Seems to be a lot of pre brexit stockpiling going on here. But none in real life Confused

I know a couple of people who are, like me.

It's very hard though.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 21/02/2019 09:02

One woman at Lidl last week literally couldn’t get anything more in her car. She’s clearly done a number of trips back and forth with the trolley.

To be fair, that could have been me on a regular week. I usually do a big shop at Lidl about every 8 to 9 days and have a very tiny car Smile

I’ve thought about it - just due to the frenzy on here to be honest - but having looked into it I’ve not seen warnings there will be food shortages apart from in fresh food which obviously can’t be stocked in advance. Food prices may well go up but I can’t see that food will be unavailable - none of the the major supermarkets have ever suggested that have they? I’m just unsure what people are prepping for to be honest

And, no I’m not a Leave voter I’m a hardcore remainer!

We really do need a secret MN sign. I'll wave next time!

Shocking times when you are forced to agree with Gove.

Supermarkets stockpiling but even they can only stockpile a few days worth

Not sure you've been looking very well Grin

“I've been trotting out an "imagine what you need if you are snowed in for three days" thing for months now on here. “

Fear 3 days won’t make a lot of difference one way or the other (well, 3 day’s worth of difference, obviously 😊). Started a while ago, witj 3 month’s worth in mind. Worst case, our diet will be very basic, tuna, pasta and passata, anyone?, but we’ll have vitamin/mineral pills, our prescription meds (if you order online you can usually get away with a week early each month, though a bit late now) and loo paper. Best case, I’m a lunatic and will have much lighter food bills for 3 months.

Maybe wave a kipper? (Oh dear, showing my age, Monty Python ....)

viccat · 21/02/2019 09:28

I've talked about stockpiling cat food with RL friends (because we have cats who mostly eat the brands on ZooPlus i.e. arriving from Germany...) but that's about it. And my boss said he had asked his GP about stockpiling prescription meds as he's taking lots of different ones. That's about all I've heard.

@redhat I’m afraid all of those links pertain to fresh food shortages and price increases. I understand there may be less fresh food. I understand prices may increase. But where does it say there will be no food to buy, as in we’d need to rely on stockpiles of dried pasta?

The last link in fact says the supermarkets are buying in more tinned/ long life goods due to fresh food availability.

redhat · 21/02/2019 09:31

Exactly - hardly a problem

Whereas those who haven't put anything aside could have a very big problem.

bellinisurge · 21/02/2019 09:32

I agree with your username @JRMisOdious but I have been working on here to get people to do a bit and then see for themselves what suits their circumstances beyond that. 3 days is standard emergency management recommendation - more in many countries. If I said " do three weeks" etc, from zero, that would put people off and exclude people.

Erm, don't you understand the basic premise that if fresh food isn't available then people will need to eat more tinned and long life food. Thus decreasing the availability of those foods?

Ciwirocks · 21/02/2019 09:34

I don’t know anyone in real life who is stockpiling and I can’t afford to so will just have to eat what’s available. No one I know in work etc even discusses brexit I think there is a general feeling that we have no control over it so no point worrying until we know.

RedSkyLastNight · 21/02/2019 09:34

3 days of supplies will make 3 days worth of difference (for example, If there is a surge of panic buying post Brexit it gives you a cushion).
For people suddenly waking up to the thought that they might stockpile, it also seems very doable, which buying food to last several weeks doesn't if you are starting from scratch. Of course once you've bought for three days you can then build that up to a week, then 2 weeks ...

Plus lots of people don't have much surplus money to forward buy;its worth pointing out that even a few days worth of extra is muchbetter than nothing.

Cherrypi · 21/02/2019 09:34

Our ASDA delivery man said loads of people in our town are stockpiling and we're in a leave area.

Gran22 · 21/02/2019 09:38

We've not stocked up. DH and I are old enough to remember rationing, and although there weren't the choices, we always ate. I really can't see countries who normally sell to us wanting their perishables to go unsold. Lidl and Aldi aren't UK based, they just have branches here. Much of their produce comes from mainland Europe - does anyone really think they'll just stop selling it?

We'll probably put a couple of loaves in the freezer, and buy a few extra loo rolls in case there is a short term shortage. Local fruit and veg will still be available from our green grocers, plus we have bakers and butchers as well as supermarkets. We'll still be able to buy apples, perhaps no avocados though. Smile

viccat · 21/02/2019 09:46

It seems there are different methods for this. One is to stockpile your favourite things in case they are unavailable for some time, and the other is to buy cheap basics (rice, dried lentils or beans etc.) to make sure you have something to eat in an absolute crisis.

Or both, meaning you can pretty much carry on as normal.

borntobequiet · 21/02/2019 09:48

No, of course, no one wants their produce to remain unsold, it will all be fine. Though some of us also just about old enough to remember (the very end of) rationing might disagree. Me for example.

JustBeingJobless · 21/02/2019 09:51

I’ve got a good stock of toilet roll, pasta, rice, bread flour, tins etc and my freezer is full. Doesn’t hurt to have a bit extra in and it’ll all get used at some point anyway. I’m lucky in that I live just down the road from a dairy farm that pasteurise their own milk and sell it on site, along with eggs, so we’ve always got a good supply of that, plus I love that you can see the cows happily in their field and know where the milk has come from :)
