Bloody hell - a tin of Heinz beans isn’t what it was, is it?

I had to add a good squirt of brown sauce and a dollop of salt just so I could taste anything!

Is this due to some sort of health drive? Seems counterproductive to me, if so - I never used to put salt on my food.

DS is always rolling his eyes at me when I complain about how things don’t taste how they used to, but I swear they don’t! He reckons my tastebuds have gone decrepit, the cheeky bugger.

So, is it me, or do some things taste blander now?

And can anyone recommend beans that don’t taste of nothing?

Are you sure you didn’t buy reduced salt and sugar by mistake. I did that & took ages to work out what was wrong, they were rubbish. The normal ones aren’t as good as they used to be, but not as bad as that.

lottielady · 02/03/2019 10:55

Nope - I checked, because that was my first thought.

They do a normal version & a reduced salt and sugar one. Maybe you purchased the reduced ones by mistake?

Could try the Branson ones?

Heinz beans are awful anyway.

Branston every time!

lottielady · 02/03/2019 10:58

Are the Branston ones any good? Might give them a try...

PrivateIsles · 02/03/2019 10:59

Yes they're rubbish. Branston are good. Wattie's, in NZ, taste like old Heinz beans imo - appreciate it's a bit far to go though Grin

JiltedJohnsJulie · 02/03/2019 11:01

It looks like they changed the recipe back in 2006. Could it be that you simply haven't had any since then?

Branson's are much nicer btw Smile

lottielady · 02/03/2019 11:01

Hmm...DP used to live in NZ, I’ll ask him.

All he ever mentions is that everything had beetroot in it, and there were Turkish Delight choc ices.

I think they've reduced the sugar and salt in a lot of products for health reasons. Tesco own brand beans (not the value ones) are pretty decent. Try a dollop of mayo on the Heinz ones to perk them up!

lottielady · 02/03/2019 11:02

2006? Blooming Nora, maybe it is my tastebuds then.

Mayo on beans? Seems a bit avant-garde...

Turkish Delight choc ices
Yes - Jelly Tips! V nice too.

lottielady · 02/03/2019 11:06

Jelly Tips?

I’m going to text him that and see what he says.

We moved to Branston's beans because Heinz was too sweet, they are so much tastier.

MillytantForceit · 02/03/2019 11:08

Tesco Beans, made in Italy, are very good.

ScreamingValenta · 02/03/2019 11:11

Mayo on beans is great - the flavours and texture of the two contrast beautifully.

lottielady · 02/03/2019 11:15

I’m so going to try that.

Crinkle77 · 02/03/2019 11:16

They've reduced the sugar and salt content in loads of products so they now taste rubbish. Vimto and Ribena taste nothing like they used to and don't get me started on chicken and mushroom pot noodle. I have to stick a load of extra dog sauce in just to give it any flavour.

Crinkle77 · 02/03/2019 11:17

Aarrgghh stupid autocorrect. Should say soy sauce.

xsquared · 02/03/2019 11:18

I agree with others that Branston is far superior. Heinz beans do taste more watery than they used to.

lottielady · 02/03/2019 11:22

YY to chicken and mushroom Not Foodle.

I loved them when I was a student, four million years ago.

I tried one for nostalgia’s sake a while back...well, there was a lesson learned.

You can never go back.

Could be Grin

lottielady · 02/03/2019 11:26

So it’s not just my eyes, ears, tummy, thighs and arse that have gone to the dogs.

And I can’t even have a tin of beans or a Not Foodle to console myself.

OP posts:
Crinkle77 · 02/03/2019 11:32

@lottielady they do taste ok with a shot load of extra soy sauce. The little sachet you get with it is not enough

lottielady · 02/03/2019 11:33

That little sachet is fairly pathetic
