How much do you drink? Honestly

Hi,

I'm sure this has been done to death, but I guess I was just feeling a bit nosey.

So we've just had dry January and there are more teetotalers in this country now than ever before, but we're still very much a drinking nation, aren't we?

So quite simply, how much do you drink(if anything)? And if you do drink, what kind of drinker are you? I.e, do you only drink at the weekend? Are you mostly dry, but when you drink, you binge? Or do you drink throughout the week? Are you happy with your drinking? Do you worry about it?

I suppose I should go first Blush

This week I've had just one dry day (ooops- stressed, but only a small glass in the evening) but usually I'm dry in the week, but will drink Friday until Sunday. Not constantly Grin but I'd say a couple of bottles of wine in that time, if I'm being completely honest, which I know is slightly over the RWA.

I definitely over indulged over Christmas and I always do when I'm on holiday. That said, I never drink to get drunk, although I do enjoy that slightly tipsy, merry feeling.

Ok, over to you....

1 x 70cl bottle of vodka + 1 x 2ltr bottle of white wine (12%) + 6 x 50cl cans of lager (4.5%) used to last me 7 days but now I'm trying to stretch it out to 10-11 days.
I had 3 dry days a few weeks back. Those were the first for 3 years.
I used to drink a lot more! I'd love to stop because, aside from anything else, it costs a fortune but, I like it and it's my only treat.

WhoKnewBeefStew · 01/02/2019 14:09

I drink too much

I may have 1/2 double vodka and tonic, 2/3 evenings a week and maybe 1/2 on a weekend with a bottle of wine

BigusBumus · 01/02/2019 14:10

I drink way too much. A bottle a night probably, sometimes less sometimes more. Never really feel "pissed" with it, either, just a bit more relaxed.

I give up, start again, do Sober October (successfully and raised a ton of money), limit myself, blah blah, but my default setting is as a drinker.

I think all the time about life without it, and I am pretty much in a place now to give it up entirely. Same with DH who is a drinker also. We are both a bit fat now, and don't want to be so we both talk about stopping drinking. I'm sure pretty soon we will stop completely.

Nothing. Unfortunately opening a bottle is like letting the genie out of the lamp in my case Grin before I realised I couldn't moderate it was a bottle of wine every day.
I don't miss it at all. I don't envy the two glasses per week people either. I mean what is the point in that ? Wink

winsinbin · 01/02/2019 14:12

In the last 6 months I’ve gone from at least a bottle of wine a night to 3/4 dry days a week and I’ve noticed that on the nights I do drink I drink less now as I drink slower. But it’s probably still 5/6 units a night when I do drink which is officially binging but feels abstemious to me.

I am fine now to not drink on nights at home, I dislike the thought of it during the day as there isn’t the ‘treat’ of a nice glass of wine and G&T to look forward to but once I’m past the 6pm or so hump I don’t even think about drinking. What I haven’t managed yet is doing a social night out without a drink. I honestly don’t know how people do that.

I was hoping that cutting back the way I have would mean I lost a bit of weight but I seem to have substituted chocolate for wine so that hasn’t happened. I was also hoping for improved sleep but that hasn’t happened either.

Oddsocksandmeatballs · 01/02/2019 14:12

1-2 Gin and tonics on a Friday and Saturday night (single pub measures), nothing Sunday to Thursday.

lubeybooby · 01/02/2019 14:14

I don't miss it. Used to think I would but I actually prefer being without now. It's been a fairly slow gentle process for me too, over a few years starting with realising the calories were not worth it and phasing it out without particularly trying.

InteriorLulu · 01/02/2019 14:19

I used to drink a lot - 40+ units a week but stopped in September last year for a couple of months. I now barely scrape 10 units and have 5 or 6 dry days per week. (Except for Christmas where there was a lot of socialising).

When I stopped it seemed like I'd reached some limit - like I'd drunk enough, if that makes any sense. I don't miss it nearly as much as I thought I would.

BigusBumus · 01/02/2019 14:25

winsinbin When I did Sober October the improved sleep only happened after about 9 days of no alcohol. The first 2 or 3 nights were horrendous, but after 9 days it was so blissful that we were going to bed early, not to escape alcohol cravings but to get more gorgeous sleep! Seriously couldn't wake up in the mornings and sleeping all the way through without getting up at 2am for a wee and pint of water!

Bowlofbabelfish · 01/02/2019 14:32

Have a drink 2-3x a year.

I have small kids, don’t socialise much and just cba with feeling tired or hungover when I’m so tired and have so little free time.

I noticed a definite split in my group of acquaintances in my late thirties between people who either started drinking either very little or carried on really caning it.

I did used to like a glass of wine at the weekend before I had kids. I don’t miss it (I do miss sleep!) and I’m not sure I’d want to drink more once the kids are older either.

Each to their own.

Blackglitter · 01/02/2019 14:35

I usually drink a bottle of vodka every weekend. Usually 4 or 5 drinks from Friday to Sunday (sometimes Thursday) and sometimes wine with dinner. I used to drink during the week but I cut that down because of too many days of drinking. I look at drinking as a reward for the end of the week and gives me something to look forward to.

Auntiepatricia · 01/02/2019 14:36

I’d say on average about 2 units a week. Some weeks none, rare occasion I have a good 4-5 drinks.

Binpedal · 01/02/2019 14:36

I drink Fri to Sun - two to two and a half bottles of wine + a few beers.
Too much I know

slimthinpin · 01/02/2019 14:37

Oh... I've just cut down from maybe a couple of bottles of wine a week (more if going out) to a couple of glasses a week! I feel very proud of myself. The Allen Carr stopping booze book really helped.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 01/02/2019 14:37

Next to nothing. Empty calories. I'd rather be eating Grin

Aquilla · 01/02/2019 14:39

Nothing Mon-Fri, generally. Saturday night half bottle fizz. Sunday night, remains of the fizz and a beer.

That's if there's nothing happening.

Lovelyflowerstoday · 01/02/2019 14:40

Hardly ever, like the initial feeling of a few sips then become totally disinterested as it makes me so sleepy. Can't imagine drinking a bottle of vodka over a weekend, I'd been in hospital!

Flightywoman · 01/02/2019 14:42

I don't have any kind of pattern or regular habit really. If I fancy a drink I'll have one, very often I don't fancy it or I can't be bothered.

On holiday I'll push the boat out, but at home less so. We always have booze in but I don't drink every day or every week. It can be weeks between drinks or it could be consecutive days.

We take it in turns to drive so I don't drink when it's my go and that's fine.

I love booze but I don't feel the need to have it all the time.

Dillyson · 01/02/2019 14:45

A bottle of wine and a home measure gin and tonic a week. At least 3 alcohol free days a week, sometimes more.

caperplips · 01/02/2019 14:51

I decided to give alcohol a break after Christmas as I was a bit sick of it and I am trying to lose weight.

We had friends over the second weekend of Jan and I had a glass of prosecco and about half a bottle of red wine over the course of the evening.

One small glass of white wine last week when I met a friend for lunch and that's it all month and I haven't missed it tbh!

Think I will stay more or less off it for Feb too, I have 1 or 2 social engagements where I will probably have a glass or two but that's all.

PinkHeart5914 · 01/02/2019 15:17

Me & dh always have 1 small glass with our evening meal, just like our parents always have.

Sunday to Thursday it is just that 1 small glass but Friday & Saturday night we have 2-3 glasses

Bumblebee39 · 01/02/2019 15:19

Mostly I'm teetotal

Occasionally I throw caution to the wind but there's no rhyme or reason to it really

Before kids I was a classic binge drinker

TheNoodlesIncident · 01/02/2019 15:26

A share in a bottle of champagne on New Year's Eve

I think that was it for last year. Not bothered about alcohol, never really think about it ordinarily. If I go out I prefer tea, or have a mineral water.

I did drink now and again when I was young, but I just can't be arsed now. And I don't feel like I have to drink to "fit in", which I did in my yoof.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/02/2019 15:30

Nil
By choice.
I do use Amarretto in Christmas cake and marzipan , but I didn't make one last Christmas so not even my annual dose !

Too much coffee though Blush

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 01/02/2019 15:32

I haven't drunk since I guess last summer. I don't really like the taste of alcohol and even one glass gives me a pounding headache the next day! I wasn't always like this!
