I can’t tolerate alcohol any more

TheFrogsLegs · 02/03/2019 08:49

I am now in my fifties - I very rarely drink alcohol any more, but every now and then forget why that is.

Last night I went wild, and had one drink - very edgy, an advocat and lemonade. Grin

Up twice to pee, very busy random dreams so I felt I didn’t sleep, then awake before 7am on a Saturday.

It’s really not on! Anyone else?

I'm on keto so anything more than a half glass hits me like a train!

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 02/03/2019 08:52

advocaat and lemonade...what a riot!!

I think alcohol is a bit of a hobby, tbh, if you don't keep at it, you do lose the skills :o

I find too much wine is not as nice as I want it to be, especially white wine, I rarely drink that anymore
A couple of glasses of red over an evening, or a whisky after a late meal.

...sort of pacing myself theses days.

TheFrogsLegs · 02/03/2019 08:54

Oh I used to love wine - can’t tolerate it at all now.

Advocat and lemonade? . Booze doesn't really agree with me any more either. Wine gives me acid reflux and booze in general makes me sleep badly and feel anxious.

mydogisthebest · 02/03/2019 08:55

I get migraines, bad ones, so don't risk alcohol. Alcohol free wine and lager taste good, often you can't taste the difference.

LittleCandle · 02/03/2019 08:56

When I drink, I go bright red up my neck and face. TBF, I rarely drink anyway, so I just suck it up. It used to happen to DM, too.

WobblyLondoner · 02/03/2019 08:59

I could have written this post. I bottle of lager last night with a meal out - woke at 5am feeling queasy, still feel wretched.

I think you quickly get used to it again - I drink a lot more over Xmas, and don't usually feel this bad. But I rarely drink in the week and will often not at the weekends either.

If my teenage self had know what I'd be like now she'd be wildly rolling her eyes!

Birdsgottafly · 02/03/2019 09:06

I tell everyone to make the most of your thirties and then don't waste your 40's, because a lot changes, particularly for Women after 50.

I can see the difference in my face, when I drink. I look a bit shit for days.

Birdsgottafly · 02/03/2019 09:09

mydogisthebest, what Wine do you find OK?

I thought Sainsbury's red was drinkable and there's a sparkly white that Tesco do at Christmas.

I'd love some recommendations.

damekindness · 02/03/2019 09:11

Yes this has happened to me (late 50s) as well. I was never a massive drinker but I did enjoy a big glass wine on the odd evening to unwind from work. I just started getting a massive headache not long after a drink and if not immediately by the next day. I didn't give up alcohol it gave me up. I REALLY miss the quick fix unwinding effect it has though.

LizzieSiddal · 02/03/2019 09:13

Have you tried gin?

I was the same as you, ive never drunk very much but used to live a glass of wine at the weekend. It seems now that even if I sniff wine, I feel drunk.

I tried gin last year and I can drink one of them and be fine. Apparently it’s because it’s a spirit, so doesn’t cause lots of side effects. I can only have one though or I’m asleep.Grin

LizzieSiddal · 02/03/2019 09:14

I’m early 50s by the way.

TheFrogsLegs · 02/03/2019 09:15

I’m early 50s too - and so my wild days are gone Grin

I resent my lovely Grandma used to just have a small whisky or Sherry and she’d say that was just enough for her.
We’re all heading that way.Grin

LizzieSiddal · 02/03/2019 09:49

*remember!

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 02/03/2019 09:52

The anxiety thing is a recent one for me
Not every time I drink so it’s like playing Russian roulette
Half a bottle with a meal last week
No problem
2 glasses with dinner last night and half the night fretting and anxious and twitchy
Think wine and me are going to have go our separate ways Sad

TheQueef · 02/03/2019 09:53

I used to be brilliant at drinking, at my Ddads retirement party I started at 11am and drank through til 2am.
Always giggly and happy, never shit faced.

Now if I have a single gin I have a two day hangover, throw up and get grumpy.
Alcohol is ruined for me.

ineedaknittedhat · 02/03/2019 10:09

I get very itchy if I have alcohol. My gp thinks it might be an allergic reaction, but I have problems with my liver as I was very itchy during my pregnancies as well. Anyway, I have to avoid it.

LarkDescending · 02/03/2019 10:25

Me too OP! In my case I was ill for a couple of years and lost any desire to drink during treatment, but subsequently haven’t been able to restart. I adventurously had one small glass of wine on Christmas Eve and it made me feel so horrendous afterwards (night sweats, nausea, dreadful nightmares) that the Christmas Day festivities almost had to be cancelled.

Tried a small bottle of 4% lager in January. Same thing.

I used to be quite the wine buff. Oh well!

Hippywannabe · 02/03/2019 10:29

Me too! Since having my gallbladder out, if I have alcohol, I wake up in the night and can't sleep. I even get a headache and I have never had a hangover. I am 54.

LarkDescending · 02/03/2019 10:33

I should have said - I am 50. Is this a thing that happens? Nobody warned me!

RoseMartha · 02/03/2019 10:38

I cant drink it as about ten years ago it started giving me D and V. It is so severe I can not tolerate it in gravy etc. And will kick in about half an hour after consuming it and last about six hours.
I never drunk a lot in the first place just liked the occasional glass of wine if i was out for dinner which was about once a month.

RoseMartha · 02/03/2019 10:40

Just to add i was in my early 30's when this started.

doctorboo · 02/03/2019 11:41

One small 4% bottle of cider, oh the hangover. After much research I can only tolerate one glass of organic red wine from Aldi. Not what I thought would happen in my mid thirties!!

VioletCharlotte · 02/03/2019 11:42

I'm exactly the same. I'm 43 and for the last year have been unable to tolerate alcohol. Even one H&M makes me feel awful - dizzy, sweaty, headache, up to pee all night. It's rubbish isn't it?!
