Does this meal sound nice? Or weird?

Cooking a nice dinner for special occasion tonight

Roasted pork belly slices
Creamy lightly garlic mashed potato
Balsamic and oil roasted tender-stem broccoli
Homemade apple sauce

I don't cook stuff like this ever. I think it's more the broccoli I'm worrying about, was going to just make normal roast but thought something different could be nice and stumbled across that recipe. Also not sure if with everything else going on should make normal mash rather than garlic? Belly pork is still roasting for another hour and a half.. but I'm stressing over everything else!!

Can the broccoli just be broccoli?

It's not weird as much as everything doesn't need to be something. (If that makes sense!!)

Mumbunsandhuns · 23/02/2019 17:51

Sounds lovely to me! Love balsamic. Sometimes I put almonds with broccoli too

BifsWif · 23/02/2019 17:53

Oooh that sounds lovely!

I'd leave the broccoli plain but perhaps do the balsamic dressing seperate for people to add?
I absolutely love belly pork, one of my favourites.

CheddarAndCrackers · 23/02/2019 17:54

Pork belly for a special dinner? Hmm

It's a nice combo (if you like pork) otherwise but not really special, it's more a midweek meal.

LosingNemo · 23/02/2019 17:55

I think it sounds amazing. Can I come for tea please?

Habbs · 23/02/2019 17:55

@CheddarAndCrackers Sorry we aren't all Jamie Oliver! Pork belly is something we only ever have in restaurants, so for us it's special. No need to judge

Sounds lovely to me!

Shockers · 23/02/2019 17:56

I’ve seen pork belly on menus in really nice restaurants!

babysharkah · 23/02/2019 17:57

I associate pork belly slices with Chinese food. How are you roasting them - just plain?

I think it sounds ok - if it was roast pork belly like a Sunday roast it would be fine.

KnockMeDown · 23/02/2019 17:57

Sounds delicious to me. I think I might try broccoli like that. How long do you roast it for?

ginghambox · 23/02/2019 17:57

Why spoil te mash by putting fucking garlic in it.

DramaAlpaca · 23/02/2019 17:57

That sounds delicious but like others have said I'd leave the broccoli plain & have the dressing separate.

ShowOfHands · 23/02/2019 17:58

Not weird in the slightest. A totally normal meal.

CheddarAndCrackers · 23/02/2019 17:58

No need to judge

Only answering YOUR question, sweetheart! If you won't like the answers don't ask the question. Hmm

Wenttoseainasieve · 23/02/2019 17:59

Nooo don't leave the broccoli plain! All sounds good minus the pork which I don't eat. If I did eat pork, the whole meal would be great. Who cares if it's fancy/a midweek meal/whatever. It sounds tasty!

IHaveBrilloHair · 23/02/2019 18:00

Any cut of meat/type of food can be special if you cook it nicely.
Lots of the cheaper cuts are getting more expensive as good chefs are using them in their restaurants.

Habbs · 23/02/2019 18:01

@CheddarAndCrackers I was more asking whether to do the broccoli with balsamic / whether to leave the mash plain if you read the op, not to be told the nice meal I'm trying to make for someone sounds bog standard!

Sounds lovely OP. I think the balsamic will cut through the fat of the pork belly and go really well. What time should I be there? Love pork belly. And is a special meal here too. Not cost wise but as it’s so fatty! Can’t have it too often.

TheGreatestShoeman · 23/02/2019 18:02

Sounds absolutely delicious as you've planned, would be a lovely meal for us too op. Wish someone would cook that for me!

reindeermania · 23/02/2019 18:02

Sounds beautiful to me. A posh restaurant around the corner from me serves belly pork with mash and balsamic sauce- it's a £28 option- certainly not a midweek option!

I'd keep the broccoli balsamic as I think it's work perfectly

Habbs · 23/02/2019 18:03

@babysharkah I'm a bit clueless I never cook stuff like this, I just rubbed salt and pepper into it and slow roasted for a few hours as per a recipe I found on google.

ApolloandDaphne · 23/02/2019 18:03

I think it all sounds lovely and i would adore the balsamic broccoli and the garlic mash.

PickAChew · 23/02/2019 18:04

Sounds lovely, but needs gravy!

Habbs · 23/02/2019 18:05

Thanks for all the advice, I know I'm getting a bit carried away trying to make everything 'something' but I'm pregnant and haven't ate anything other than junk for months Blushbeen wanting a fancy restaurant meal but tight budget this month so thought I'd make it at home. I'm embarrassingly excited over it.
