If you've had flu this year how long before you recovered?

Pinkkahori · 13/02/2019 07:49

I've been totally floored by the flu since the weekend.
High temperature, awful cough, headache, all over aches and pains. No appetite and not sleeping much.
I feel totally depleted. Luckily I don't have to work til the weekend and DH was able to help with school run etc. yesterday and i got to stay in bed but today I have to get up and get the kids out, arrange something for dinner and probably do other things that my fuzzy brain has forgotten.
I barely have the energy to get to the bathroom.
Hoping someone will come along to tell me I'll be back to normal by tomorrow.

I am on my tenth day since actually catching it and today is the first day I could probably do half a days work.

WheelyCote · 13/02/2019 08:25

Flu at the back end of las year. Off work for about 10 days and not 100% for about 3 weeks

Hope you feel better soonFlowers

Pinkkahori · 13/02/2019 08:27

Oh dear, i was afraid of that! I feel like every drop of energy has been drained from me.
Also I've just realised that today is Wednesday so the weekend is coming sooner than I thought.
Based on the fact that I've only managed to make the packed lunches and had to lie down I might not be recovering as quickly as I hoped.

I only work weekends, very few hours. Wondering if it might be wise to arrange someone to cover for me. I've already had a colleague offer.
Hope you feel better soon Astral.

I had it a couple of weeks ago. Had 5 days off work (should have had a couple more) and took me nearly 2 weeks to get over. I'd had the flu jab, I assume it would have been an even longer recovery I hadn't.

Get well soon Flowers

Upsy1981 · 13/02/2019 18:23

I had it last week. Came down with it overnight Tuesday to Wednesday. Went back to work yesterday. Couldn't have gone in on Monday as still completely lacking in energy but then did turn a corner quite noticeably Monday evening and mamaged to take DD to her club. Hadn't been out for 5 days before that.

Villanellesproudmum · 13/02/2019 18:27

I’m in the tail end of it, started exactly two weeks ago, just left with a hacking cough now.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 13/02/2019 18:38

I went down with it on New year's Eve.
Then I caught something very similar three weeks later.
Took me ages to pull up from round two. This week I finally feel like I'm getting close to normal.

madeyemoodysmum · 13/02/2019 18:40

Dh. Poorly for 4/5 days. Tired for another week. Couldn’t go gym etc. But was ok for office based job.

Pinkkahori · 13/02/2019 18:51

Thanks for the replies.
I am on day 5 now, although the first day and half was just the cough. The other delights came on later on the second day.
So really only 3 days into the worst of the symptoms.
I have been slightly better today because even though I have no appetite I did eat a little.
My cough is less painful now but quite wheezy.

Started feeling ropey last Tuesday, couldn't move by Weds eve.

Am 34 weeks preg (and had the jab). Was hospitalised thurs-Sat. Thought I was dying. Am only marginally better, had to pick up my 4 year old from nursery today and it's wiped me out.

Been signed off for 2 weeks

Suspect I'm the exception not the norm though!

CatsForLife · 13/02/2019 18:59

God it’s awful. I was in bed for five days, off work for a week and a half, and three weeks before I felt normal.

ScrumpyCrack · 13/02/2019 19:01

Mine brewed for about a week then floored me for a week, it hurt to open my eyes and breathe. Then I thought I was feeling better so went into work on Monday but my head was swimming, legs aching, sneezing and coughing. Slept 15 hours and woke up yesterday feeling worse again.

Huntawaymama · 13/02/2019 19:07

Ah man sounds exactly like what I've got. Had been hoping it'd be something that would pass quickly. I got floored by it on Sunday. I was at my mums, felt totally fine bar a niggly throat, popped outside to the car, came back in and over 10mins I just went rapidly down hill. Currently have bright red cheeks and feel hot but my legs are all tingly and cold and my chest and back really ache. I'm breastfeeding so figure it's guna take me ages to get over as my immune system is too busy looking after baby. Feel awful for dd1 who started two weeks ago, she's better now but still tired, hate the idea of kids going through this

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 13/02/2019 19:09

I fell ill fairly suddenly a couple of days after Christmas, I started with a cough and within a couple of hours my muscles were aching. I spent 4 days in bed with no appetite and a temp of nearly 39C. I started to feel slightly more human after one week, but not well enough to go back to work (school). I took a further week off work and returned 17 days after I first felt ill, still with a cough and a very hoarse voice.

I've never had flu before and it was a horrible time, New Year feels like it didn't happen at all.

Xenadog · 13/02/2019 19:09

About 4 weeks from start until I felt properly well again. I ended up going to work when I shouldn’t have and I think that delayed my recovery by about a week.

Marmite27 · 13/02/2019 19:13

I think my kids have it (3.5 and 10 months) they’ve had raging temperatures, very tired and a hacking cough. Big one started early hours Saturday morning, little one yesterday. Neither have any appetite even for cake/chocolate which is unheard of.

I feel crap too and would just like to sleep for a week.

Chimmychunga · 13/02/2019 19:15

Those who have been poorly with the flu, did you get the flu jab at all? Do you think your symptoms were lessened because of the jab or did you catch a different strain than was injected?

If you didn't get the flu jab, why didn't you?

user1471530109 · 13/02/2019 19:22

I think I'm coming out the other side. The cough is awful and still here. But the temperature has gone. It hit Sunday night with a vengeance. Under 2 duvets and shivering.

I had the flu jab.
I'm exhausted. I've been asleep all day all week. But I've said I'll go to work tomorrow. I'm now worried that's a mistake Grin. I definitely feel on the mend though. It was a bloody awful virus!

thesunwillout · 13/02/2019 19:27

Dc 12 came down with 'it' last Tuesday, having been very tired and moody for a couple of days before.
Severe cough, sore throat, fevers, bright red face, which lasted four days.
Nearly had an ambulance out one night, as struggling to breathe, but got to sleep.
Next morning head to toe soaked, went gp, chest clear.
It's 9 days on and still off school, hacking cough. No energy but looks back better colour today.

It came on for me very suddenly last Thursday night, muscle aches, cough, fever and got worse for four days.
Today is day six and I'm feeling more human.
I had the flu jab.
It's a few yrs since I felt like this.

Quite a violent fast bug, I feel for anyone who has had this.

thesunwillout · 13/02/2019 19:30

Oh and I had to alternate three nighties, as was fever sweating thru them all nights.

Adversecamber22 · 13/02/2019 19:33

I was not fully recovered for a month, very ill for a week. I was delirious one day and couldn’t even look at a tv screen.

PunkrockerGirl59 · 13/02/2019 19:38

Had flu over Christmas and new year Sad
It was 3-4 weeks after I was over the worst that I felt anything like approaching "normal".
Like Adverse I was extremely ill, talking nonsense for 2 days and the sweating went on for days, even once I'd started to improve a bit.
Hope you feel better soon OP.

riotlady · 13/02/2019 19:42

Came on very suddenly last Wednesday night, went back to uni yesterday but it was a struggle tbh and I’m still not right. Exhausted and have a horrible cough and sore throat.

bluddleuddleumdum · 13/02/2019 21:21

Three weeks tomorrow for me. As pp stated I seemed to have a virus at the start, unable to get out of bed, cough, malaise, then recovered slightly only for it to return with worse cough, sweats and heavy head cold last weekend. I've tried inhaler, cough syrup, Vicks, cough sweets. Havent eaten in days. I have had the flu jab and not sure it is flu as I had that years ago. Maybe just some new apocalyptic virus
