How much do you spend food shopping and how frequently?

We spend about £70 a week on two of us, which to me just seems ridiculous. We shop at Lidl so I struggle to shop for a two week period as none of the fruit or veg lasts long and I end up spending loads on top up shops. Spoke to DH this morning about how I want to get it down to £50 a week while it's still just us two (expecting a little boy in July) but he claims this is impossible.

Just over £100 for 4 (used to easily be below, but prices are creeping up) which includes 2 teenagers who eat as much as adults.
We have meat free days at least once and generally twice a week.

CaptainJaneway62 · 23/02/2019 12:55

I invested in another freezer so that I could freeze fresh food and meat/fish when it was on offer. I also use more frozen veg now.
It cut my bill by more than 50% as I was then able to freeze more stuff including fresh milk and butter.
I batch cook with fresh ingredients then freeze.
So now I only shop every 2 weeks.

We shop at Sainsbury’s and feed two adults on £35-40 per week. That includes breakfast lunch and dinner every day. We hardly ever eat out and if we top up with treats we buy it with our own money not joint funds. We are saving money for a family (I’m 14 w pg) and we have debts to pay, otherwise we’d definitely spend more like £50 per week.
It’s definitely the meat that pushes up the price as we buy max of two meat dishes per week, often one. We eat really really well, we just buy non branded products and Sainsbury’s basics.
If we want meat we’ll buy a whole chicken for £4.50 and it’ll last 2-3 meals or mince for £5 and it’ll last two meals again.
If DH likes steak could you look at buying wholesale like costco where you get a lot more for the money? Then you could freeze it. Supermarkets are expensive for meat, especially steak!

CakeNinja · 23/02/2019 12:56

Family of 5, (2 adults, 2 teens with adult appetites, 1 7 year old also with a healthy appetite) about £200 a week.
That doesn’t include lunches out/takeaways/dinner out which varies from one week to the next and could be nothing or lots.

Kelsoooo · 23/02/2019 13:16

3 adults and 2 kids.

Shop online at Tesco.

£70 a week average for everything.

I meal plan, and buy what I need for that, then extras biscuits, yoghurts etc.

Cupboards never empty, always food and snacks, and can usually deviate off list (say it's baked eggs, switch that for pesto pasta)

We don't eat fresh meat every night. But we eat well, varied and seriously tasty food.

LaurieFairyCake · 23/02/2019 13:27

£130-£150 - for 2 adults only. Largely vegetarian/vegan food, no alcohol but fuck tons of very expensive juices.

Pretamum · 23/02/2019 13:30

It's 2 adults and 1 child in our house, we probably spend between £70-100 a week depending on whether we need toiletries/cleaning products/washing powder etc... That sometimes includes wine and treats but as we're trying to lose weight we don't generally throw treats in the trolley at the moment. We could definitely reduce this if we didn't cook from scratch most nights or cut down on meat - sometimes we have several meat free meals a week which brings the cost down. I also make a point of cooking bigger portions of dinners like chilli / bolognese / curry and freeze some so that on weeks when we need to cut down costs we've always got a few dinners in the freezer.

Roomba · 23/02/2019 13:31

About £40 a week on average just on food for me, a teenager who eats a lot and a six year old. Usually shop at Aldi but buy lots of fruit and veg v cheap at the market too.

Nobhobs · 23/02/2019 13:37

We both have lunch at home everyday rather than eating at work so £70 per week covers breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks and puddings. DH is insistent that's pretty good but it just feels excessive. Nothing (except his steaks) sees too excessive it just all adds up to a bit too much so not sure where to make cuts. I'd be happy to eat vegetarian a few times a week but DH doesn't think any meal is complete without meat Hmm

I could have written your post OP! Except we're saving while still TTC. Shopping online is the answer!

We were spending 70 a week in Aldi/Lidl which seemed insane. I've started to shop online. I look at what we have in the freezer and plan meals for the week trying to use some of that stuff. Then I go through adding what else I need to make the meals on the mySupermarket app. It suggests swaps to bring the price down which massively helps and it avoids the 'oh shit!' At the checkout! So far we have brought it down to around the 50 mark. I'm a veggie though so my meat eating dp definitely doesn't eat as much meat as he would because I'm not making two dinners every night!

When we worked it out it was all the little 'ooh that looks nice' items we were picking up in the supermarket that we didn't need that was pushing the price up.

showmethegin · 23/02/2019 13:40

Also if I notice any veggies ie broccoli in our fridge are about to turn I blanch and freeze, our food waste has gone right down. I think 50 is the cheapest we could do it because we eat loads of fresh fruit.

SheldonSaysSo · 23/02/2019 13:43

We spend around £60 for two adults in Lidl/Aldi. I sometimes use Sainsburys if I can get money off or triple nectar points, but have to be careful as Sainsburys is more expensive.

I would say £70 isn't too bad, although that's not to say it can't be a bit lower. Maybe look at reducing any 'treats' you buy and trying to things that work for more than one meal (Roast on a Sunday, leftover meat for lunches in the week or an omelette etc). I also keep a rough tally as I shop and will change some meals if its looking expensive by buying items on special offer.

Choud1616 · 23/02/2019 13:47

Family of 4, £80-100 per week, split into 2 shops per week.

LightAsTheBreeze · 23/02/2019 13:55

About £100 - £120 week for 2 adults, made up of weekly Tesco online shop and top up shops and treats from Waitrose and M&S. We don’t budget too much though as DS is adult and left home and life is too short for cheap food. If I spot my favourite stuff on offer I stock up on it though.

CaseofEllen · 23/02/2019 13:59

£50/£55 a week for two adults and our dog. Always have basic stuff leftover in cupboards when the next weekly shop comes around.

Micom · 23/02/2019 13:59

Only shop once a month for two adults in tesco normally around the £350 mark Inc dog food.

BitchQueen90 · 23/02/2019 14:01

Between £40 and £50 pw for me and one DS. DS is 5 so currently on free school meals, it will likely increase when he's not.

babycakes1010 · 23/02/2019 14:04

55-60 a week for 2 adults 3dc

Lungelady · 23/02/2019 14:09

2 adults about £120 a week. We eat out twice a week. That includes dh's pack ups and wine/toiletries erc.

wendz86 · 23/02/2019 14:10

Myself and two children . Weekly shop of around £50 and then prob topup at weekend around £20.

Mumshappy · 23/02/2019 14:21

Me dd15 dd8 and ds10 months. About 60 - 70 a week including all toiletries, cleaning products and baby stuff except formula. Mainly from aldi but buy some branded stuff from elsewhere. Dd15 is vegetarian so I either make veg dishes for all or she will have an alternative.

PurplePepperEater · 23/02/2019 14:54

Wowsers RJnomore what are you eating? Shock

melissasummerfield · 23/02/2019 16:05

I can never understand how people on these threads are shopping for 5 people for £60!

I spend about £120 a week for 2 adults and 3 under 6 dc, have really tried to get it down but its impossible, i spend approx £25 a week on fruit and veg alone and at least another £10 - £15 on dairy produce!

I cook everything from scratch except a few boxes of fishfingers and some oven chips and we really dont waste barely anything, maybe a few manky carrots at the end of the week get binned.

The only change i could make is switching from tesco to aldi but i find the quality of the fresh stuff is reflected in the price so it not worth it, especially with the added hassle of actually walking around the shop Blush

Mumshappy · 23/02/2019 16:11

melissasummerfield i find that Tesco is the most expensive supermarket.

Youmadorwhat · 23/02/2019 16:13

@melissasummerfield I find tesco very expensive tbh asi said we average 60for 2 adults and two Dc. We shop mostly in lidl. I bulk but cleaning products. No nappies or wipes anymore so that makes a difference
