Although with mumsnet I bet others have had 'it:
In my case it's a' treat' of Cabbage Water
Basically when she cooked (boiled) cabbage (which was with a chopped onion, pepper and nutmeg) I could have a cup of the water after (veg stock I suppose)
I did see it as a treat and am drinking some now, remembering her fondly.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc I’ve wondered for years what those ‘pork strips’ were and now I know thank you! They were delicious!

OJZJ · 14/02/2019 18:14

MattBerry I think your 'Slop' is incredibly fashionable at the moment as well as tasty and healthy, good old mum really did know best Grin

My mum used to make boboti. It was the only thing she made that I hated.

Milk jelly ... ie packet of strawberry jelly made with half water half milk ... I still do it and find it very soothing!

And the one I can't understand why no one else loves - Mum used to do a delicious baked custard with brown sugar underneath. Just milk and eggs and sugar and a wee bit of vanilla... and we always guessed whether the sugar would be crunchy underneath (yum! like Tablet) or syrupy. I've made it for my DD and for a friends kids and they didn't like it - much preferring creme caramel, etc...WHY OH WHY?

BackBoiler · 14/02/2019 18:24

My mum used to pour a bit of milk on a plate then grate cheese on top and grill. We then mopped it up with bread! WTF but I ate it???

SchadenfreudePersonified · 14/02/2019 18:26

Panacalty (not sure how to spell it)

Could you mean panhaggerty? Thinly sliced potatoes and onions and cheese stewed together. Is lovely!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/02/2019 18:26

Cheese pudding - delish - but hardly anyone else seems to have heard of it.

Breadcrumbs soaked in hot milk, lots of grated cheese and a bit of mustard, beaten eggs, salt and pepper, mix all well, whack in a greased dish in the oven.
I never had a proper recipe, so had to fiddle it out.
Always a favourite of a dd.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 14/02/2019 18:27

Bone marrow is lush, Claire

SparklySneakers · 14/02/2019 18:27

We all enjoyed the special pudding of bananas, custard and digestives. Miss fussy doesn't eat bananas but she liked them with the custard.

bluebellmiriam · 14/02/2019 18:32

My grandma and mother always gave us 'scilly'with Christmas pudding. It was years before I discovered that no-one had ever heard of it!It is basically white almond flavoured sauce.

VictoriaBun · 14/02/2019 18:34

A ' special school holiday treat ( don't tell your dad !)
Me and mum would have a beefburger in the middle of a plate with curried bake beans around it and a ring of boiled rice. It felt very posh at the time !

PotteryLottery · 14/02/2019 18:36

Raw egg and Ready Brek. I think she was trying to kill us.

ReanimatedSGB · 14/02/2019 18:37

OMG someone else has Pie Soup? I thought this was some hideous invention of DS and his dad - they will have a steak pie with a tin of soup poured over it...
The one my family used to confound other people with was 'An egg in a bucket' which is basically a coddled egg, that's just what we always called them.

SplinterCat · 14/02/2019 18:37

@Herja
This is your 'sweet Marmite'. German apple jam. Heaven!

I also love Tartex. Local independent healthfood shop stocks it.

LouH1981 · 14/02/2019 18:41

My mum used to give us a small bowl of brown sugar and butter if we had a cough. I guess to coat the throat? I don’t know 🤷🏻‍♀️ But if I put a spoon of the two together now it takes me right back!

libra101 · 14/02/2019 18:41

My mum used to boil and pickle samphire. It's a type of seaweed and my brothers used to go and pick it on the local marshes. It was delicious, and I think these days it's considered a kind of delicacy.

Bentleybottom · 14/02/2019 18:55

My nan and mum both gave us girls cabbage water growing up. We were told it helps keep spots at bay....and they and we all had really good skin. Also toast and dripping with salt was a family favourite too 😋

wooo69 · 14/02/2019 18:55

We used to have Mangle Wurzel. It was turnip but we didn’t like turnip, however we loved mangle wurzel lol.

WFTisgoingoninmyhead · 14/02/2019 18:56

My mum used to make fried Minced beef in tomato soup poured over mashed potato

Camomila · 14/02/2019 18:57

So much pearl barley! And quinoa (in the mid 90s)

(In her defence it was a dietician approved diet for cancer)
