don't believe the blind thing). I don't know how though. Install faulty security lights in my back garden? Get a massive sign that says 'get some fucking blinds'?
Option 2. Somehow screen them off. Their house is raised above mine and the extension is huge so I can't think how.
Option 3. Get therapy to stop being bothered by it.

I do shut the curtains, but there the fucker is again when I open the curtains.

Get a sex pond and put it on a raised platform. Then advertise a swingers hot tub party on Facebook. You don't have to join in. Hopefully they wont want to either.

Howzaboutye · 06/03/2019 12:28

Did you know that unless you also have all your lights blazing and curtains open, they might not be aware of how glaring it is?

And how much you can see them.

Alternatively they perhaps just don't care.

Hope it's not that though

FaFoutis · 06/03/2019 12:56

They know they are causing distress and have seen the eyesore from our perspective. They don't care.
Faced with a representative from each of the 5 affected houses the woman's conclusion was that "all our neighbours liked us where we used to live". They think we are being unreasonable.

Could the nearest do a running commentary of them using a loud hailer? I could imagine teens being up for that...

SirVixofVixHall · 06/03/2019 13:25

Large mirror is a huge bird hazzard I’m afraid, they fly straight into them, they can be lethal to birds, so tempting as it is I wouldn’d do that.

bobstersmum · 06/03/2019 14:13

Ahhhh it's nearly summer

AcrossthePond55 · 06/03/2019 15:02

Set up chairs in your garden arranged with a centre aisle and invite the neighbours for the 'evening show'. Turn on floodlights aimed at neighbours house and pass down the aisle handing out popcorn and libations.

Install the mirrors, but put large, garishly coloured pinwheels on sticks in front to deter birds. Or wind chimes. Lots of wind chimes.

LilQueenie · 06/03/2019 15:45

Invite a load of jehovahs witness'es around and keep pointing over. Failing that get dark robes an upside down pentagram (big one) and start chanting in their direction. Grin

Mumsnet witches are out this afternoon

ScoobyCan · 06/03/2019 16:10

Do your windows have apertures?

Could you do something like this? It's what friends have done - it keeps the focus OFF the Storefront-type extension (think retail store outlet size windows and accompanying lighting... similar to yours I think) and ON the lovely (and really irritating to dust) things on the shelves instead.

This may be useful

Loubilou09 · 07/03/2019 17:32

God that would really piss me off. I don't understand all the sanctimonious posts saying anything other than that.

Not sure what you could do, but it would be very tall trees or moving for me.

How bloody inconsiderate.

claybakefan · 07/03/2019 18:34

Am I the only one that keeps coming back to this thread hoping to see a photo? Blush

HeronLanyon · 07/03/2019 18:35

No

itsbritneybiatches · 07/03/2019 18:47

Get one of those lasers that you use for playing with cats.

internetpersonme · 10/03/2019 08:00

Really @Nicknacky you don't mind people staring at you in your house? I always wondered if people didn't notice or really didn't care.

The road next to mine has 3 busy double decker bus routes its central London so a bus every 3 mins at least. And night buses. The top decks go past flats and are eye level with the windrows and people will have their curtains open right by the bus stop I don't get how you can relax sign different people looking in every few minutes.

I'm sat in my pjs drinking tea would hate strangers to be looking at me it really doesn't bother you???

CottonSock · 10/03/2019 08:05

It sounds horrible and I'm surprised it got planning permission. Thankful my neighbour didn't do this!

0rion · 10/03/2019 09:12

The sheer ignorance in this thread is staggering unless the trolls have been given a day release...

OP, legally, there is something you can do - if the bright lights are causing problems such as disrupted sleep you can deal with it through the Environmental Protection Act 1990:
www.gov.uk/guidance/artificial-light-nuisances-how-councils-deal-with-complaints#what-can-cause-artificial-light-nuisances

Explain methods you have used to mitigate the light tresspass, such as blackout blinds, approaching your neighbour, etc. Contact your local authority and good luck.

By coincidence, this image came into my inbox as I was reading this thread.
This trend for huge open plan spaces is all well and good if you live in a secluded area, but imagine having something like this at the bottom of your garden. I know I'd hate it.

You could go all Rear window on them.

LondonBelongsToMe · 10/03/2019 11:24

I agree with those who suggest a new hobby. Make it pigeon fancying and then see how much fun their glass box is...

ForalltheSaints · 10/03/2019 11:35

Are you 100% sure it got planning permission?

TSSDNCOP · 10/03/2019 11:48

The OP is not a badger

Thank you Chardonnay Bear

woollyheart · 10/03/2019 15:47

@LondonBelongsToMe Excellent suggestion- pigeon fancying 😁

OddCat · 10/03/2019 16:04

I think they should ban those awful 'daylight' light bulbs. I bought some by mistake, put them in and was almost blinded! They give off such a harsh light.

Could you borrow one of those theatre spot lights and train it on Mrs Tracksuit while she's doing her thing? She'd love to be on the stage I'm sure!
