Be honest ... are there any genuinely delicious things I can make with red lentils?

I've got a glut of them and I don't really know why, or what to make.

I use puy or green lentils in soups and salads. Red lentils just make gritty mush don't they?

Red lentils, red onions and cheese loaf. Yum.

Turkish lentil soup - best comfort food ever.

Lentil Dahl, absolutely delicious for lunch on a cold day

Tarka Daal

Lentil and bacon soup, a good Scottish favourite. Bacon, lentils, onion, carrot (and if you're feeling fancy some leek and turnip) with ham stock cubes.

Dahl

Fry onion and garlic. Add spices. Add lentils and coconut milk. Cook.

Fry onions and garlic until crispy and scatter over the dahl.

Lentil Bolognese. Around 50g per person instead of the mince 😋

gamerchick · 03/02/2019 20:20

I just sling them in any meaty, saucy, soupy dish. I've never noticed they turn to gritty mush

ShowOfHands · 03/02/2019 20:20

Dahl defo.

I add them to loads of stuff but tonight it was vegan cottage pie.

Really good in soup.

DrWhy · 03/02/2019 20:20

Yes came on here to say dahl, I also use them as a thickening is casseroles and veggie bolognaise.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 03/02/2019 20:22

Dahl, lentil soup ... yum!

permanentlyexhaustedpigeon · 03/02/2019 20:22

Another vote for dhal - the one vegetarian curry my daughter loves. You can make a vat of it and it freezes beautifully.

Red lentil and sweet potato soup is good too (essentially the soup version of the same).

AwkwardSquad · 03/02/2019 20:23

Spiced carrot and lentil soup is pretty good.

PetuliaBlavatsky · 03/02/2019 20:24

I bloody love red lentils! We have them in loads of things, dhal, curries, shepherds pie, bolognese, soup. They're delicious!

caringcarer · 03/02/2019 20:24

Lentil loaf. My dh has it for his Xmas dinner.

importantkath · 03/02/2019 20:25

I honestly thought the difference was visual. I always mixed mine all up! (But I use them to pad out meals as above)

Chipsahoy · 03/02/2019 20:26

We just had spiced red lentil and carrot soup. Carrots, lentils, cumin, chili seeds all shoved in in slow cooker for a few hrs. Then blitz in blender. Serve with Naan.

Whatdoyouknowwhenyouknownowt · 03/02/2019 20:27

I made the dal out of Made in India, the cookery book tonight, it was lovely.

Catsandbootsandbootsandcats · 03/02/2019 20:27

I made lentil and bean chilli yesterday and it was really nice. It was the first time I'd made it, a bit of a last minute thing, so it was a delicious surprise!

RedHatsDoNotSuitMe · 03/02/2019 20:27

personally, I wouldn't have thought so.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 03/02/2019 20:28

Soups.. either a regular lentil or tomato, bacon, lentil.
Curries.. I got a great potato lentil curry recipe recently off Pinterest (I think it was served with cumin roasted cauliflower) or a dhal (delicious with naan bread).
Also as well as or instead of the meat in shepherds pie or bolognaise.

CatnissEverdene · 03/02/2019 20:29

I've got into the habit of boiling them separately first for a bit, so you can rinse off the foamy scum you get with them. They then seem to taste much nicer and you don't get the gritty mush effect with them. I use them mainly in curries and soups.

headinhands · 03/02/2019 20:29

Lentil, basil and Parmesan loaf. Creamy cheesiness.

TheProvincialLady · 03/02/2019 20:29

Easiest meal ever - red lentils (190g), a tin of coconut milk, stick of cinnamon, 1/2 tsp turmeric, 15 basil leaves, a finely chopped onion, 200ml water, a chunk of ginger, some chilli flakes, 1tsp salt. Bring to the boil and then simmer for 30-40 mins. Add more water while cooking if necessary. When cooked take out the cinnamon stick and ginger and squeeze over the juice of a lime. Serve with rice and say thank you nicely, because it’s the most delicious zero effort supper ever.

HeyLala · 03/02/2019 20:30

A creamy aubergine, potato and mushroom curry. Made with coconut milk, curry powder and lentils.
Absolutely sublime in this weather.

JessicaKenny2018 · 03/02/2019 20:30

Sweet potato Dahl, soup
