Or have I but they’re just too ashamed to admit it?

I move in pretty mixed circles when it comes to leave/remain. I voted leave but did change my mind several times before I voted. On balance I still would. Of the people I know who voted leave there were a variety of reasons. I certainly wouldn't't call them ill educated racists.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 21/02/2019 21:57

I'm a leaver. Most people I know are also leavers. Remainers scattered about.

Other than one crazy friend, there has been no problems. I was gutted when she deleted me off Facebook as her anti Brexit statuses were extremely amusing.

TheLastBusOutOfTown · 21/02/2019 22:43

I voted Remain and know very few leavers.

All of my friends are very anti-brexit. I assume this is because most people tend to be friends with those who share similar values (similarly I also count very few Tory voters amongst my friends).

All of my work colleagues voted Remain and are very vocal about it. This is not surprising given that I work for a European company and we all travel frequently within Europe.

The few leavers I know come from the impoverished Midlands town where I grew up. Without exception they are racists. I don't doubt that there are many non-racist leave voters, but unfortunately this is not my experience. It's an awful thing to have to admit that your parents are racists.

I was publicly attacked on Facebook by a triumphant leave voter (now a former friend) on the day after the vote. Told that I was a traitor and should be made to leave the country. Leavers are not necessarily the victims they try to present themselves as.

Imissgmichael · 21/02/2019 22:51

Ah yes those nasty thick uneducated racist old and probably northern people voting leave.

I don’t know any nice leave voters don’t ya know.

I’m so so liberal, certain people shouldn’t be able to vote don’t us ya know.

Same old same old.

AdoraBell · 21/02/2019 23:06

I’m married to one.

Davros · 22/02/2019 00:15

Research has put the cost of Brexit at between £57 billion and £64 billion so far. That's before factoring in the car factory closures and before Brexit has even happened!
If we stop HS2 now we will probably save nearly £100bn. At the moment the eventual cost is unknown. It's already out-of-date, badly thought out and many people don't even know much about it.

hellenbackagen · 22/02/2019 00:17

im a leaver. i believe dp may have been also but our jobs see the worst of what the EU has to offer.

we deal with people who come here to commit crime/fraud

i hope that would stop when we leave.

BrendasUmbrella · 22/02/2019 02:49

I just think of all of the cuts we have to make in our country and believe we could do so much better with the money than the EU do with it.

We could make better decisions with the money we already have. What makes you think any extra would be put to better use?

why100000 · 22/02/2019 06:28

I am a remainer and have encountered mainly remainers, and a smattering of leavers. Glad I live in a majority remain area, as it must be hard to feel like the odd one out in a sea of either leavers or remainers, depending on your position.

ivykaty44 · 22/02/2019 07:05

helenbackagain but boarder checks will be scrapped to avoid disruption in the case of a no deal Brexit - which will surely mean that anyone can come into the country freely

DippyAvocado · 22/02/2019 07:13

I just think of all of the cuts we have to make in our country and believe we could do so much better with the money than the EU do with it.

The trouble is, membership of the single market brings millions and millions to our economy, so it doesn't matter if the government makes much better use of the membership fees it saves (0.7%of our GDP!), there will still be a lot less money to go round.

Mumphineasandferbmadea · 22/02/2019 07:15

I live in the south east and know a mixture. I live on a council estate in a otherwise very posh area and both areas seem very mixed.

Bouchie · 22/02/2019 07:15

My FIL is one of the few leavers I know in real life. The penny has just dropped for him that we are more likely to get more immigrants from the rest of the world to fill in the spaces in the work force. He is not impressed. Hmm

bellinisurge · 22/02/2019 07:33

@hellenbackagen , you clearly have a tough job but it is rather naive to think that no one will commit fraud or other crimes after Brexit.

longwayoff · 22/02/2019 07:37

Hellen, so you are someone who consciously voted in the hope your job would become unnecessary? I fear you will be sorely disappointed.

YouBumder · 22/02/2019 07:50

I just think of all of the cuts we have to make in our country and believe we could do so much better with the money than the EU do with it.

Ah swallowing the right wing austerity narrative is strong in this one.

The government could already make things easier for the poor and vulnerable. They haven’t. Not because of the EU but because they don’t give a fuck about them.

Let’s see if this poor lady magically gets a home help on or after 30 March. I’m not a betting woman but I’d put a fiver that’ll be a no.

Sierra259 · 22/02/2019 07:56

I only know one person in my family/friends who voted leave. What annoys me most is when he tries to justify it, he just trots out all the Daily Fail/Express rhetoric about "taking back our sovereignity from unelected EU MP's/EU nationals clogging up our schools/housing and NHS" (I work in the NHS and we see far more non-EU patients). He cannot give ONE specific reason or example of how being in the EU has negatively affected him. He has no mortgage, a public sector pension from the days when they truly were gold plated and is sitting in a house with massive equity. Any negative fallout from Brexit probably won't touch him. And yet he has taken away opportunities for study and travel from my children and as parents of young DC with only average incomes, made our lives probably harder financially too.

Ironfloor269 · 22/02/2019 07:58

I'm ashamed to say that I know a few leavers. Racist extended family and racist neighbour.

Parker231 · 22/02/2019 08:06

I wasn’t entitled to vote but anyone saying they don’t know any leavers or remainers but lead a very insular life. It’s probably one of the reasons why the country is in such a mess - it’s good to mix with people with a range of opinions and views. It’s how you learn tolerance and different ideas. Voters from both sides obviously have their own reasons for voting as they have.

bellinisurge · 22/02/2019 08:11

I don't discuss politics with people I don't trust but I know a lot of people who voted differently to me. Everyone is pretty quiet about it in real life. Not just Leavers.

longwayoff · 22/02/2019 08:40

Yes, two irreconcilable views and nothing to be gained from discussion, only enmity aroused. Bloody hell, look at the state of politics. I'm despondent.

Megan2018 · 22/02/2019 09:51

It truly baffles me how some people only want to mix with people that think the same as they do.

My oldest friend is a staunch left wing socialist - I am a member of the Conservative party. We occasionally debate a few issues when pissed but we generally just accept that we disagree. We met when we were 8 years old, now 40/41 and we would never let our political opinions stop a friendship. She voted Remain. I voted Leave. We don't hate each other, we respect each other's point of view.

I have another close friend who is Scottish SNP, independence supporter - again we disagree on most things political but still doesn't mean we can be good friends who respect each others opinions.

All the Remainers who despise Leavers just for their views really need to give their heads a wobble and get some bloody perspective and learn the meaning of tolerance and respect!

RedWineIsFabulous · 22/02/2019 10:03

I’m a leaver. Know loads of leavers

This is really getting boring now

Believe it or not op there are 17.4 million of us....

Windowsareforcheaters · 22/02/2019 10:20

All the Remainers who despise Leavers just for their views

I fully accept that Remainers have called leavers thick and been unpleasant.

But leavers seem to forget the reverse is also true. Remainers have been called traitors and accused of treason. Leavers (some) have also been responsible for some extremely unpleasant racism.

The unpleasantness goes both ways and both sides need to remember that.

KatharinaRosalie · 22/02/2019 10:26

I know one. Well, knew. For some reason he took offence and deleted me off social media when he was posting about making Britan great again, and I asked if this means his parents are moving home from Spain then..
