Salt poisoning?

DS (4) has come home with homemade biscuits from preschool.
On tasting they've definitely used salt instead of sugar...

He's eaten most of a pretty large one, do I need to worry about salt poisoning? What should I do?

They tasted pretty grim, I'm not sure how he managed to eat it!

Was it salt dough?

If so I did this at school last week and it’s about half the amount of salt to flour, just to give you an idea of what might have been consumed.

scaredofthecity · 12/02/2019 15:31

I thought that but he seemed pretty convinced they were to eat, surely they would have said?!
He definately said he made biscuits.

Don't you leave salt dough to dry?

No you put it in the oven. Or at least you did with the one we did. The kids I did it with were also convinced we were making biscuits. We used flour, we rolled them out, we cut them with biscuit cutters, we put them on baking trays, we took them to the school kitchen and asked the cook to put them in the ovens! All cooking things.

The next day we painted them and put glitter on them and some of them ŵere horrified!

TooMinty · 12/02/2019 15:37

Give him and big glass of water to wash it down? And no more salty food today.

scaredofthecity · 12/02/2019 15:39

Yeh I've given him lots to drink. I feel sick just from the little bit I ate. He seems fine though.

I would call 111 or poison control

EatToTheBeet · 12/02/2019 15:41

It’s good news if they are supposed to be biscuits as they will less salty.

exwhyzed · 12/02/2019 15:42

He isn't going to get salt poisoning from one salty biscuit.

Also surprised he ate it though if it's that bad.

ApolloandDaphne · 12/02/2019 15:44

I am sure he won't have salt poisoning. There is probably the same amount of salt in a packet of crisps as was in the biscuit.

scaredofthecity · 12/02/2019 15:45

Really? exwhyzed do you know that for sure?

That's obviously what I want to hear.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 12/02/2019 15:45

Would it be more salty than a pack of Cheddar's? I would think he'd be fine.

scaredofthecity · 12/02/2019 15:46

Defiantly more salt than crisps! it tasted vile, i can still taste the bloody thing.

Have you rung them up to see what the recipe was? Also, they need to be telling all the other parents.

Aquamarine1029 · 12/02/2019 15:53

Salt poisoning is a very real thing, but I highly doubt one biscuit will harm him. If you're concerned called 111. Make sure he has lots of water.

scaredofthecity · 12/02/2019 15:57

There's no one there now, they close at 3. I was thinking about putting something on the fb site but I don't want to harm their reputation as they're normally great and mistakes happen.

Thinking about it logically there can't have been that much, when I bake biscuits I use 100g sugar and that makes a lot of biscuits.

I'll keep him well hydrated and rethink dinner tonight!

Thanks all

Good plan OP.

SparklingTwilight · 12/02/2019 16:11

but I don't want to harm their reputation as they're normally great and mistakes happen.

I'd post because I wouldn't want people feeding them to younger siblings.
"ummmm are you sure you used sugar for the biscuits and not salt?! DS's taste decidedly...salty!"
should do it.

Beansonapost · 12/02/2019 16:59

From one biscuit...

I highly doubt it.

00100001 · 12/02/2019 18:09

no. he 'll be fine. it;s not like he drank a gallon of sea water or anything.

just give him lots to drink.

LuckyLou7 · 12/02/2019 18:41

He is very unlikely to suffer any ill-effects. Call 111 if you are concerned, they can consult Toxbase and calculate the possible amount he has ingested in one biscuit.

LynetteScavo · 12/02/2019 19:21

I ate a lot of salty play-do in nursery and promptly threw up.

I'd guess salt poisoning is a long term thing.

Call 111 if you're really concerned. Although it took them 45mins to figure out I'd half a bottle of Calpol was dangerous for a 3yo.

I once send DS into school with cooking ingredients for a Victoria sponge, giving him salt instead of sugar, so I can see how this happened. I'm usually an ace mum Wink

scaredofthecity · 12/02/2019 19:24

He's peed soo many times this evening. I think he's fine!

Thanks all.

OP posts:
scaredofthecity · 12/02/2019 19:26

Yep lynette I remember doing it as a child! I'm sure they've even done it on bake off!

OP posts:
scaredofthecity · 12/02/2019 19:28

They didn't eat it and say how yummy it was though SmileHmm
