How much do you spend food shopping and how frequently?

We spend about £70 a week on two of us, which to me just seems ridiculous. We shop at Lidl so I struggle to shop for a two week period as none of the fruit or veg lasts long and I end up spending loads on top up shops. Spoke to DH this morning about how I want to get it down to £50 a week while it's still just us two (expecting a little boy in July) but he claims this is impossible.

It's very easy to add about £30 to a weekly shopping bill by just popping into M&S for a few odd bits as I sometimes do.

OhTheRoses · 23/02/2019 17:13

We don't waste food either but I do admit we have a lot of convenience things I wouldn't have dreamt of when the dc were smaller but I regularly work 12 hour days now - out of the house at 7am and back at 9pm. DS and I are having a barbecue in a minute with nice meat, jackets and salad and a naice bean salad. Tomorrow we have roast chicken and leftovers will go in a pasta bake, will also make a chilli tomorrow, salmon fillets in the week and some lamb chops. Add fruit, salad stuff, some pre prepped veg, box of beers, tonic, cheese, milk, yoghurt, few toiletries, a pudding, butter, pasta etc (oh and cat food - the cat only eats the £1a tiny tin stuff - spoilt git) and that was £135. Sainsburys.

There is 2 of us and I go shopping every 2 weeks spending no more than £80

Megan2018 · 23/02/2019 17:22

Genuine question @PixieDust20
How do you keep food fresh for 2 weeks or don’t you eat salad/veg?

Myusernameismud · 23/02/2019 17:27

bedunk I'm just about to sit down and do a tesco order so I'll screenshot my basket once I'm done!

Micom · 23/02/2019 17:30

I do a once a month shop, veg especially root veg keeps good for a couple of weeks and premaking meals to go in the freezer if it's about to go bad and use lots of frozen veg near the end.

dottydally · 23/02/2019 17:31

We spend between £60-£80 a week for two adults. That includes all meals and packed lunches to take to work each day. Also includes toiletries, house/cleaning stuff and pet food!

Occasionally it goes up to £100 if we order alcohol or are having people over for dinner. It doesn't include takeaways though (maybe one a fortnight).

Mmmhmmokdear · 23/02/2019 17:48

2 adults (take own lunches to work), 2 primary age kids (one on packed lunches, one on UFSM) and an ancient cat.

I try to keep it to or under £100 per week. Sometimes I go a bit over as I get sucked into buying things that aren't on the list. If I order an online shop, I can do it easily.

LucyInTheSkyy · 23/02/2019 17:49

Maximum £100 per week for 2 adults, 3 dc, 2 cats & 1 dog.

£70-80 Lidl shop- strict meal plans but vary it up weekly, the rest I keep in cash for top ups of milk, bread, fruit and any extra ingredients needed for a particular recipe / baking.

I buy all veg frozen except for aubergine, courgette & corn in the cob; and bulk lasagne, Spag bol, cottage pies etc with lentils to last for 2 meals. Once you have the time to plan, it defo becomes doable.

Mmmhmmokdear · 23/02/2019 17:49

Forgot to say, I meal plan and plan for leftovers as well.

bobstersmum · 23/02/2019 17:51

Weekly shop is usually around 80. Two adults and 3 kids one is in nappies so that includes them and wipes. I usually spend up to another 20 on a top up as the week goes on. I alternate Asda, Aldi and Lidl.

Jsmith99 · 23/02/2019 17:52

£60-70 per week, excluding alcohol, for 2 of us. I like my food, DP is a very good cook and we don’t begrudge spending money on yummy food. Fortunately, we can afford not to worry about our food bill. We eat out at least once a week.

Bubba1234 · 23/02/2019 17:56

About 100 for 3 ppl

PastaSauceHoarder · 23/02/2019 17:59

Roughly £45 per week from Aldi for two adults and a toddler. Smile This includes a big pack of nappies and two packs of baby wipes each week.

We used to do an ASDA shop before switching and ended up spending £60ish each trip.

Mumshappy · 23/02/2019 18:03

PastaSauceHorder I also get a big pack of nappies and two of the four packs of wipes every week from aldi. Its less than 7.00 pounds for all of it. I couldnt believe how cheap it all was when I first went for baby stuff. The aldi nappies are great aren't they?

Hiddenaspie1973 · 23/02/2019 18:05

Average 50 pw. 2 adults, 1 12 y.o dd and a cat.
We shop at Lidl or Aldi depending.

MondeoFan · 23/02/2019 18:10

Spend £50 weekly for 2 adults 1 teenager 1 toddler Aldi
I go Tesco sometimes normally £80

WendyCope · 23/02/2019 18:19

80 euro a week me and DD (10) who eats double what I do. That is for absolutely everything/ cleaning products toothpaste/washing powder etc. I never go out, ever. So wine is included in this as are treats for DD.

7Euro is delivery, but I don't have a car and find it much easier and cheaper to shop weekly and meal plan. Everything is from scratch, no takeaways or ready meals where I live.

I do order what I want, I could probably save 20 euros if I was frugal.

No top ups.

Megan2018 · 23/02/2019 18:26

@Micom
I live on salad and fresh veg-we buy some frozen veg like peas but I couldn’t live without interesting salads at least 2-3 times a week in the warm months! I don’t cook with much veg, we don’t enjoy those sort of meals. Our favs are steak, fish or chicken with piles of salad or different veg but usually no potato. We’ll eat 2-3 heads of broccoli easily a week. Frozen broccoli is too soggy.

Micom · 23/02/2019 18:34

@Megan2018 we live a good hour and a half from tesco which is our nearest shop, so weekly shops are a thing of the past for me Sad I grow bits of rocket and stuff on the windowsill in summer though! Agree re frozen brocoli!

Biancadelrioisback · 23/02/2019 18:41

£40 in Lidl for 2 adults and toddler but I could easily get that down. I've been bulk buying each week so we have a stash

SpanielEars070 · 23/02/2019 18:44

4 adults here and I struggle to stay within £200 a week.

That works out at 21 meals a week for £50 each though.

Butteredghost · 23/02/2019 18:50

What a timely thread as I was just checking my banking app yesterday and was shocked to see we had an average of 30 grocery store transactions per month Shock. We normally do one big shop per week and a top up every 1-2 days.

We spend £120 a week for two adults and a baby. That includes all food including lunches as we both take packed lunch to work, baby stuff, cleaning products, alcohol and pet stuff.

It seems like a lot. We eat reasonably healthy but with a few treats. I cook from scratch usually but sometimes this adds to the cost I think. Things like lasagne, soup and biscuits can be bought ready made really cheaply, but I prefer to make my own as I enjoy cooking.

mendandmakedo · 23/02/2019 19:03

Family of 5 with grandad having dinner 5 nights per week. Spend approx 140 per week including top ups. Mainly shop at Aldi, local butchers and company shop for nhs workers which is great and free to join.

MumUnderTheMoon · 23/02/2019 19:11

There are two of us £70 is roughly what we spend but about once a month it can be as much as £100
