How much do you spend food shopping and how frequently?

We spend about £70 a week on two of us, which to me just seems ridiculous. We shop at Lidl so I struggle to shop for a two week period as none of the fruit or veg lasts long and I end up spending loads on top up shops. Spoke to DH this morning about how I want to get it down to £50 a week while it's still just us two (expecting a little boy in July) but he claims this is impossible.

We’re 2 adults, 4 DC & a dog
I have a separate ‘groceries’ account that gets £105 per week sent over by SO, sometimes we use it all, sometimes we carry £10/£20 over, it depends whether we need toiletries that week really
I shop every 8/10 days

£70 for 2 people per week sounds like a lot to me

SauvignonMum · 23/02/2019 10:59

Family of 5.
I'd say £120 pw

Nobhobs · 23/02/2019 11:15

That's what I thought! Going to trawl through the receipts and see where I can make some cuts.

Approximately 60 per week sometimes more, sometimes less, family of 4.

JourneyToThePlacentaOfTheEarth · 23/02/2019 11:18

£100pw approx for family of 5, mostly at Aldi but also bits from Tesco and Iceland

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 23/02/2019 11:18

Two of us, shopping in Aldi, averaging about £45 per week, but with top ups, probably another £10-15.

LBOCS2 · 23/02/2019 11:20

I've done £110 this week which was food for all meals for 5 (including a preteen boy), snacks, treats, cat food and a bottle of wine. I didn't think that was too bad - and I still have a full fridge.

YahBasic · 23/02/2019 11:20

Between 50 & 80 at Sainsbury’s for 2 adults & 2 cats.

We can obviously cut that down if we shopped at Aldi/Lidl, but there isn’t one close and I can walk to Sainsbury’s.

user1487194234 · 23/02/2019 11:23

£150 a week 2 adults,2 teen.That is for everything.Kids eat masses

ContadoraExplorer · 23/02/2019 11:24

On average about £30-£35/week at Aldi for two adults but that's just breakfast and dinner. We probably spend a further £20 each on food for work (although that can increase to £30 if we treat myself to a fancier lunch). Impending mat leave means I should probably be better prepared and make our lunches too but so far I'm rubbish at remembering!

CookPassBabtridge · 23/02/2019 11:24

£120 a week for 2 adults, 2 small kids and a cat. That's buying cheap brands!

BerensteinBear · 23/02/2019 11:26

Probably around £170 ish pw.
2 adults, 1 DS (sn so will only eat/drink certain things and brands)
More when DD is home from school (boarder)
Plus Ddog who is on vet food (allergies)

I cook from scratch most nights.
Food shopping is getting more & more expensive.

Jinglejanglefish · 23/02/2019 11:26

Around £50 a week at Aldi for me and dp, then about £15 on formula for dd and veg that Aldi doesn’t do at either Sainsbury’s or Waitrose. Then probably 10-15 on wine. Then occasional top ups. We don’t quite do a weekly shop, usually it’s more like 8-9 days and I use all the fresh stuff first then other stuff towards the end.

savingmysanity · 23/02/2019 11:27

we just got back from aldi, did a months worth of food for 2 of us (not including little top ups for things like fresh veg) for £80, DH eats lunch at home every day and I take a packed lunch. We dont buy booze with our monthly shop

TescoValue · 23/02/2019 11:28

£70 every two weeks, then in-between a £20 or so top up shop for eggs/milk/bread. Our veg lasts 2 weeks in our fridge and we shop at Tesco, there's 2 adults and a toddler.

hidinginthenightgarden · 23/02/2019 11:29

£60 a week at supermarket and another £15 on fruit.

Nobhobs · 23/02/2019 12:17

Gone through a bunch of old receipts and today's. We're spending on average £20 a week on meat Shock I blame DH and his steaks that are £7.89 a pop!

On average per week
£20.50 on meat
£7.50 on pasta, rices, tinned veg and sauces
£2.50 on treats such as biscuits, cakes, puddings
£12 on fresh fruit and veg
£7.30 on household hygiene.. toothpastes, shampoos, deodorants, loo rolls, bin bags etc
£2.80 on drinks
£15.50 on fresh products like milk, eggs, bread, yoghurts, potatoes

Going to try and come up with a meal plan that uses less.

I can do my family of 6 on £50 a week if I absolutely have to. It’s no fun and there’s not a huge amount of snacking but it’s possible.

I spent £90 in Aldi this morning. That included pull ups for DD who isn’t dry at night, packed lunch food for 3 for a week, dinners, snacks and refilling my Brexit stash stocking up the cupboards and freezer a bit. I normally shop on Thursdays but stretched it this week as it’s half term and I didn’t want to drag all the kids.

I’ll go again this coming Thursday and probably spend about £40 for the following 7 days as I’ll have plenty left from this lot.

On average we’ve spent £100 a week this year but £20 a week or so has been stockpiling. It’s usually between £70 and £80 to feed two adults, two teenagers and two primary age kids.

DistressedAndWorried7845 · 23/02/2019 12:24

Probably about £140 a week

2 adults, 2 toddlers, 6 cats

MaryBoBary · 23/02/2019 12:27

None of that sounds excessive OP. We are 2 adults and 1 3yo. We spend about £70 per week on all food, cleaning products, toiletries, cat food and litter. I shop in Aldi. We don’t have steak often, it is a special treat, and I cook from scratch about 5 nights per week. Extras for my son is probably only £5 (snacks and yoghurts).

dancemom · 23/02/2019 12:30

I also shop at Lidl, I spend about £40-£50 a week with an additional top up of about £15 I'd say. I spend A LOT on fruit and veg though, about £15 of that is fruit alone.

isseywithcats · 23/02/2019 12:42

An Aldi shopper here i go once a fortnight and generally spend between £110 and £140 a fortnight , that's two adults and four cats everything from treats and food to cleaning stuff, i tend to buy fresh veg for the first week and frozen veg for the second week , only top ups we seem to do are bread milk and butter from Asda about £3 a week

RJnomore1 · 23/02/2019 12:44

Oh god threads like this always embarrass me.

There's me dh and 14yo dd at home and we are on average £900 per calendar month. Does include the cleaning and laundry items though.

I know we could and probably should be less. Much less.

Turquoisetamborine · 23/02/2019 12:47

Ours crept up to £80pw as I’d started getting Tesco deliveries for convenience but we need to pull it back so I ditched Tesco this month. A new Lidl has just opened half a mile away so I’ve been getting almost everything there this month and it’s been about £60 a week for two adults and two kids.
I’ve set a budget for £70 pw this month but that includes lunch boxes and we both take lunches to work too. We probably buy one bottle of wine a week out of that. Don’t know how people can afford to drink more!

Japril · 23/02/2019 12:48

I have started a health kick recently and so the food bill is quite high whilst I buy all the random spices and things that the recipes need but for 2 adults and 2 kids we easily spend £140 a week, sometimes more. That is not including alcohol, cleaning products, or toiletries. Shock. I really need to cut back!
