I've been playing with this app and if it were Checkmate the game would stop but it hasn't. I know my chances of wriggling out of this mess are slim but what are my option here?

I'm white.

I can’t see how it’s not checkmate - will the app let you capture Black’s Rook? It shouldn’t, of course, because then you’d be in check to the Bishop, but the only thing I can think of is that the app has somehow not registered that the Bishop is there.

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 18/02/2019 17:54

Just to confirm,is the king the piece with the little cross at the top and you're white right?

gamerwidow · 18/02/2019 17:57

Does the app think you can take the Rook with your pawn?
Can't see what else it thinks you would do

Why don’t you move your king one space to the left?

OneShotFinch · 18/02/2019 17:58

It doesn't think you can castle, does it? It would be wrong on many levels, but just a thought?

IzzyGee · 18/02/2019 17:59

I guess that is a bishop bottom right...ignore me

OneShotFinch · 18/02/2019 18:01

@IzzyGee because she'd be in check by the bishop, and you can't put yourself into check.

akkakk · 18/02/2019 18:03

Bishop supporting rook so long can’t take rook
Nothing else can take rook
Therefore is checkmate

I assume that the rook must have been on the back row and taken a piece sitting next to the king to get to that place else it would have been check last go and this situation couldn’t have arisen

Try a different app!

akkakk · 18/02/2019 18:04

King not long!

billybagpuss · 18/02/2019 18:05

Yep checkmate :)

undercoverhero · 18/02/2019 18:07

I seem to remember that in some instances your king can switch places with your rook if the rook hasn't yet moved during the game? May be worth a try

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 18/02/2019 18:08

But OP said she's white?!?

TeenTimesTwo · 18/02/2019 18:12

Move your Bishop to C4 so it attacking the Black Queen.

If Queen takes you, move your rook to E1.

If Queen goes to 8th row or along 7th, then move Bishop to F8.

TeenTimesTwo · 18/02/2019 18:14

(actually, if Queen goes along 7th then take the rook on A2)

derikthesheep · 18/02/2019 18:16

Undercover it's called castling I think but pretty sure you can't do it to get out of check. I'm stumped!

TeenTimesTwo · 18/02/2019 18:36

You can't castle out of check and can only do it anyway if neither the King nor the castle have moved yet. You also can't castle through check.

Am I misreading the pieces? OP where is your king?

RustyBear · 18/02/2019 18:38

TeenTimesTwo - White can’t make any move that doesn’t get their King out of check.
You can’t castle if either the King or the Rook involved have moved previously, which the King obviously has, as it’s not on its original square,, nor can you castle to get out of check.

undercoverhero · 18/02/2019 18:38

The OP's king is in the bottom right corner. Well at least I think they are the brown prices Confused

akkakk · 18/02/2019 18:39

There is no choice - if you are checked you have to get out of check - if you can’t get out of check then it is checkmate

Your options are:

  • eat the piece doing check - king can’t as would then be in check from the bishop - not allowed / no other piece can
  • move the king out of check - nowhere here to move
  • move something in between (unless checking piece is a knight which can check across other pieces) nothing here to move inbetween

Therefore is absolutely checkmate

You can never castle into / out of or through check

TeenTimesTwo · 18/02/2019 18:40

OK. got it now.
Bishop on D7 to E6

Then that bishop will be taken by the other bishop. Then it will be checkmate.

Smile
TeenTimesTwo · 18/02/2019 18:43

I reckon the OP's King is in the top right, and is in check by the bishop on D4.

(at least where I am numbering up the rows as we are looking).

She needs to move her own bishop to block the check.
The currently checking bishop will take her bishop.
Then it will be checkmate?

RustyBear · 18/02/2019 18:43

TeenTimesTwo -are you thinking that the pieces that look silver are White? They are actually Black, though I don’t think it’s a very good choice of colour.

TeenTimesTwo · 18/02/2019 18:46

That is what I'm thinking.
As isn't the top right king in check by a bishop?

undercoverhero · 18/02/2019 18:47

@TeenTimesTwo I think you have become confused, I know I certainly am now 😂😂 the king is in the bottom right corner next to her rook

billybagpuss · 18/02/2019 18:49

What I don't understand is the Castle can only move horizontally, its currently tucked in behind a pawn, how did it get there if it wasn't check last move too?? It could only have got there on a single move by going diagonally which its not allowed to do Confused

I think this app is seriously screwed and if you paid ask for your money back if you didn't find a better one.
