Gaaaaaah!

For the second time in nearly 17 years, I've forgotten my 'phone.

I've left it at college after an evening class.

The tutor locked up after we left, the phone is locked with an eight digit PIN and it's old and tatty.

I've sent him an email about it just now.

It's everything to me now; camera, alarm clock, calendar reminder, map, reference library, emails - everything.

Sod's Law says I am off on a wee break for a few days, starting at 4am tomorrow morning and not coming back until Sunday.

The soonest I pick up my phone will be Monday. If it's not been nicked in the meantime.

The first thing I had to do was log into my emails and realised that the PIN to collect my Virgin train tickets required pen and paper so I can travel tomorrow.

I can honestly say this will be he longest five days of my life.

I will also have to buy a cheap travel alarm clock, bring my digital camera and charger, I will have to find a bank to transfer money (instead of using the phone app), bring an A-Z and remember to bring a notepad and pen/pencil to make notes.

Gaaaaaaaaaaah!

How did I manage to do this???

The second time since 2002.

I am not bringing my laptop. I'll be bringing enough hardware with me without this thing.

In case anyone is wondering.

I get paid tomorrow, so can't transfer funds until then.

And Fitbit.

I can't log my food and drink intake.

Just tried to get the keysafe PIN code for the Airbnb place I'm renting.

Airbnb won't let me reset my password as it doesn't recognise my laptop.

I've sent a request for help, but it could take days for them to get back to me!!!??

Fuck my bloody life.

OP posts:
WTFIsAGleepglorp · 27/02/2019 23:56

I could cry.

Airbnb won't recognise my laptop and I can't contact the host as I don't have a phone.

Jesus.

Oh noooo!! Nightmare Shock

TanteRose · 28/02/2019 00:01

Any way you could postpone the trip and get your phone tomorrow?

TanteRose · 28/02/2019 00:02

And it's weird that you can't use your laptop? Surely most people log into the same site from various devices- I know I do

MyKingdomForBrie · 28/02/2019 00:08

I left something urgent in school once and there was a night contact who opened up and got it for me..

But I have to say I would postpone departure if at all possible and retrieve it if you can't access your emails another way. The other stuff is all fine but your accommodation is kind of vital! Who are you travelling with? Could they call Airbnb customer service, if there is such a thing?

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 28/02/2019 00:08

Yup.

I've booked an Advance ticket so I have to go tomorrow or else pay an absolute fortune.

I have also booked and paid for activities I don't want to miss.

I have also lost the charging cable to my phone.

So no pictures.

I really, really could cry now. Sad

NoSquirrels · 28/02/2019 00:12

Oh god - nightmare!

Later flight/train/coach?

As PP says - all the rest is just inconvenient but the accommodation is pretty vital.

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 28/02/2019 00:13

Camera

I've lost the charging cable to my camera. Sad

NoSquirrels · 28/02/2019 00:14

Well - you can go and just try and wing it? Buy a new cheap as possible PAYG phone on the way, and keep trying Air BnB? Beg the neighbours when you're standing outside...

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 28/02/2019 00:14

I have the host's phone number which I can use a payphone to contact tomorrow morning.

As she lives next door, it might not be a problem....

OP posts:
NoSquirrels · 28/02/2019 00:16

Oh in that case you can just do that. Are you flying? Airport shops for a PAYG phone, or when you get there?

PointlessUsername · 28/02/2019 00:16

Poor you op Flowers

Is there another way to get the tickets?

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 28/02/2019 00:30

I can get the tickets - I can log into my emails via my laptop, but can't log into Airbnb.

Got everything I need except the bloody PIN for the keysafe.

You'll have to think of it as an adventure from the olden days Grin
Involuntary digital detox

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 28/02/2019 00:42

I will be carrying an A-Z.

Like a tourist!!!

Holy! Fucking! Christ!

If ever there was a day I needed that fucking phone, it was today!!!!

I got to London by 7am, plenty of time for the 10.30 workshop.

Trying to find a working pay phone was a struggle in itself. I was literally blowing cobwebs off one.

After losing over a tenner, trying to get it through to the world's thickest customer services assistants that I had no phone or email, so I couldn't respond to the sms messages they sent to confirm my account, the money ran out.

I also called and left messages on the host's voicemail.

After cracking another tenner, I finally got through to her.

She's in Dubai. I got the PIN code for the lock on the keysafe, dumped my stuff and was 15 minutes late.

Incidentally, why are all the payphones in noisy areas? Busy junctions, under tannoy speakers and in open boxes?

When I got back to empty my case and was able to investigate, I realised the 'studio' was a crummy, poorly converted single bedroom.

The house looks like a HMO, with each 'studio' or 'flat' with its own electricity supply, but with heating and hot water supplied by a freeholder.

The fridge had been switch off and the door closed, so it was swimming with mould and dirty water.

There's rust all around the frame so the seal doesn't work and the bulb has lost the little cover and so is exposed and live.

There's dirt and marks in the wall, a thick plug of hair in the shower drain and another nice touch, a hotplate instead of a draining board.

How no one has been electrocuted before now is beyond me.

There's half a toilet roll, one bottle of bleach under the sink, a pan scourer on the bathroom floor and one tea towel.

And no hot water.

No heat and no hot water.

When I went out to buy cleaning supplies and after telling her about the state of the place, I told yer wan and she dumbly told me "There's always been hot water!"

Well, not today honey!!

Airbnb still won't allow me to log into the website and I am stuck!!

What the fuck do I do?

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 28/02/2019 19:00

I lied, btw.

I ended up bringing my laptop.

Fat lot of use it is in the fight against Airbnb.

And my phone has been found and is in a safe place.

ChesterGreySideboard · 28/02/2019 19:00

Without sounding facetious how are you posting this?

Can you log on to your iCloud account, assuming you have an iPhone?

ChesterGreySideboard · 28/02/2019 19:01

Cross post, you have your laptop.

This makes you realise how much we rely on our phones.

SleepingIsOverrated · 28/02/2019 19:08

OP this isn't much help but reading your posts makes me stressed on your behalf Confused I'm so sorry you're having such a shitty time!

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 28/02/2019 19:15

The dippy bint switched the heat off in the main flat.

She owns a two bedroomed flat on the second floor and has just emailed me with instructions to collect the key from the lock box and turn the thermostat up.

I'll wait and see what happens.

It's just a perfect storm.

Absent in another country, me without my phone and transactions occurring through an American website which is reliant on phones and internet access.

OP posts:
WTFIsAGleepglorp · 28/02/2019 20:08

Checked the boiler in the main flat after a bunch of emails to-ing and fro-ing.

Bar pressure was low and the boiler had stopped.

I repressurised the line and relit the pilot light.

still cold, but the water is coming through hot.

Panic over.
