... I'm going to tell you about all the secret and amazing foods you just (most likely) ignore when you wander down the aisles....

Alibi Max
Location: world food, Polish section
What is it? A polish version of Lion, but bigger and nicer and cheaper. 50p normally. Currently 3 for £1 at Tesco.

Wedel - Jaffa cakes
Location: polish food
What are they? The only Jaffa cakes you will ever eat ever again. Also come in cherry flavour and raspberry.

Chilli and Lemon grills
Location: world foods, asian food section
What are they? Then is delicious potato snack you'll ever have. Lemony and spicy and delicious little crisps

quorn southern fried nuggets
Where? Freezers vegetarian section

What are they? A Good, spicy, cheap (especially as they're £1 a bag right now)
L alternative to chicken nuggets.

frozen garlic/ginger cubes
Where? Freezer, Asian section
What are they? About 30 cubes if crushed garlic, ginger (or both mixed together) around £1-£1.50. saves peeling and chopping fresh, and way cheaper than any 'lazy garlic'

There was a whole thread last week about people like you justagirl dingbat indeed.
Fab thread and the chilli and lemon grills are indeed great.

MaybeitsMaybelline · 15/02/2019 13:14

@00100001 that's the frozen garlic and ginger I buy from Asda! You can also get a combined frozen garlic and ginger, the puree is mixed together then frozen. Same brand.

Oh the ease...

I find that Morrisons and Asda both have much better world food aisles in multi-cultural areas, no surprise there, but you may be disappointed if you shop in a store in a less diverse area.

The world foods aisle in our local Tesco is a more token gesture than the wonderful ones 10 miles away in Asda and Morries.

bobstersmum · 15/02/2019 13:16

There are some samosas in the freezer section of world foods that I've been getting for years that are just amazing, the make is Humza, they are approx £3.50 for a bag of 20, I get the meat ones but they do chicken tikka ones as well I believe. This is in Tesco.

Great thread! No idea why people are being so negative.

I live in Spain so my 'world food' aisle are a miserable can of Heinz baked beans, Blue Dragon noodles and some Pataks Korma!

Tinkletwat · 15/02/2019 13:20

These are up there with the cherry jaffa cakes, they have a properly boozy taste to them.

Chilli and Lemon Grills have been a hot in this house for ages. I often go down the world food aisles and have tried loads. It's great Grin

Lolly34h · 15/02/2019 13:26

Polish food shops also stock random flavours of cheetos! The paprika one are amazing and so cheap too £1.29 for a big bag

SoSaidTheHorse · 15/02/2019 13:28

I tried the frozen garlic but I couldn't separate the bloody things when I only wanted to use one of them. What's the secret?

soulrider · 15/02/2019 13:28

We don't have a world food aisle :-(

dontgobaconmyheart · 15/02/2019 13:54

Do other people really not notice or buy stuff like this in the supermarket anyway? The 'world food' aisle is just another aisle surely, a lot of the food is stuff you'd buy anyway!
We're always looking in the 'world food' section and trying things we've not tried, maybe we need to get out more Grin. Have been using the Taj frozen garlic/ginger from the 'world foods' Confused freezer sections for years, ditto the frozen spinach and chilli -it is handy, the ginger especially, but the garlic is weak compared to using fresh, in my opinion. Good for lazy cooking days though (so most of them for me). The minced garlic paste from the world food aisle is better, brilliant for curries and still way cheaper than the Lazy Garlic, which just tastes of vinegar anyway.

Will try the Alibi bar though OP if I see one! Agree the Quorn nuggets are quite nice, im a veggie and am not a big fan of Quorn generally but they are ok- though they do have that oven food taste I think, as with all frozen oven foods.

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 15/02/2019 14:16

Thanks, OP. I am enjoying this thread and look forward to more suggestions.

DoneLikeAKipper · 15/02/2019 14:28

@SoSaidTheHorse, honestly? I just whack the bag against the counter. Not recommended unless you have cheaper tops like me though Grin. Maybe against an old table/chair/unliked family member instead...

tshirtsuntan · 15/02/2019 15:00

I buy jars of ginger and garlic paste mixed together, laila brand, from Lidl. It's really nice and strong.

tshirtsuntan · 15/02/2019 15:02

Has anyone seen the maggi brand powdered coconut milk lately? In a yellow box. I can't seem to find it anymore.

ketchupormayo · 15/02/2019 15:12

Chickpeas in world section in Tesco 4 £1, 2 aisles down chickpeas 2 £1!

Strawberryfield12 · 15/02/2019 15:48

The Polish isle in Tesco's is really good for a number of things:
Kefir, which is now in fashion in the UK. A tiny bottle made in UK costs about £2, in Polish isle 1 litre bottle £1.40. Considering that kefir is widely used in Eastern Europe, it is probably more authentic than the 200ml price of gold one;

Their cottage cheese called Twarog is good for cheesecakes, either baked or fresh ones;

All of their hot dog sausages are tasting nice, have high % of meat, 6 pack for £1.20 or so.

00100001 · 15/02/2019 16:06

@Ginkythefangedhellpigofdoom
Try the raspberry Wedel ones, they're good!

I buy Ting, 'Zesty Fruit Fizz' (basically grapefruit) from Sainsbury's - It is either 35p or 40p a can - either drink it on it's own or a a mixer with sloe gin.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/02/2019 17:15

Love the polish section at Tesco! I bought a huge bag of pretzel sticks for 75p, plus the chocolate wafer biscuits (like pink panther biscuits Smile) are also really nice and 75p for a big bag. I always look there for snack/treat food first now.

Asda's Lancashire farms yogurt, huge bucket, is £1-£1.50 ish and it's delicious, it's so thick it's like ice cream! Really tasty.

plominoagain · 15/02/2019 17:19

Oh I love Ting . I can’t always find it though so I bulk buy when I do . Our local rural Morrison’s in Norfolk , although small , has an excellent Eastern European section and does those smoked paprika Cheetos ..

I also pass a brilliant but decidedly unhip Polish shop that has branched out, when I’m walking from the tube into work , so I tend to buy large packets of spices and am currently working my way through the 11 different varieties of their Jaffa cakes . Oh dear ..

ValleyoftheHorses · 15/02/2019 17:28

Greek week at Lidl- tinned vine leaves, aubergine, butter beans etc. Not amazingly cheap at £1 per tin but delicious and a great addition to a store cupboard for easy accompaniments.

Justanothernamechange2 · 15/02/2019 17:33

If you make your own breaded things.. scotch eggs, kievs, fishcakes and such - the breadcrumbs on the polish aisle are far superior to the tubs of supermarket or saxo ones and you get like a kilo bag for 50p.... my DP makes me make "mozerella" sticks with cheesestrings and these..far too often!

sushisuperstar · 15/02/2019 17:45

Maggi sauce for on pasta usually in the polish bit or condiment bit!!

00100001 · 15/02/2019 17:47
