Should I paint my bedroom white?

Just that really. Bedroom is currently a magnolia (unchanged since we moved in). The carpet is brown. I hate both colours. The room is under the eaves but is quite bright as we have a glass door leading in to a balcony.

We have a mix of antiquey brown and white furniture. So, what colour would you paint it? And what colour carpet?

Should also say we have brown wood fitted wardrobes. So other furniture isn’t fixed but they can’t be changed.

To brighten it up i would do one statement wall in a bright colour bold pattern

Mines under the eaves (no balcony sadly!) I've the walls a chalky white. It's nice and quite soothing. The 'brilliant white' can be a bit startling I find, but the slightly off white are less so.

Popular choice but I'd still go for grey.

Eyebrows2016 · 15/02/2019 16:38

Issy the trouble is I don’t have a very big wall to do a different colour/ pattern as most of the walls are sloping.

Red I think you might have a good point about brilliant white.

Head what carpet colour would you do with grey? And do you think it would look good with oak wood colour? Dd has a grey bedroom but all her furniture is white.

I'd keep the carpet.

No. I stayed for a few weeks in an apartment with a white bedroom. Lying in bed, staring up at a white ceiling surrounded by white walls made me feel like I was in a sensory deprivation chamber. Horrible - for me, anyway.

PCohle · 15/02/2019 18:11

I think white could be lovely. It makes rooms feel so much lighter and more spacious.

Bedrooms have the opportunity for lots of pillows, throws, blankets etc to add colour if you find white a bit stark. Those can be changed up easily and cheaply if you get bored or for different seasons. I do think having art on the wall is important if you go white.

Snowmaggedon · 15/02/2019 19:27

Yes but make sure it's crisp pure White... not something with bluey Hue...

Snowmaggedon · 15/02/2019 19:27

YY to art!!

PetuniaPetunia · 15/02/2019 19:30

Yes and if you buy pure brilliant white it's a lot cheaper than other colours.

sighrollseyes · 15/02/2019 19:36

My whole house is white but have a statement wall colour or wallpaper on one wall in each room.

sighrollseyes · 15/02/2019 19:37

Two reasons: white paint is cheap and no faffing around doing edges if everything is white!

AnotherEmma · 15/02/2019 19:37

Pure white would be too clinical but some kind of "off white" or a very pale colour works well IMO.

My bedroom walls are a very pale blue/grey colour. Some white furniture, some wood. Crisp white sheets. It's very calming and restful. The carpet is hard to describe but it's neutral and textured, kind of mid/pale grey/oatmeal.

I'm a big fan of bright colours, in general and used tastefully elsewhere in the house, but not for a bedroom.

nzeire · 15/02/2019 19:37

I LOVE everything white, clean, crisp, fresh, soothing... charcoal carpet

Eyebrows2016 · 15/02/2019 20:12

Thanks all, I’m sold. White all the way. One of my worries is that the sloping ceilings don’t leave too much space for art, but we’ll squeeze it in somewhere.

I’m also v intrigued by the sound of a textured oatmeal carpet!

I have just redone mine white. I have got Timeless by Dulux for the lounge.

AnotherEmma · 15/02/2019 20:21

Carpet! It's wool

Should I paint my bedroom white?
AnotherEmma · 15/02/2019 20:23

Looks nicer in reality than in the photo

NotHeightyButMighty · 15/02/2019 20:31

My whole house is white. Love it, but will be doing the odd feature wall soon though for a change

NotHeightyButMighty · 15/02/2019 20:33

@sighrollseyes can I ask what colours you used for feature walls please, I'm about to add some colours and not sure what to go for, don't want to spoil it.

CottonSock · 15/02/2019 20:35

I went from Orange to white with some black wall art (not popular here but it's my room). I love it, and brighten up with some jazzy ethnic type curtains I found in John Lewis.

Flowerpower321 · 15/02/2019 20:36

Sulus timeless- warm white, goes with everything

Flowerpower321 · 15/02/2019 20:36

That’s Dulux stupid autocorrect

barkinatthemoon · 15/02/2019 20:43

we have dulux white mist in the bedroom. it's really fresh looking without the clinicalness of just a stark white. It almost looks completely white but then up against the ceiling and door frames, you can tell it has a subtle grey hue. We have dark wooden floors, and grey furniture which it goes well with. If we were to carpet the room I'd go for a mid grey, a pale oatmeal sort of colour, or Is go for a seagrass type of flooring. I would avoid anything too "warm" in colour as I feel it would look dirty up against the fresh pale walls.
