Did anyone else's mum give them a food nobody you speak to has heard of?

Although with mumsnet I bet others have had 'it:
In my case it's a' treat' of Cabbage Water
Basically when she cooked (boiled) cabbage (which was with a chopped onion, pepper and nutmeg) I could have a cup of the water after (veg stock I suppose)
I did see it as a treat and am drinking some now, remembering her fondly.

My mum used to put sprouted mung beans in my packed lunch at primary school. Other kids thought it was weird and told me so.

Ooh these are bringing back so many memories! Mum made us Ox-eye eggs, thick slice of bread and butter, cut a rough circle out of the middle and put a spoon of sugar on it and we'd eat that while she slapped the rest of the slice in a frying pan with an egg cracked into the hole.

Dad's recipe for a dodgy chest (I had asthma but they didn't figure it out till I was about ten) was a Spanish onion warmed up in vinegar, and you drink the vinegar, or an onion sliced up with sugar poured over it and left overnight, the onion sort of dissolves into the sugar and you get oniony syrup.

Herja I used to seek out sosmix as it meant I could have a 'meal' as a vegetarian in the early '80s.
The "fruity marmite" was pear & apple spread and I used to love that! You can still get it!

Tartex, sosmix and pear and apple spread. All part of my student vegetarian days. I lived on those three things. All bought from the earthy Steiner shop in Bristol.
My son grew up on sosmix "meatballs" with spaghetti and at 24 still loves the idea of them but I do not make them anymore.

My mum used to fry fish and give us the hot oil with a sprinkling of salt over boiled rice. It was the biggest comfort food of my childhood. I loved it.

My Mum (and I), still use the cabbage water as our 'gravy' when cooking bacon and cabbage. So she'd boil the bacon (this was back when you'd have to change the water on the bacon during cooking as it was so salty), change the water, continue boiling the bacon and cook the cabbage in the fatty/salty bacon water. That was then the gravy for over the potatoes.

Never had this anywhere else, but when making mash, my mother would finely chop an onion and mix it through the mash with butter and salt.

And the only horrendous concoction that I have come up with myself (in a drunken state), but which continued to be the food of choice when I rolled in drunk in my youth was:

Koka curry noodles
Tuna
Baked beans

All mixed together! It looked like vomit, and if you encountered the unwashed bowl the next morning it induced vomit. Haha. But for me it was the food of the Gods.

My dad used to make this gopping thing with frankfurters in that was an approximation of a casserole. Would have been about 1991

A Mars bar thinly sliced and eaten between slices of brown bread and butter. It didn't work with white bread. It was a real, once a decade treat. But there again, I do come from the home of the deep fried Mars bar - not that I have ever eaten one!

Luncheon meat or tongue butties for school. Usually with pickle on.

We had cous cous very early on as well. Nobody had heard of it!

Symington's Table Cream - maple & walnut flavour for us, the epitome of sophistication! And Butterscotch angel delight.

I also remember a thing called a cheese pudding, which was like a much more substantial cheese souffle - I think it had breadcrumbs in it?

And I remember my mum (born in 1940) being very cross with us for not enjoying a bowl of frozen custard - i.e. just normal Bird's custard, left in the freezer until it had the consistency of granite. It had been a great treat in her childhood, apparently.

Corned beef hash
Basically corned beef and mash mixed together. I made it a whole ago and DS said it looked like dog food but tasted lovely Grin

Also mum used to eat brawn, some pink offal stuff melted over chips. Gross!

Chopped up egg in a cup with butter and salt was known as "Chucky egg" where I was brought up (Cheshire).

My mum used to do thing called "beef olives". They were basically strips of beef wrapped in some sort of leaf but had a hideous cheesy undertone. They were her signature dinner party dish. She also used to serve (tinned) crab in giant seashells with a crispy crust on top Grin. However, I will never forgive her fruit salad horror..she used to make the most gorgeous fresh fruit salad, full of apple, orange, cherries, grapes, strawberries, kiwi, pineapple etc etc and then smother it in vanilla essence. I never understood it, ruined the whole thing. She was actually a really good cook aside from these horrors! My Nan used to try and spoon feed us all the jelly that you get in tinned meat, it made me gag.

My nan once cooked macaroni with milk and sugar. It was worse than revolting.

Oh my god my mum used to make this. It was indeed worse than revolting.

Bread and milk as described above (chunks of bread in hot milk with lots of sugar) was also a 'poorly' food in our house and I remember loving it back then. I tried it as an adult and can confirm that it is in fact disgusting.

My mum used to make mince curry, which was beef mince mixed with sultanas, chunks of apple and the contents of an out of date tub of curry powder. Served with a solid wedge of overcooked rice. Also revolting.

My mum's side of the family used to hold huge family parties and there was always a large glass dish of sliced cucumber and sliced onion (strong) in vinegar. Can see it now.
DM went up market whenever she did it by sprinkling black pepper on hers.

I didn’t realise Macaroni pudding (macaroni, milk, sugar) was weird - I used to love it! A bit like rice pudding, just with macaroni instead of rice.

My mum used to make ‘dollops’. Left-over roast beef or lamb put through the mincer and added to mashed potato, fried onions and loads of parsley. Then formed into cakes, dipped in flour and fried until they developed a crispy crust. Really delicious. I still make them very occasionally. Lovely with baked beans and HP sauce.

I remember the breakfast slices - we used to get them at guide camp.

My granny's corned beef pie was legendary. Corned beef, mixed with spaghetti hoops, topped with mash potato.
