How much do you spend food shopping and how frequently?

We spend about £70 a week on two of us, which to me just seems ridiculous. We shop at Lidl so I struggle to shop for a two week period as none of the fruit or veg lasts long and I end up spending loads on top up shops. Spoke to DH this morning about how I want to get it down to £50 a week while it's still just us two (expecting a little boy in July) but he claims this is impossible.

We spend between £80-£120 a week for two adults and three kids, two of whom have packed lunches. I can and have brought it down but it’s horrible having to subsist on fried rice every day and having no treats.

We have a Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, Asda and Sainsbury’s within walking distance - when I was on maternity leave I’d walk round them all to get the best deals. That was 7 years ago, I don’t bother now.

Meat at Costco isn’t any cheaper, unless you’re talking about the chicken which I’ve found weirdly goes off very quickly. 3kg of mince was around £20 when I went today - I get a kg from Asda for about a fiver. No it’s not Aberdeen Angus but it suffices!

We are about £50 for 2 adults and a baby either from Sainsbury's or Aldi.
We also have a Costco shop every 8 weeks of approx £80. Costco is good for bacon, sausages and chicken - I portion it up and freeze it. Also great for cleaning products I think we buy dishwasher tablets every 6 months same with bleach!

Most of our shop is veg and we have many vegetarian meals during the week, DH will cook a piece of meat in the slow cooker such as pulled pork, gammon or beef which usually does us for several meals during the week.

There are quite a few recipes where you can reduce the meat by adding lentils and curries etc can easily be veggie.

How much time do you have? I don’t have loyalty to any one shop. But I do have the time to visit more than one shop a week. I also drive quite a distance to visit a huge market and Chinese food shop about every three weeks.

I don’t meal plan rigorously I see what’s on offer. Spend about 75 to 100 a week. Two adults and a huge teen who eats a lot plus his GF comes over for dinner twice a week. He goes to hers once a week.

£100p/w for four of us, but the two children are 4 yrs and 9 months, so I expect this to go up somewhat as they get older. I'm sure food prices have increased in the last five years. I shop at Morrison's, buy lots of fruit and veg, very little meat.

@Mumshappy, @OhtheRoses said she shops at Waitrose. They actually have really good 3 for £10 deals on meat and fish so that may not be costing her too much. Then again she could be buying their Duchy level so I’m not sure.

About 120 a week for 6 of us. I dont know how people do it for 60 with a big family?

I'd never spend much on mince anyway, DianaPrincess. It's mostly fat and connective tissue and recipes that use it reflect that - cooking slowly on a low temperature. I find the frozen stuff is more than adequate for chilli and Bolognese.

Family of 3 - DD eats adult portions (sporty teen).
I budget €700 a month for groceries, and over the course of the year that seems about right - although some months are well over.

I spend too much, it's just me and the cats. My Ocado order for the week is usually around £70 but that often includes something extra for the house/the cats/a make up item etc. and also all toiletries and cleaning products, bin liners and stuff. Then usually another £5-20 a week on small top up shops, lunch out, a take away delivery etc. I'm in the process of tidying up my diet and cutting out all junk and treat foods though so hopefully it will go down.

£60-70/w, two adults one toddler. Doesn't include nappies or wipes but all food, laundry and cleaning stuff plus occasional booze. I get it delivered. I used to go to either Lidl or Aldi but I would spend the same amount as I can't be trusted if I go in person as I end up deviating from the list. At least now I have the convenience of it turning up and I can amend/meal plan as I go until the night before from my phone.

80-100 per week for 2 adults, 1 toddler and 1 cat. Does feel like a lot especially as it's generally Asda, but includes all packed lunches for me and DP, alcohol, nappies/milk, household products and most toiletries. We do eat a lot of meat, but DP is dead set against cutting down on it! I'd happily switch to Aldi if they delivered...

Meralia · 25/02/2019 15:55

About 200 a week, including food, toiletries, nappies, cat food etc...
We’re a family of 5.

caperplips · 25/02/2019 16:14

I think we must spend loads as its often 150 per week for 2 adults and a young teen. But I am ok with that and we eat very very well and always have nice things to eat.
