How much did you pay for your glasses?

DP is moaning, went to Specsavers yesterday and ordered a pair of French connection glasses and a pair of sunglasses with anti glare coating on glasses as I do a lot of driving in the dark, totalling £129. He thinks £65 a pair is unreasonable! To shut him up can you all post how much you recently paid for glasses if you don't get a voucher? 😊

About £450 with the anti-glare. They're Tiffany frames.

silkpyjamasallday · 09/02/2019 21:48

I paid £270 for my most recent pair, and £400 for the pair before that which got stolen Sad I turned down the anti glare as it was another £50 and now wish I hadn't.

BigbreastsBiggerbeard · 09/02/2019 22:29

£25 for two pairs from glasses direct. Had a two for one offer and free postage, plus another discount that I can't remember. Bloody bargain!

Around £40 from Asda, which includes varifocal lensed. Been wearing glasses for about 40 years so I have had a few pairs. Best pair I have had in years. I can't believe their prices, my previous ones from a small opticians were about £200. My first pair of varifocals were great but after that they were never quite right. Had to go back loads of times for adjustment but not with this pair.

I really can't recommend Asda highly enough.

lurker101 · 10/02/2019 00:24

Last few pairs have been around £600 each due to lens thinning, anti glare and Tom Ford frames -worth every penny to see clearly in glasses that I enjoy wearing!

shazkiwi · 10/02/2019 00:37

I spent £160 on 2 pairs of glasses from Vision Express. One pair for reading - bog standard. The other for driving with anti glare and transition lenses.

dangermouseisace · 10/02/2019 00:42

I have one pair with the best lenses I could get reflection wise. Was about £250 in total. I’ve had cheap pairs I’ve been embarrassed to wear before, with these ones I can hold my head high. £65 a pair doesn’t even cover the cost of my standard lenses!

gonegnome · 10/02/2019 00:59

£45 from Asda, second highest level of thinning. They look virtually identical to some vvv fancy designer ones from a posh opticians (£400+ but can't remember which brand) and I'm really happy with them.

Montybabe · 10/02/2019 01:05

Just picked up my new ones. In the states and paid $600, the frames were on sale. Strong lenses but not progressive were $400 so frames were $200. UK seems like a bargain after living here!

QueenofLouisiana · 10/02/2019 06:17

I think I paid about £100. I’ve just bought DS new glasses, coming in at £360 for 2 pairs as his sight needs are not covered by the NHS.

BikeRunSki · 10/02/2019 06:31

£425, varifocals, fairly strong distance prescription.

*My argument is that I wear them all day long, every day. They are on my face so everyone sees them. They have to look good at all times. Nice glasses make me feel more confident. Lastly, but most importantly they help me to see.^. Totally agree with this.

Spam88 · 10/02/2019 07:20

I went to specsavers for the first time yesterday and couldn't believe how cheap their glasses are! My last ones (Ted Baker from vision express) were £300-odd for single vision, and that was with an £85 voucher. Most of that cost was for the thinned lenses. So yours definitely weren't expensive! It pained me slightly to pay the £300 but then I thought a) its my vision, so they're pretty important b) they'll last two years and c) I'll easily fritter away more than £300 in two years on crap I don't need.

anniehm · 10/02/2019 07:45

About the same as you, specsavers are cheap

Soontobe60 · 10/02/2019 07:53

I last bought glasses 2 years ago. Paid £275 for 2 pairs, varifocals, one tinted, not designer. I wear 1 pair all the time as my eyes are so bad. BOGOF.
So that works out at 275 / (365 x2) = 37.6p per day. Bargain🤓🤓😎😎

Soontobe60 · 10/02/2019 07:54

Over 2 years yours will work out at 17.67p per day.

Bluesheep8 · 10/02/2019 07:55

£69 for 2 pairs from Specsavers. Best glasses I've ever had. Aftercare is great too, as I had to have one pair re adjusted twice.

foxessocks · 10/02/2019 07:59

I've just paid £214 for a reglaze so not even new frames. Complex prescription. I have previously paid up to around £450 for a new pair. I have found Specsavers to be much better value and excellent service.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has to spend an absolute fortune, I always get a lot of patronising comments at the opticians (Specsavers are better though) and end up feeling like I'm the only person in the world with a complex prescription Confused maybe because I'm quite young to have such bad eyesight!!

MarshaBradyo · 10/02/2019 08:00

In total around £350

I did cheaply the time before and they were a bit off so a pain to wear

I put up with them for too long, the new ones are great

Kedgeree · 10/02/2019 08:15

foxessocks it's a shame that you get patronised at the opticians. I always get very pampered at mine because my condition is interesting and they fully understand the difficulties it causes. I've stuck with the same independent for donkeys years as the optician is mum to one of DS2's school friends (they're adults now) and she takes proper care of me having treated my deteriorating sight all this time.
I had to go to one of their competitors for my sports goggles and again, the optician there was caring and interested. I'm prepared to pay more to get the service I need and I don't believe I would get that from a large chain where staff have limits on their time etc. Boots in particular are terrible.

foxessocks · 10/02/2019 08:30

kedgeree I have to say Specsavers have been pretty good so far (one member of staff did a few too many sympathetic head tilts and awws for my liking but the optician himself was very matter of fact ). I switched originally because Specsavers were the only opticians who ever actually took the time to find a frame that really truly suited me so they are definitely better than previous experiences!

Vision express were awful in my experience. There was a woman there was continuously went on and on about my "terrible eyesight" and offered me Disney Princess frames because I suggested I needed a smallee style Hmm

This thread makes me realise I'm definitely not the only one with a complex prescription!

Sorry for the derailing though!

Boxlikeahare · 10/02/2019 08:30

foxes, I have mine reglazed at Lenses in Glasses. My prescription is very simple but it only costs £23 for mine to be reglazed incl return by signed for Royal Mail.

Edinburgh based from memory. Boots wanted £79!

foxessocks · 10/02/2019 08:32

box mine are glass lenses which probably makes a big difference to cost and they have to cut the lense to size at the shop because I can't leave without glasses or I wouldn't make it home!! Grin

Boxlikeahare · 10/02/2019 08:35

Oh, sorry foxes. Smile. That was no help then was it!

Chocolate1984 · 10/02/2019 08:43

I think mine were around £240 and that was with £50 off voucher. I get my lenses thinned & upgraded anti glare which makes night driving slightly easier.

DoorbellsSleighbellsSchnitzel · 10/02/2019 09:25

£380 for glasses (short sighted -4.50 and lenses were thinned) and £140 for sunglasses, both last year.
