Which plant 'milk'?

PurpleAndTurquoise · 03/02/2019 11:13

I want to switch from animal milk to plant 'milk' for ethical reasons.
It's really just for tea/coffee and cooking as no one in the family drinks it on its own.
Which is likely to be a good replacement taste wise? There are so many to choose from. DS has Coeliac Disease and can't have oats for another year (possibly never).
Thanks

How old is DS - the only ‘blue top’ style milk available to you is alpro growing up milk.

Impicciona · 03/02/2019 11:19

I use Alpro unsweetened unroasted almond milk. It's got a mild taste and is really nice in tea.

Hedgehogblues · 03/02/2019 11:22

I find oat milk the one that most mimics cows milk in taste and texture. Hazelnut milk is really nice in coffee.

Coconut milk..Smile

NannyR · 03/02/2019 20:48

I like alpro unsweetened soya from the chiller rather than the uht, it tastes fairly neutral and has similar protein to cows milk. I really like hazelnut milk and coconut milk but just as a tasty drink as they don't have much in them nutritionally.

mintbiscuit · 03/02/2019 20:52

Another vote for unsweetened almond milk here. Nice in tea. No plant milks taste good in coffee in my opinion!

Although haven’t tried hazelnut milk in coffee so might give that a try as PPs suggestion!

kikisparks · 03/02/2019 20:53

If you can’t have oat then unsweetened soya is probably best.

BettyJJ · 03/02/2019 20:54

Almond or oat are best.

Coconut and cashew are the worst.

GMtoBe · 03/02/2019 20:55

We have unsweetened soya in tea and DH likes oatly barista in his coffee but seeing as you can't use that his second favourite is coconut. I also quite like cashew milk.

fattymumslim19 · 03/02/2019 20:58

I use hazelnut milk, it's amazing in a latte.

BettyJJ · 03/02/2019 20:59

Can he have tiger milk or peanut milk? Try them.

Mmmhmmokdear · 03/02/2019 21:08

I like almond, tastes nice in tea and coffee to me. Cashew is nice in porridge; it makes it really creamy.

crunchie12 · 03/02/2019 21:17

Oatly. The Barista edition is lovely in coffee and doesn't curdle.

newtlover · 03/02/2019 21:19

oat milk- the only really environmentally acceptable plant 'milk'

Laquila · 03/02/2019 21:20

Hazelnut is great in hot chocolate. I was not impressed with almond or cashew.

Owlettele · 03/02/2019 21:20

Koko us best in hot drinks. Tastes v similar to cow's milk. And 'giraffe milk' fir your D's. Approximately growing up milk.

Owlettele · 03/02/2019 21:20

Alpro growing up milk......auto correct!

sackrifice · 03/02/2019 21:21

There are loads on the market. Pick one, try it and see. If not pick another one.

chocolatespiders · 03/02/2019 21:23

I like unsweeted soya and Koko. I would like to find something that's nice in porridge if anyone has any suggestions.

soulrider · 03/02/2019 21:23

Most oat milk in the UK is not suitable for coeliacs

Leatherandsilk · 03/02/2019 21:23

Ethical issues? Wouldn’t go with almond, the ethics don’t stack up Vs actual cows milk which can be perfectly ethical.

missmouse101 · 03/02/2019 21:24

The ingredients in them are hideous. Lots of oil, and chalk in some. I can't bear oil in my tea.

Lyricallie · 03/02/2019 21:25

I'm another unsweetened almond milk, use it in my coffee and even made a cheese sauce with it the other day (not going to lie I was surprised it worked).

We started buying it because we were throwing out milk as we weren't getting through it fast enough as we only use a dash for coffee in the morning. The almond milk lasts a lot longer as I hate food waste.

Unsweetened soya milk isn't bad either we've been using that recently as we've been trying to shop in lidl more and that's all they sell in that area.

BlooShampoo · 03/02/2019 21:26

Cashew milk is lovely - alpro one is best, I think
Or alpro growing up

Teddyreddy · 03/02/2019 21:30

Dd is allergic to dairy so we've tried most of the alternatives. The alpro cashew milk is the nicest I've found for tea, it's also good for coffee - it's the only alternative DH will tolerate. I've heard good things about rice milk too, but as it's not suitable for under 5s (arsenic levels) we don't buy it. If you are OK with soya (DD isn't) I think that is a good substitute as well. Hazelnut milk is foul in tea but lovely in coffee.

For cooking, the best I've found is unsweetened hemp milk as it doesn't add any extra flavour. Nut milks, coconut and oat milks all add a bit of an odd flavour to things like white sauce and custard - again I've not tried rice milk or soya.
