Neighbours have no blinds

FaFoutis · 04/03/2019 20:23

My neighbours at the back have built a huge glass extension, the size of a petrol station, and it is lit up with bright white light. They have no blinds (they said they can't put blinds in it) so I have watched them have their breakfast and dinner and had the white glare all winter.

At the moment the woman is putting away the dishes from dinner wearing a pink tracksuit. I can see this from 5 of my 6 windows. It used to be dark and private before this eyesore and I'm finding it so depressing. The woman who lives next door but one to me has the same view, she talked to me about it and she cried. So not just me.

What should I do?
Option 1. Aim to piss them off so much that they get blinds (I don't believe the blind thing). I don't know how though. Install faulty security lights in my back garden? Get a massive sign that says 'get some fucking blinds'?
Option 2. Somehow screen them off. Their house is raised above mine and the extension is huge so I can't think how.
Option 3. Get therapy to stop being bothered by it.

I do shut the curtains, but there the fucker is again when I open the curtains.

Flashing lights in your garden or those projector lights aimed at them

flamingofridays · 04/03/2019 20:52

I dont understand how this has ruined your outlook. If they've extended their house then surely you were previously still looking at their house all be it maybe less bright?

You could move?

Nicknacky · 04/03/2019 20:52

She really doesn’t care if you see her expensive tracksuit.....

flamingofridays · 04/03/2019 20:53

Also do you really honestly think she gives a shit about you and your opinion on her tracksuit?

Shes clearly got better things to do that creep on and cry about her neighbours!

Bringbackthestripes · 04/03/2019 20:54

I assumed op was just pointing out in detail how much she can actually see. At least she wasn’t naked op-my DH dashed downstairs nude to grab his iPad from the kitchen yesterday morning and, as we are mid refit, the blinds have been removed Shock

Tomtontom · 04/03/2019 20:54

I have blackout blinds. You can see the glare around the edges.

Blackout blinds with a gap at the edge are pretty useless! Get some that fit properly?

megletthesecond · 04/03/2019 20:55

I'd enjoy being nosey tbh.

How can they live without blinds though? Don't they ever wander around half naked? I'm often taking my running kit off in the kitchen while I boil the kettle.

pictish · 04/03/2019 20:56

Well this would piss me right off. Massive ugly glass extension with no blinds, making everything the inhabitants do, visible. I don’t want to see anyone unloading their dishwasher in a giant fish tank directly across from my house. Fuck off!

Biancadelrioisback · 04/03/2019 20:57

Stand nude in the window

VelvetPineapple · 04/03/2019 20:57

There’s no way you can put blinds or curtains at such a huge window. 1. It would cost a fortune. 2. It would look awful and not in keeping with the contemporary style. 3. The sheer size and weight of such a large blind or curtain would make it impossible.

I wouldn’t plant a hedge that they could complain to the council about because it’s too tall. Bamboo is exempt from high hedge legislation, or if you’ve got a bit more cash you could plant pleached hornbeams which are also exempt because they’re not evergreen.

FaFoutis · 04/03/2019 21:01

Thanks velvet, I'll look at bamboo. Non-evergreen is no good.

I have considered the nude thing and may resort to it.

Exactly it pictish.

Before the eyesore it was just trees. I agreed to the extension because I did not expect a massive, permanently lit glass box at the bottom of my garden.

Go read a book or something?
Join an evening class?
Your obsession isn't healthy.

LilQueenie · 04/03/2019 21:02

she wants you to see her expensive tracksuit...

How does one wear any clothing and not be seen in broad daylight?

aphrodite219 · 04/03/2019 21:02

@Biancadelrioisback love this idea haha

userxx · 04/03/2019 21:03

How long has it been up? Maybe it will just take a while to get used to it.

EdWinchester · 04/03/2019 21:04

But bamboo? It's so naff.

A pleached hedge is a good idea. Our neighbours have one at the front and it looks very smart.

FaFoutis · 04/03/2019 21:04

Anything who thinks this is creepy:
Do you ever look out of your windows? Whenever I look out of my windows, or even catch a glimpse in passing, I can see the fuckers.

They are boring. No entertainment value.

Get some search lights off EBay and shine them into your neighbours’ eyes.

FaFoutis · 04/03/2019 21:05

This is the second winter of it.

rumptifizzer · 04/03/2019 21:06

Can we have a picture of how it is? Also can you send to the planning authority that passed it and see what they think?

WhatWouldChristineCagneyDo · 04/03/2019 21:07

Naked disco in your back garden twice a week. With any luck they'll change their minds about the blinds.

littlecloudling · 04/03/2019 21:08

Get bamboo

Girlzroolz · 04/03/2019 21:08

There’s an unavoidable period of grief with these things, while you and your neighbours mourn what you’ve lost. I’ve been through it a couple of times, and I’m a tough cookie. You just can’t process that what you had is gone forever, and cant imagine getting used to the new reality.

It does get better, as with all grief. Wait to make decisions about screening until the grief wears off a bit. You’ll make better decisions. You have my sympathy.

FaFoutis · 04/03/2019 21:10

I daren't post a picture here.
I looked up planning regulations and there doesn't seem to be anything about light pollution - that's the main problem I think. I haven't looked into their specific planning permission though, that's a good idea.

LuckyLou7 · 04/03/2019 21:11

Is it really the size of a petrol station? Isn't it just a big conservatory type extension and you're a teeny bit jealous?
