What things do you see and think are just pretentious?

For me it's cafés with "no WiFi here, talk to each other!" signs.

A) I'll probably go elsewhere thanks

B) My best friend likes to sit on his phone anyway because they don't realise mobile data exists.

I just find it so wanky - if I'm going out to spend money on a drink and several pieces of cake then I'm going out to relax. If I want to be on my phone then I will be.

School uniforms (private or state) are a ridiculous pretension that other countries manage very well without.

0ccamsRazor · 04/02/2019 11:02

Bullshit that mlm borge bots vomit out all over their social media such as, #livingthedream #blessed-to-have-to-remorgage-my-home-to-pay-for-this-crap-that-i-am-trying-to-flog-to-you-all and so on

Also in west London, a brutalist 1970s block of maisonettes, one of which belonged to someone with a craving for a country cottage, I guess. The windows of these flats were the standard huge single paned council fitting. This particular flat's windows had been taped to imitate leaded lights. The ceilings had imitation beams added. It was on upper floors so no further detail as I was gawping from street level. I wouldn't say it was pretentious though, it had a touch of despair about it. Unusual and unexpected it certainly was.

Moononthehill28 · 04/02/2019 11:18

Leftie Guardian readers spouting on about poverty when they talk disparagingly about the. council eatatedown the road and have no friends who are working class.

CemetaryGates · 04/02/2019 11:28

Gosh, lots of people hate 4x4s on here!

I would love one. The grit lorries don't come up the lanes near where I live, and I've really struggled with getting up the track to my house this last week. What is the term for somebody who wants something that others see as pretentious? 😂

HalfBloodPrincess · 04/02/2019 11:39

People who refer to it as ‘The Grauniad’

Still. Aren’t you so cultured and erudite! Come on, it’s a 20 year old joke. You’re not going to win any comedy awards!

poppym12 · 04/02/2019 11:42

Artisanal chocolate.

I can't bring myself to eat anything with 'anal' in the description, especially chocolate.

LadyKalila · 04/02/2019 11:52

""You're rocking it""

People who drive enormous Jeeps and Range Rovers when they live on small suburban streets in a flat area and never drive anywhere more rugged than Tesco. I debated this with my cousin recently as he is a prime offender. His response was 'Well how will people know how much money you have unless they can see it parked outside your house?' He actually said this - I feel sorry for the neighbours who have to manoeuvre around it parked up on the pavement and blocking half the road.

I completely understand the Peacock hate! There used to be loads of the bastards roaming my university campus and there's nothing quite like being woken by one screeching outside your window when you're hungover! They'd lurk in doorways and try to attack anyone who had the audacity to want to enter the building - 'Sorry I'm late, there was a peacock in the doorway' was an everyday excuse for getting to seminars late.

villageshop · 04/02/2019 12:10

@PJW16 There's nothing pretentious about the word 'bespoke'. It is a centuries-old word that simply means 'custom-made', ie an item specially made for the customer who ordered it.

So if I was of smaller height than average (which I am) or in a wheelchair I might have a 'bespoke kitchen' where the worktop height was designed and fitted to suit my needs.

What is pretentious about that?

mayathebeealldaylong · 04/02/2019 12:12

Decaffeinated Coffee! Don't trust anyone who drinks it Grin I want some energy with it!

villageshop · 04/02/2019 12:21

Agree about house names in streets where the houses are numbered. We lived in a house with a name for decades but it didn't have a number so that made sense.

We recently moved to a house with a number and a name but I can't bring myself to call it anything other than no. 10.

The Brambles, no. 10 just sounds so wrong. Come the better weather I'm going to take down the house name plaque and just have the number. A simple no. 10 will be much better.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 04/02/2019 12:32

Maya - Is that pretentious? I drink decaf tea & coffee because I like the taste of both drinks but the caffeine in them is a severe migraine trigger for me (I have been under a neurologist for complex migraine for all of my adult life, it isn’t fun).

mayathebeealldaylong · 04/02/2019 12:36

@DonDrapersOldFashioned are you messing with me?... Wink

Sb74 · 04/02/2019 12:49

How about “we’ve just had our son’s room hdmi’d”?? This is the kind of pretentious crap we hear from mums our way.

MariaNovella · 04/02/2019 13:04

There is nothing pretentious about the word bespoke when it is actually applied to something made to measure or custom made. The trouble is these days is that it gets bandied about and applied to things that are barely customised.

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 04/02/2019 13:27

MariaNovella
My glasses are bespoke, but I don't tell people they are. You and DH are the only ones who know. Blush

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 04/02/2019 13:28

And, all of MN! Blush

MariaNovella, is your username based on Santa Maria Novella fragrance? I love it either way! Smile

1forAll74 · 04/02/2019 13:37

I don't like doubled barreled surnames either. When I first came into the village here ,fourteen years ago, I don't remember any, but over the years, there has been an influx of new people coming here, mainly city,or townie people, and now there is quite a selection of naffy names here.

caperplips · 04/02/2019 13:38

Me too MissLanes such a beautiful perfume!

rosie39forever · 04/02/2019 13:42

Ordered a coffee in small independent cafe, received a beaker of hot water, a test tube of coffee and a mini milk bottle of milk on a board, paid £5 to make my own coffee ffs.

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 04/02/2019 13:44

caperplips, yes! I think I have tried only one of hers. I had a sample. I collect fragrance, so I would love to have one of hers in my collection. However, there are so many to choose from! It is very hard! LOL! Grin

PCohle · 04/02/2019 13:47

I also think bespoke is pretentious.

"My beautiful bespoke kitchen" = my kitchen isn't from ikea because I'm super middle class don't you know.

It's just a word that always comes across as boastful.
