Day and Night Nurse. Is it as good as they say?

DH has been struggling with a cold on and off since before Christmas. But last night he came home and was freezing cold, physically shivering despite being in a warm house with layers of clothes and a blanket over him on the sofa.

He’s dragged himself into work today but just rang to ask if I could get him some cold and flu stuff. I’ve never tried NN or DN but I’m thinking of trying, particularly if it will knock him out tonight and give him a really good rest.

Does it live up to the hype?

I don't take night nurse but I find day nurse very good.

RogueV · 04/02/2019 13:58

Yes they really help.
It’s one thing I missed when ill in pregnancy!

Hollowvictory · 04/02/2019 14:04

If he's ill though he shouldn't go to work and spread it round. If he did have actual flu he'd be physically unable to anyway. Hope he gets better soon

Yeah, we’ve both had proper flu in the past. The fact that he’s got no temp and is able to stand upright tells me it’s not flu!

And if I had my way he’d be off work. But he’s a stubborn bugger. And self employed, don’t work, don’t get paid. Luckily he’s got a steady week indoors, as opposed to last couple of weeks working in a freezing cold empty property.

Night nurse gives me a solid 13hrs sleep when I normally get about 6.... wonderful stuff

Wilma55 · 04/02/2019 14:34

Night nurse is great

haverhill · 04/02/2019 14:37

Night Nurse is very effective and very potent; it knocks me out all night and I'm a rubbish sleeper. Day Nurse is very good, too.

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 04/02/2019 15:00

Night nurse is great as long as you don't plan on driving or even functioning until lunchtime.

goingslow · 04/02/2019 15:29

They're both brilliant.

But, as per pp, don't take Night Nurse if you want to be anything other than a zombie before 11am.

winsinbin · 04/02/2019 15:42

They are both excellent. Don’t confuse the two like DH did recently, he accidentally took NN before a day at work and kept nodding off in the office.

RiverTam · 04/02/2019 15:44

I've only taken NN once when I had to get up in the morning and whilst it totally knocked me out I felt absolutely dire when I had to wake up, so I would only take it if you can lie in.

SinkGirl · 04/02/2019 15:47

The stuff in night nurse that knocks you out is promethazine - I had it during pregnancy for nausea and it really helped me sleep and you can buy it as a sleep aid over the counter. Day nurse contains pseudoephedrine which I find much more effective than the decongestants in things like beechams.

FoofFighter · 04/02/2019 15:53

Night nurse died t work on me but the boots own version of it is wonderful stuff

SamBaileys · 04/02/2019 15:54

I get terrible colds. The day nurse capsules are the only thing I've found that takes the edge off. Night Nurse is great stuff to help you sleep when you have a cold.
Word of advice- if you get the day and night capsules together, don't do what I did and take the night ones in the day time because you've run out of the day ones. Jeeeez, I thought I'd taken some class A, knocked me right out.

Katxie · 04/02/2019 15:55

Day and Night Nurse is the only thing that works for me when I have a cold, I've tried all the supermarket's own versions and they're just not the same!

UnderMajorDomoMinor · 04/02/2019 15:57

Night nurse and day nurse are amazing but only in the liquid form. They are expensive though if anyone knows a good copy let me know. I tend to take a half dose and then see how I get on it is very strong.

KeptTheBeachesShipwreckFree · 04/02/2019 16:21

I find that the night nurse doesn't make me tired if I'm up and about but it does make me sleep like the dead once I'm actually in bed. I had some when my step-dad was dying as I was so unsettled I couldn't stay asleep. Like pp though, I can't wake up properly the morning after; it takes an age to get rid of that foggy feeling so I wouldn't take it before work.

Boomerwang · 04/02/2019 16:33

Hi sorry for the hijack but is there a NN/DN for kids and has anyone found it to be effective? Considering having it sent over to Sweden as there is a total of about 3 things to choose from here and my kid doesn't like any of them.

CurlsandCurves · 04/02/2019 16:34

That’s great advice re getting up the next day. Will advise half a dose for night because he will be going to work tomorrow.

Thanks for helping DH avoid being a zombie and unfit to drive!

ittooshallpass · 05/02/2019 00:21

Half dose first is a good idea. I took it and it made me feel horrendous the next day. It's strong stuff. I personally would never take it again; it made me feel worse than the cold!

mycatplotsdeath · 05/02/2019 16:16

I rate them both.
I take night nurse if I'm not ill and can't sleep.
It's great stuff 😀

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 05/02/2019 16:21

NN relaxes me amazingly and nothing beats a good night's sleep when I feel ill. I like it too much in fact ... druggie Blush
Never tried Day Nurse.

crimsonlake · 05/02/2019 16:37

I have struggled to stay asleep the last few nights and remembered that I had some night nurse in the cupboard. I only took half a dose if that and as early as 7 pm. It did not make me any sleepier during the evening, but I slept better, unfortunately when I got a call for work at 7 am I could not wake up.

Bumblebee39 · 05/02/2019 17:32

@mycatplotsdeath

The sleep agent is promethazine which you can buy on its own (sometimes called phenergan) then you can take it for sleep without the additional ingredients which you only need if you're sick

mycatplotsdeath · 05/02/2019 17:59

@Bumblebee39 where would I get this?
