Be honest ... are there any genuinely delicious things I can make with red lentils?

I've got a glut of them and I don't really know why, or what to make.

I use puy or green lentils in soups and salads. Red lentils just make gritty mush don't they?

This is one of my absolute favourite recipes. It's incredibly delicious (and I used to be someone who didn't like lentils)

Dhal - fry onions in balti paste, add lentils, soften for a couple of minutes, add tinned tomatoes, cook till lentils are soft. So easy, and even my fussy eater loves it.

I like the sound of Lentil, basil and Parmesan loaf. Do you have a recipe headinhands?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/02/2019 20:36

People who've mentioned lentil loaves. Any chance of recipes, please?

Lentil nachos!

Onandonandons · 03/02/2019 20:47

Dahl and red lentil loaf are both tasty.

WendyCope · 03/02/2019 20:49

I make veggie shepherd's pie with them and soups and curries veggie bolognaise etc. I really don't like mince, so lentils replace most mince things.

Just chuck some in to everything really. Just don't add salt 'till they're cooked. Mustn't add salt. When they are cooked you can.

I learned on her you must rinse them first and I never used to! I do now Grin

Gina Ford has a genuinely delicious red lentil soup recipe in her weaning book. I made it, rather sceptically, for DS2 and ended up eating it with him loads of times. I make it for myself now.

Thick Lentil and Carrot Soup
1tbsp olive oil
1 small onion, peeled and thinly sliced
2 carrots, peeled and thinly sliced
1 garlic clove, peeled and chopped
200g red lentils
2 pints veg stock or filtered water

Heat oil in a large saucepan, add onion, carrots and garlic. Sweat for 3 -5 mins then add lentils and stock. Bring to the boil, then cover, lower heat and simmer for 30 to 35 mins. Puree till smooth.

These lentil loaves sound amazing. I'd also love to see a recipe.

I added some to a mousakka and it bulked it out and was really tasty. It was a healthier version from good food mag.

Bestseller · 03/02/2019 21:06

I add them to almost anything made in the slow cooker to avoid the wateriness you often get

TheProvincialLady · 03/02/2019 21:13

It’s fine to add salt when cooking red lentils, just not any other kind of lentil or bean.

glowingtwigs · 03/02/2019 21:25

Lentil soup, cook with with ham stock and onions then blend and add a squeeze of lemon and tons of black pepper. So good!

mumsastudent · 03/02/2019 21:33

my dh makes dhal with courgettes = comes out smooth creamy & subtly spicy - with plain boiled rice & sliced fresh toms, onion, cucumber & a dash (or 3!) of mint sauce on the side with aubergine pickle ( or lime or even tom sauce) possibly with fish fingers (we are multi cultural in all things!)

Suchasadmumma · 03/02/2019 21:34

Someone else mentioned Turkish lentil soup-can only assume similar to lentil soup we make. The only recipe I actually use red lentils for...my Nan used to make it...I call it summer soup, as it’s really light, and lemony.

  • soak lentils in water for at least 30 mins to shift starch
-make up a big pan of boiling water/chicken stock (at least 3 stock cubes)
  • add lentils
-soak white long grain rice in water once lentils are in the pan. About a quarter of rice to lentils
  • finely chop a couple of small onions. Fry in a good tblsp veg oil until they’re brown...almost charring. Add the onions and oil to the lentils
  • add juice of 1 lemon, a load of black pepper and some salt
  • simmer for about 30 - 40 mins. You can spoon off any yellow froth/scum from top.
  • add rice
  • bring back to boil, then simmer until rice is cooked

Serve with crusty bread. I add olives to the bowl (sounds weird, but tastes yum) add more lemon, salt and black pepper as required

It looks like vomit, I’m not going to lie. Smells amazing while cooking though. My husband didn’t try it for about 5 yrs due to its appearance, but once he did, he loved it. Fussy first born even eats it.

I just made red lentil and bean pate.
